Bakersfield, California - (March 29-30, 2008) Driver Tyler McQuarrie in the CWest S2000 dominated the competition this weekend to take home 1st place in the RWD Unlimited Class and the title of Overall Grand Champion, in the 2008 REDLINE Time Attack event at Button Willow Raceway Park. His winning time was an astonishing 1:48.829 on configuration, lucky number 13.
Conditions seemed promising on Saturday with temperatures in the mid 70s, low 80s as drivers from all across Southern California took to the tarmac to perfect their race lines and fine tune their vehicles. Saturday was also a amazing opportunity for spectators and Time Attack fans alike to do some laps in an adrenaline charged, high speed ride-along with some of the series' top drivers. "I went in with a white shirt, and came out brown" said Time Attack fanatic, Greg Wiist after spinning at nearly 90mph off the track into the dirt field on his ride-along in a top-less Mazda Miata.
Sunday definitely proved to be a test of skill, as drivers battled cold track conditions and harsh desert winds for much of the morning practice session. Only those able to adapt were left standing. After drivers had a few hours to warm up, the official REDLINE Time Attack session began. Each of the 9 divisions were sent out in groups of 5-9 cars and given one warm-up lap, then three hot laps to run the fastest time possible.

Turboing the Toyota FT-86
Since we know that the FT-86 is the normally aspirated version of the Subaru Impreza WRX motor, we know it is possible to be turboed. We just don’t know where we might have to put the turbo in the engine bay. Speculation has come up on many Toyota FT-86 forums about how easy it will be to turbo this car. Well the new Legacy GT might have just solved that problem for future Toyota FT-86 owners.
The legacy GT uses an equal length exhaust manifold with the turbo mounted under neath the engine. This is different than the standard Subaru Impreza WRX/STI as they (at least in the US) use an unequal length exhaust manifold that has an uppipe putting the turbo next to the intercooler in the engine bay. This is not the most optimal setup as it generates additional engine bay heat and requires more piping to the turbo. Using the Legacy GT exhaust manifold will save room in the engine bay and will most likely be more efficient by placing the turbo closer to the hotter exhaust gasses.
The downside to this could be for people looking to make big power. It is unsure how big of a turbo can be placed under the engine before clearance becomes an issue. Though with the estimated weight of the FT-86 being under 3000 pounds, a stock Impreza turbo might be enough to satisfy the average tuner. The other possible downside is that you will most likely loose the distinctive Boxer Motor rumble that is the signature sound of the WRX. Although maybe having a Toytoa emblem might make not having the Boxer rumble an issue.
The other issues to contend with are the stock engine compression and the ECU. The compression issue may result in lower levels of boost, but can be overcome by using WRX or aftermarket WRX internals. An easy fix, but costly as well. In regards to the ECU, if it is Subaru based, it may give a head start to companies like Cobb Tuning who may be able to alter their AccessPort product to work with the FT-86 allowing for the computer to be optimized for a turbo application. If it is a new ECU though, it may be a while in development before Engine Tuning is possible, but with the expected popularity of this car, we will eventually see many options for ECU tuning and will most likely have complete turbo solutions available as well.

Subaru Legacy GT-B Vs Subaru Forester GT vs Legacy B4?
I currently own a '94 Legacy GT (Twin Turbo) and am looking to upgrade to another Subaru. I have also owned a '95 WRX STi in the past so I'm a Suby boi at heart hence why i wanna stick with 'em! =)
I'm contemplating on getting either a Subaru Legacy GT-B or Legacy B4 which are basically the same exept B4 is Sedan version, or the Subaru Forester GT or T/Tb (both Turbo versions).
Out of the above (GT-B - B4 - Forester) Which ones would you guys recommend and why? Thanks! =)
NOTE: I am living in New Zealand so cars may differ in names and engine variations in other country's? All car's mentioned (In NZ) come out with the 2.0L Turbocharged EJ20 Boxer engines.
kiora,
if you want a constant boost on demand then get a forester, as these have single turbo and way faster then the twin turbos.
but if you want luxury and hook up chicks then a b4 will be good. these have lower boost compared to foresters and secondary turbo doesn't kick in untill you reach 5000 rpm.
and if you have a family and do heaps of shopping and travelling around than get a gt-b. the power output is the same as the b4
cheers
2011 Forester First Of Many Subarus To Get Higher-MPG Engine
Subaru will, over the next year, begin introducing a new line of four-cylinder engines that will be ten percent more fuel-efficient than the ones they replace. The 2011 Forester first gets the all-new mill, with the Impreza, Legacy, and Outback to follow, perhaps for 2012. Although Subaru's current 'boxer' four has been updated nearly every year...
