I made a lot of mistakes building 351W-powered Mazda RX7. One of the biggest is relying on the wrong people for advice. I once believed that we should support the locals whenever possible, but they let me down too much. Now I recommend finding out from the experts online or wherever you can find them.

One of my early problems was cooling the engine. RX7s don't have a lot of front surface area to work with. So I experimented with oil cooling. I tried quite a few innovations but always failed.

One product I tried was a Perma-Cool engine oil cooler kit. It included a sandwich fitting to place under the OEM filter to route the oil to hoses. I substituted it with Perma-Cool's fitting to replace the OEM filter with a remote filter because there is not enough room for a filter and the sandwich adapter with the RX7 cross member in the way. I also used their filter block for a remote filter.

The Perma-Cool kit came with some very nice hoses that permanently adhere to the fittings after they are installed. It worked great and never leaked. The problem was that it was only good one time. I couldn't remove it and reuse it when I had problems with the hardware.

Here is what kept going wrong:

Cast aluminum is weak. The oil filter block and the oil routing fitting used brass barbs with pipe thread to connect the hoses. Since oil is hot, the hardware also gets hot and, guess what, aluminum expands at a different rate than brass does. So it always leaked. I tried to stop the leaks being the person I am who hates leaky cars, and the aluminum fittings kept cracking. I tried several replacements, which the dealer gave me honoring the warrantee, but it never worked. It makes me wonder who does ever get them to work, and how Perma-cool stays in business with this stuff.

Oil does not stay inside a hose. I tried using normal oil hose (transmission cooler hose) which I got from the speed shop, who told me it would be fine. The fact is, the hoses always eventually come off, and it's always a big mess.

Failed remedies:

Plumbing:

With all of the oil hose failures, I decided to try metal pipes. I already had a pipe bender from when I made the sway bars (I will tell you about that later, it's a good story). The thing about plumbing is that it isn't meant for oil. It's meant for water, which is actually more of an adhesive than a lubricant. Water tends to make pipe connections better. Oil doesn't. Oil lubricates the threads, it dissolves the pipe tape, and it leaks.

Home made filter block:

I got a one inch thick block of aluminum from Metal Supermarket and drilled holes to route the oil through the filter. I used a pipe tap to thread the holes for the barbs, and I used an end mill to cut groves in the surface of the block for flow to the filter. I also used the pipe tap to thread the hole for the nipple that the filter screws on. I got the nipple from the failed Perma-cool block. It turned out great, and it worked for a while. It failed when the nipple pulled out of the aluminum block and dropped the filter on the highway. Oil was everywhere, and I was stranded. I was on my way to the county land fill to see how much the car weighs. My daughter was with me, but a nice farmer came by and took us home.

What I didn't know was that oil filter threads are close but not the same as pipe threads.

I gave the hell up and put a Mobil 1 filter in the OEM position. I haven't had an oil problem since. Later, I figured out how to cool the engine, but that is a different article. I am not a genius, but I am a pretty good mechanic. I trust people who should be experts, and I get burned most of the time.

Here is what I needed to know:

Jegs is a catalog full of everything I needed and asked for. Jegs offers oil coolers that work, braided oil hoses that don't leak and threaded hose fittings that stay tight. They cost money, but they exist. I think everyone thought I was trying to be cheap, and that's why I kept getting useless parts. I have given up on the oil cooler idea. The Mobil 1 filter is working great, and it even increases the oil pressure.

Here is the punch line, the reason for this article, and the lesson for us all:

Synthetic oil saved my ass. All these oil system failures caused me to run my hopped-up 351 Windsor without oil several time sometimes at highway speeds. Thanks to Mobil 1 synthetic, I have no known damage. The engine has never had a problem.

Question about Windsor and Cleveland Engines?

I can't remember which was more known to burn oil. I know that they are gasoline engines but one was more known to have an oil burning problem.

Which was it?

The cleveland was the one that burned oil. Problem was, the rear main seals weren't getting enough oil, so they would crack and burn up.... then you get bigger problems. Windsor is the better choice of the two, unless you've got the money to spend and modify the lifter bores.....
