Ask any professional powder coating technician as to what the most important factor is in creating a flawless job, and he will without a doubt tell you that preparing the piece to powder coat is by far the most difficult. Unfortunately, this is the tendon that gets torn for most new users and practitioners of powder coating, and their struggle of learning how to powder coat. With a little bit of background knowledge, the right powder coat supplies and equipment, you can be turning out beautiful rims, valve covers or even lawn furniture with some amazing powder coat colors available.
Below are several of the processes and treatments items should go through before you begin powder coating. Failing to properly prep the piece, can and will lead to some very bad powder coating jobs which you will undeniably regret after having to to strip this strong, durable coating off of the piece. As you learn more, and find different powder coat supplies, you may change your prep sequence slightly, but for the most part, these are the main three.
First and foremost, the most important step with electrostatic powder coating is the use and application of proper de-greasing. Nothing will ruin a powder coat paint finish faster then having grime or dirt in between the layer of powder and the part that you're working on. So step 1 in the powder coating process will never change. If there are heavy deposits on the part you're working with, begin with simple water and a rag. Get as much of it off as you can, and if that looks sufficient you can move onto step 2, but if there is lots of grime built up on it, a heavy duty industrial de-greaser may be required. Many people swear by these, but I try and avoid them in my list of powder coating supplies as many will leave a film on your piece that can cause even more problems down the road, but regardless, if the piece isn't coming clean without the use of this, then by all means use it before you begin powder coating.
Step 2 is media blasting the part. This is basically like sanding the entire piece before the powder coat finish is applied. Silica sand has been used for years, and still very predominant over seas, but many people in the US are opting against it for fear of silicosis. Silicosis is a result from using silica based sand without a proper dust retrieval system or respirator. It builds up in your lungs and can cause you to expire far before the powder coating finish you applied does. Other options for the silica sand is glass bead, walnut shells, and various other course medias that can be used prior to powder coating. Research the different alternatives, and find what works best with your powder coating equipment.
Step 3 is considered a baking process, and commonly referred to as out-gassing. Metals can trap gasses in their pours, and can be released when raised to high temperatures. Pre-heating your piece having the powder coating applied to it before hand will reduce the chances of flaws once you finish the powder coating process. Afterwards let the piece cool down to about 120 degrees before applying the powder coat to it. If you must handle the piece at all during this time, be sure to wear latex gloves with no solvents on them or anything as you will contaminate the piece you're working with and possibly ruin the powder coat finish.
Taking the time to properly prepare the piece for powder coating will give you thousands of professional looking jobs without hassle. Just as a carpenter would say... measure twice, cut once... you should always prepare the part twice figuratively speaking before you would apply the powder coating to minimize your chances at a botched job.

grinding of various materials as varied as Minerals to Pigments.
The Ball Mills are versatile grinding equipments and are used by Pigments, Paints, Minerals industries.
Techno Designs has specialized in manufacturing of Continuous Ball Mills for various applications.
The unique feature of the mill is its assembly. The shaft run outs for mills of 20000 Ltrs capacity is less than 200 microns. The support
bases are from fabricated plate sections and the top plate where the bearings rest are planed to give a perfect seating.
Continuous Mills are offeredin1)EndPeripheralDischargetype2)TrunionDischargetypeand3)AirSwepttype.
Jacketed mills are offered for cooling as well as for heating applications also.
TECHNO DESIGNS HAS ALREADY MANUFACTURED MILLS WITH GROSS VOLUMETRIC CAPACITY OF 25000 LTRS WITH DRIVE MOTOR OF 425 H.P.
TECHNO Bead Mills are capable of producing finely dispersed finished product from directly charged raw materials.
Three operations of premixing, grinding and dispersing are combined within one machine. The machine operates on the principle of shear created within the mass differential of product and grinding media. The grinding medium is moved to the vessel wall by the action of the specially designed disc impeller. This constantly moving mass of grinding media is force-flowed up the side of the vertical vessel wall, the action continuing until the vortex spiral directs the media movement towards the agitator shaft for another continuous cycle of events.
The main grinding shell is jacketed for cooling. This is a very speedy operation wherein major products are achieved to the respective gauges in about 1-1/2 hours time.
The applications are Synthetic enamels, Water based primers, Red oxide primers, Artist colours, Flexography inks, Industrial finishes.
Techno Designs offers Horizontal as well as Vertical Sand Mills for wet grinding of various kinds of materials such as Pigments, Agrochemicals, Dyes, Paints, Minerals and various other type chemicals etc. This is primarily used for size reduction of the materials. This Bead Mills are used for continuous dispersion and fine wet grinding for high to low viscosity pumpable fluids.
PRINCIPLE
The necessary energy for grinding is given by rotating the beads by means of discs fixed on the agitator. The grinding beads transfers the energy to the material and high shear and high peripheral velocities reduces the particle size of the material to be ground.
CONTINUOUS
It consists of a Horizontal/Vertical Cylindrical jacketed shell with a central shaft on which number of discs is fixed. The shell is provided with cooling jacket. The shaft end is sealed by double mechanical seal The feed pump and the electric panel is mounted on the main machine with all necessary required instrumentation and controls. The grinding beads are separated from the material by means of gap separator or by Wedge Screen.
Techno Designs offers RVD for clean, simple and effective way of drying of wet cakes, wet powders, slurries where either solvent is to be recovered or drying is to be carried out at relatively low temperature for heat sensitive material.
CONSTRUCTION
It contains a hollow shaft with specially designed hollow arms, which are heated by steam / hot water/ thermic fluid; rotating in a centrally jacketed shell. The entire shell area is effectively covered by the specially designed scrapper arms, which scrape the entire internal surface of the dryer and continuously move and rotate the material remaining in contact with hot surfaces for protracted periods of time. This reduces the drying time.
OPERATION
After starting agitation, feed is charged and vacuum is applied in RVD, dust catcher, condenser and receiver. Then heating the mass causes vapor to evaporate, which is subsequently condensed and collected in receiver. The recovery of solvent is maximum and drying time is low because of higher heat transfer, vacuum and intensive mixing.
SALIENT FEATURES
As each material is unique in nature, Techno Designs offers pilot trial for understanding drying behaviour and predicting data on power and heat input along with drying time. Optional features like breaker bar (for minimizing lump formation for particle size reduction), nitrogen purging (for explosion proof environment), stationary scrapper blades ( for scrapping rotating agitator for highly sticky material), sampling valve (for collecting samples during vacuum application), flame proof motors (for Ex-proof environment)

2 Tone Powder Coating?
A friend and i are thinking about powder coating some engine parts and our rims. we are about to buy all of the supplies including the sandblaster, hot coat powder coating gun, powder and anything else we need. but my question is when we start to do our valve covers on our cars we want to do a 2 tone job. for example we would want the valve cover to be white and the the nissan logo and name to be red. how would we go about doing that? or another example if i wanted my rims to be mirror black but i wanted the lips of the rims to be chrome.
A few things to consider from the coatings performance point of view:
-The valve covers get hot and are exposed to petroleum distillates. Be very sure you get the right powder product and prepare the surfaces correctly or, your paint job will last less than a few hours. Even so, White colors yellow terribly with heat. Expect to be disapointed.
-wheels. This is my specialty. I am inthis industry supplying coatings to OEM and aftermarket wheel guys. Wheel painting is a tedious process. I assume your rims are aluminum. Painting aluminum requires a multistep pretreatment process to get good adhesion. Then a good powder coating for corrosion and durability. Then painting and a good clear coat. The paint is usually baked 30 minutes at 150 Celsius to get good cure and performance. Any air dry coating you might consider will last all of a few months. Chroming and painting are different processes and do not blend well. I applaud you for being creative, but your plan is a tough one to achieve with any long term durability. Good luck. Hope it looks great.
