For cleaning retention ponds of light oil sheen and keeping the EPA off your back, there is nothing easier than using a tube oil skimmer.
Tube oil skimmers are very simple devices that consist of a machine with a motor, a collection tank, and a tube that collects the oil.
Like all skimmers, the tube oil skimmer only collects oil or other petroleum based products that are floating on the water. They work because petroleum based liquids stick to virtually anything they come into contact with.
Here's how the tube skimmer works:
A loop made of polyurethane tubing floats on top of the water and the oil sticks to it. The loop of tubing is routed through the skimmer on top of 2 wheels.
The rear wheel is powered by the motor and grips the tubing moving it to the front of the machine over the other wheel. Between the 2 wheels is a scraper that removes the oil and dumps it into a holding container.
The front wheel is not powered and just keeps the tubing on track as it moves back out of the machine to the surface of the water.
As you can see its a very simple device that performs a needed task.
There are several things that you need to know when you get ready to buy one.
First of all, you'll need to know how long the tubing needs to be. In order to determine the length of the tubing, you need to know approximately where you will mount the oil skimmer and how high the top of the machine will be above the water's surface.
It's better to have tubing that is too long than tubing that is too short.
If you tell the vendor you're buying the tubing oil skimmer from how high above the water your proposed location is and how big of an area you are trying to collect oil from, they will be able to size the tubing for you.
The factory will cut the tubing to your specified length and then fuse it together to create the endless loop that is needed.
I remember that it took our maintenance guys a little time to get the tube oil skimmer set up correctly before it was working like it should. The biggest thing to look out for is not putting a twist on the tubing or it won't track properly through the skimmer.
The tubing should lie flat on the ground with no twists or humps before it is installed in the oil skimmer body.
The best way to mount the oil skimmer body is to form and pour a small concrete pad and anchor bolt the skimmer to it or if you are using the skimmer in a tank or a place where you can't pour concrete, have some structural steel built to support it.
Once set up, the tube oil skimmer will do a fantastic job of removing petroleum based liquids from the surface of waste water with little or no maintenance or attention needed from you.

Saltwater Trolling Motors
For decades, fisherman have depended on electric trolling motors for their freshwater fishing and boating needs. Electric trolling motors of today are very quiet that makes our fishing at its best whenever we are on small lakes or creeks because it does not scare the fishes away. This motor is also good when trying to maneuvering through small places or shallow water areas. The only disadvantage about the original electric motors is that they weren't much good in saltwater because it would cause corrosion. Switches, shafts, housing and mounts were all vulnerable to this. It was only a matter of time before someone would come up with an idea to prevent this from happening.
Then came the Salt Water Trolling Motors. These actually came about saltwater fishing when guides began using them to pursue giant tarpon in the salt-waters of Homosassa, Florida. Since the head of the electric trolling motor would start to corrode as soon as it hit the saltwater, they started to use urethane potting, which means they would completely seal the outside of the motor with a half inch coating of water resistant material.
Preparing the electric trolling motor for saltwater use was a tough job during the earlier days. Every metal part and electric connection of the trolling motor must be covered with silicone sealant making you to almost completely disassemble the trolling motor. This would work for a year or two, depending on how often you used it.
But today, you don't have to worry about doing all the hard work just to seal your motor for salt water use. Manufacturers had finally seen the need and demand of saltwater trolling motors and engineered their own models that will withstand saltwater use right out of the box.
So how do you know which motor is best for you? Trolling motors or electric motors use battery power to propel the boat. You will need to figure out how much power you will need to move through the water efficiently. A few things you need to consider is how heavy your boat is, What the length is, How much gear you carry, whether you fish with more than one person and whether you fish in rough waters or not. There are charts to help you determine which model and thrust rating is best for you. Electric trolling motors come in 3 different power systems, 12, 24 and 36 volt. The 12 volt is the most inexpensive but could lack the thrust power that you may need.
