When car racing enthusiasts discuss about the most challenging turns in a race track in the world, they will often mention "The Corscrew" or Turn 8 and 8A of Monterey Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. The turn, which has challenged even the most experienced race car drivers, is quite difficult to navigate due to the apex on the approach at uphill and blind crests which leads to drop in elevation.
The 2.238 mi (3.602 km) Monterey Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca has 11 turns on its paved road. However, it is not only the "The Corkscrew" that is popular in the turns of Monterey Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. Race car drivers also find the "Andretti Hairpin", which is Turn 2, very challenging with its technical but very difficult double apex. Turn 2 was named after famous Formula 1 World Champion Mario Andretti.
Another notable turn which earned a name of its own is Turn 9 which is now known as the "Rainey Curve" after Wayne Rainey former Grand Prix motorcycle racing World Champion. Helio Castroneves set the official lap record time of 1'07.722 in the qualifiers for the CART Honda Grand Prix 2000.
The Monterey Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca was built in 1956 with a cost of approximately $1.5 million. It was built after business leaders of the area realized the need for such race track at that time since the races at Pebble Beach Road, which were held through the winding roads of Del Monte Forest, were growing larger in terms of crowd and racing participants.
Instead of letting the races go somewhere else, civic minded individuals formed on November 1, 1956 the Sports Car Racing Association of the Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP) as a non-profit charitable organization aimed at enhancing the business climate of Monterey, California through motor sports.
True to its vision, Monterey Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca has earnings that exceeded more than a billion dollars in business revenues since its inception and at the same time providing local charities over $10 million. SRAMP continues to operate the raceway to date providing professionals on-site to manage every day operations as well as the promotion and management of major events.
With drivers from all over the country participating in different events the whole year and crowds growing as time goes by, allied business services such as hotels, restaurants and diners also flourished.
Visitors and participants alike can enjoy the permanent camping facilities of the Laguna Seca Recreation Area where the race track is also located. Or perhaps they can enjoy the comfort of Monterey Hotels and Carmel Hotels nearby. There are also numerous Monterey Hotels that are quite accessible from the Monterey Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca.
There are several events that are held annually at Monterey Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. These include the American Le Mans Series, Moto GP, AMA Superbike, and the Sports Car Series.
The Monterey Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca can also be rented if it is not hosting major events. The Sports Car Club of America holds two club races in it annually for the Bay Area Region. Also, different car clubs rent the raceway to enable their members to drive their own cars at speed. Nascar Tickets - the Rise of the Stock Car Evolution
The National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) will be completing 60 years this December, when the first meeting was organized all those years ago by Bill France Sr., to discuss problems faced by stock car racing. From that first humble meeting, NASCAR has become one of the most popular spectator sports in the world. No one present in that meeting could ever have dreamed that NASCAR would turn out to become what it is today!
The Stock Car Evolution
The first race under the aegis of NASCAR was held on February 15, 1948 at Daytona Beach. This was the post WWII era. Obviously, there was a shortage of new cars. Most people were driving pre-war models, which were in a rattletrap condition, to say the least. The cars were ‘modified,’ which consisted of merely tweaking and tuning the engine.
Ropes sufficed as seat belts, and the more colorful drivers used aircraft harnesses. Roll bars, which have been mandated since 1952, were not in use during those early years.
The ‘stock car’ designation was strictly enforced and brought cars from diverse manufacturers, such as Buick, Cadillac, Chrysler, Ford, Hudson, Kaiser, Lincoln, Mercury and Oldsmobile. One of the greatest problems was the failure of the wheels and the suspensions, as the racing surfaces were rough, dirt tracks.
As stock car racing gained popularity, there was fierce competition, and this made modifications necessary. Many modifications were brought in, in the interest of safety, and many special ‘high performance’ parts found there way into the mainstream models. This enabled these ‘special’ parts to be used in NASCAR racing. The first special production was that of ‘racing tires,’ which in 1952, were manufactured and distributed by Pure Oil Company.
This made quite a change from the normal ‘street’ tires. Development in tires continued, with both Firestone, and Goodyear – to some degree – took keen interest. Such developments were necessitated by increase in car speeds.
In 1952, two-way radios were used for the first time in a NASCAR race, and today it is a vital piece of equipment. Faced with a spate of hubs, axles, and suspension failures, the Oldsmobile, Lincoln and Hudson car companies introduced usage kits, in 1953.
In those early times, racing drivers did not stick to one particular model, or even make. They fairly jumped from one model, or make, to another, depending on what car or model they thought was suitable for their needs.
Today, the cars and the tracks used in NASCAR racing are a far cry from what they were all those five and six decades ago, when there were ‘true’ stock cars, racing on rough and dirt tracks.

5w20 or 10w20 or 5w30 or 10w30 motor oil? regular or synthetic? K&N or Ford Racing or Motorcraft Oil filter?
I have a 2002 Ford mustang GT 4.6L V8 2V SOHC 5 Speed Manual 60,000 Miles. Daily driver and weekend warrior. The owners manual say to use 5w20. I live in Houston TX. The car have the following MODS BBK Cool air intake Trick Flow 70mm throttle body Trick Flow upper plenum BBK under drive pulley kit BBK Long tubes Headers BBK off road X pipe Flow master American thunder cat back sistem Spec stage 1 clutch and pressure plate kit 3.73 Ford Racing rear end SCT programmer Chip and it is Dyno tune 93 Octane.Currently I am running Royal purple Full synthetic on the rear end , transmission , 5w20 on motor and regular Motorcraft Oil filter.Should I change to 10w20 or 5w30 or 10w30? What about the filter? Does it mater what kind of filter I use?
10w-30 synthetic royal purple or mobil 1 and a fram filter.
