Running Boards and Truck Steps: Helping People of All Heights Enjoy Big Trucks
Ever wonder how the idea for the big rig came into being? More likely than not, it had something to do with the horse. Horses provided a height advantage to those early pioneers of the plain, allowing the rider to sit tall in the saddle and survey the surrounding landscape. Now, imagine a cowboy jumping up into the saddle. Laughable, isn't it? That's why a saddle has stirrups.
Motoring is one of the many joys in life… or at least it should be. But, when you and your passengers have to haul yourselves in and out of a raised rig, your joy can be seriously diminished. Plus, you risk the possibility of injury when adding slippery pavement or uneven ground into the mix. Luckily, convenience and safety are literally only one simple step away.
Side steps, also known as step bars or truck steps, are made of durable aluminum or stainless steel and feature treaded pads to provide a non-slip surface for stepping in and out of your cab. Truck running boards and step bars provide an additional benefit: protection for your bodyline. will an 89 302 bolt up using same motor mounts as a 351m/400? what about tranny wise? truck is a 78 f250 4x4?
Actually, you CAN bolt it up, though you will have to move the motor mounts. The frame already has the holes drilled in it for the 302. The only thing keeping you from installing it is the fact that you're going from a big block set up to a small block set up, and there's like 5.8" difference int he offest for the mounts. But the holes are pre-drilled at the factory in the crossover for multiple engine configurations. You will probably bave to move your trans corssmember forward anywhere from 1 1/12 to 3 inches, and that'll require drilling new bolt holes in the frame for the crossmember. But they only have to be 1/2" holes and ANY 3'8" drill motor can handle that. The trans will bolt up, I believe, but the torque converter won't. There is also the question of what did your engine come out of. You may need to change from a center sump pan to a front sump pan. You didn't say what your engine came from, but you'll need to make sure your oil pan has a front sump because the mid sump pans will interfere with the crossmember, and the 351/400M pan won't interchange on the wondsor block engines.
