The Honda Prelude is a sports coupe that was offered for sale by Honda from 1978 until 2001. The two-door coupe was produced over five generations, and was replaced by the Honda S2000. The Prelude's competitors in the North American market included the Toyota Celica, Isuzu Impulse, Mitsubishi Eclipse, Ford Probe and Mazda MX-6.
The Honda Prelude has been outfitted with a number of different engine choices over its lifespan. The first generation Prelude (1979 -1982) offered a 1.8 liter four cylinder that produced 75 horsepower. The second generation Prelude (1983 - 1987) featured engine options of 1.8 and 2.0 liter engines, producing 105 and 110 horsepower respectively. The third generation Preludes (1988 - 1991) featured a 2.0 liter engine producing 150 horsepower, while the fourth generation Prelude (1992 - 1996) also utilized a 2.0 liter engine that had a horsepower increase to 160 horsepower. The final generation of the Prelude (1997 - 2001) offered both a 2.0 liter and a 2.2 liter engine choice; the 2.2 liter engine had a horsepower rating of 200 horsepower. All generations of the Prelude were offered with either a manual or automatic transmission option. The final generation of the Prelude had a number of high-tech options, including four wheel steering and variable-valve timing.
The Honda Prelude was available with a long list of features that were typical for vehicles produced during its lifespan. Manual air conditioning on earlier generations, and automatic on later models, was an available option on the Prelude. Power steering, power door locks, and power windows all typical features that should be found on any Honda Prelude for sale. The final generation of the Prelude was offered with high-end options such as leather seating, "Sportshift" transmission, four wheel steering, and anti-lock brakes. The "Sportshift" transmission was an option on the Prelude is a four speed automatic transmission that also allows the driver to manually change gears in a fashion similar to the Porsche "tiptronic" transmission.
The Honda Prelude was a vehicle that was praised at the time of its production, and also continually improved over its lifespan. The Prelude was named to Car and Driver Magazine's "Ten Best" list 10 times over its production run. The U.S. government's crash test ratings for the Prelude improved dramatically over it lifespan; the first generation Prelude received only one star in frontal crash testing, but by the fifth generation the vehicle was receiving five star ratings in front crash testing. The general consensus on the Prelude was that it is a well-built, sporty coupe that gave the driver great performance at a budget price.

Celica GT Engine Replacement Options
Toyota Celica GT’s using the 1.8L 1ZZ-FE engine (from 2000-2005) often need engine replacement at or around 120,000 miles. This is not set in stone, and not to say that the engines used in these vehicles are bad, because they’re not. Rather, it is an indication of the poor maintenance and hard driving. With that said, there are excellent low mileage replacement engines available for Toyota Celicas. These engines are still available simply because of volume: Millions of 1ZZ-FE engines have been produced, and far more of these vehicles have been wrecked making their good running engines available than have had engines fail.
If your Toyota Celica GT engine has failed, you do not want to purchase a new engine from Toyota unless Toyota is paying for it as warranty work. You can purchase a slightly used Toyota Celica engine for a fraction of the cost of a new Toytoa Celica engine. Reputable suppliers will provide you with a two year warranty on any used Toyota Celica engine they sell, allowing you to buy and install your engine with confidence.
There are some things that competent professionals do when they install used Celica engines. The first thing is to install all new maintenance parts. These include all new belts, a new water pump, new spark plugs, a new thermostat, and all new fluids.
Many people have problem finding mechanics that regularly work installing used engines. You do not, under any circumstances, want to have a mechanic install an engine who is not experienced in this area. His inexperience might cost you your warranty, since no one will honor an engine failure caused by installation errors. There is an easy method to finding mechanics experienced in the installation of used engines. Installation of GT used engines is not difficult, but inexperience can cause mechanics to get nervous and do things that they know better than to do, such as starting and running an engine without an oil filter. I have seen this happen; it destroys too many good used engines.
If you haven’t found a mechanic experience in the installation of used engines, an easy way to do this is to go in person to your local parts stores and ask to talk with the manager. Let them know what kind of vehicle you have, and that you need a good mechanic to install an engine for you. You can save significant money here if you make a good impression with the manager and are polite. The manager might know a mechanic who installs used engines in an area of town you’re not familiar with, or they might know a mechanic who works at a dealership by day and installs engines out of their home at night and on weekends. If you can find a gem like this, you can really save money. You’ll pay less for your installation, the mechanic will make more than he would installing your engine at his work place, and everyone will be happier.
I hope this has helped you as you consider your options in replacing your Toyota Celica engine. Used engines offer a chance to save a great amount of money, get an excellent quality product, and drive for many years at a cost you can afford.
About the Author
There are several ways to pickle used engines, the most common being to pull the spark plugs and put a moisture displacing lubricant inside of it, turn the engine, and then put the spark plugs back in.
my 89 toyota celica gts has low ol pressure. new oil pump just rebuilt engine need help please.?
your engine was not rebuilt properly. the main and rod bearing oil clearences must be withing spec. usually a few thousenths of an inch. if they are not you will have low oil pressure. you can try runing a thicker oil and see if that helps.
1984 Toyota Celica GT-s from North America - Comments
The engine is missing. The timing is off. Oil is getting to the spark plugs. It's a blown seal or problem valve. Backfires. Rust is a big problem.
