Water was seeping through the discoloured wall tiles in the upstairs bathroom, and it was obvious that something had to be done to fix the problem before it became serious. Dave and Robin decided over breakfast that morning that the quickest and cheapest option was to remove the ancient blue bath tub and replace the tile with a plastic tub surround unit.

So they headed to the neighbouring city in the old Toyota pickup truck to try and get the best deal at one of the numerous building supply places. They found a decently priced unit at Rona and tossed the long white cardboard box into the back of the truck and tied it down with one strap.

To celebrate their wise purchase, they sped off to stop at their favourite pub in their home town for lunch. Once inside they picked a table by a window so they could see their Toyota and ordered a couple of beers. Robin was perplexed as she peered out the window. "Dave, " she started with a concerned tone in her voice, "I can't see the white box." Dave turned around and they both went outside to take a closer look. Sure enough, the white box had disappeared! Dave responded in anger and frustration, "you stay here while I go back to look for the tub surround." He jumped in the truck and squealed out of the parking spot and headed east in search of their lost package.

Robin returned to the table and drank not only her beer, but Dave's as well. "I might as well play some Kino," she thought out loud. Three was her lucky number and she picked 33. Voila! She won $201.00 on her first game, $5.00 on her second and nothing on the third.

Meanwhile a few miles down the highway Dave spotted the white box sitting in the center of the intersection. Upon closer examination he discovered to his dismay that the box was squished flat as a result of several vehicles running over it.

He pulled over and hurriedly scooped up the package, threw it in the back of the truck and raced back to the pub.

Seething with anger, Dave stormed into the pub and curtly told Robin that they were going home. Robin followed him outside trying to coerce him to have some lunch. She finally blurted that she had won over $200.00 which was more than the cost of the shattered tub surround ($160.00). Dave's temper simmered enough for them to return inside to celebrate their mixed blessings. Despite the cost of lunch and the waste of fuel going back to rescue the destroyed tub surround, they were still $5.00 ahead!

The next day Dave and Robin returned to Rona to relate their tale of woe to the store clerk. She sympathized with their misfortune and sold them the same tub surround at their employee discount! Their tale ended well and they had a few laughs sharing their misadventure with their friends. The moral of the story is this....use two straps, instead of one to secure a light cardboard box on the back of your truck, top of your van or car. Simple advice for sure, but you can be certain that Dave and Robin will not soon forget that lesson for years to come.
