How should I decorate this kitchen space?

I just moved into a wonderful new apartment, and the kitchen has this space that's about 1 foot tall between the ceiling and the cabinets that wraps around the kitchen and is just begging to have something decorative put on it. I'm designing the living room and kitchen to have a sleek, futuristic feel that makes use of chrome, glass, and the colors black and white primarily. I have a nice dish set that a friend gave me that would go nicely, but I'd like to hear other ideas for some inspiration. Thanks!

How about some lighting? Since you want a modern feel, you don't want it to appear cluttered. I saw on HGTV, someone used white christmas lights, just placed them up there and you couldn't even tell, just lighted up that space, looked nice. Just a suggestion.
