With rising fuel costs, more and more people and are looking for alternatives. One such alternative that is gaining popularity, especially with the do-it yourself types, are the electric vehicle kits. Anyone familiar with automobiles can now use these kits to convert traditional gas powered vehicles to one powered by electric current.
However, converting a traditional Gas powered vehicle into an electric vehicle can be a very daunting task. Only those who are the very mechanically minded should try this. To convert the vehicle will require extensive modifications to nearly all-mechanical parts of the car. Everything from the engine to the radiator, heater and air-conditioning, to the gauges on the panel. On top of that, the electric cars have to be recharged on a regular basis, which means having to purchase or use the services of recharging station. Solar power could be another potential source of power for the electric vehicle.
Can any car be converted into an electric vehicle?
Unfortunately, the answer is no. Not all cars can be converted into an electric vehicle. However, and the most common electric vehicle kit seems to be the Chevy S-10 pick up kit. For examples to follow just do a search online for Chevy S-10 pickup Electric conversions.
Other cars that are good candidates for conversion are the Chevy Geo, especially from 1989 to 1999. These cars are good potential candidates for an electric vehicle kit conversion. Cars similar to the Chevy Geo Metro, such as the Chevy Sprint, Pontiac Firefly and the Suzuki Swift are also ideal for conversions too.
Are there downsides to using an electric vehicle kit?
Going back a few years, many people associated electric powered vehicles with slowness and a lack of power. But as usual, thanks to technology, significant advances in the electric vehicle have changed all that. With these electric vehicle kits some cars can reach top speeds of between 70 and 75 mph. nonetheless, converting to electric power still has its drawbacks.
The biggest drawback it is of course the need for recharging the batteries. As an example, the Chevy Geo Metro kit must be recharged every 20 to 40 miles, depending on driving habits and battery quality. For city driving, this would be ideal. However, for lengthy commutes on the highway, this would not be ideal.
The Chevy S-10 with an electric vehicle kit installed will run a little longer on a single charge. On a single charge, the S-10 should last between 40 and 60 miles. Again this depends upon the driving habits as well as the size and quality of batteries. Some S-10 models can be equipped with solar powered panels which would in reduced in the need for charging, at least when driving during daylight hours.
Converting vehicles with electric vehicle kits is not a cheap affair. Most conversion kits seem to cost between $8000 to $10,000. And this does not even include professional installation as well as the cost of the batteries, not to mention access to or the purchase of a charging station.
Quite frankly, with the cost involved of using an electric vehicle kit, it probably wouldn't be very practical for the average consumer, especially if they do a lot of highway driving. However, that being said, it probably would be ideal for a back yard mechanic who loves to tinker with cars and has a few bucks to throw around and wants to impress his beer-drinking buddies.

Naples Suzuki Dealers May Feature New 3-Door Swift
Hatchbacks have become hot items over the last few years. As the focus of the automotive industry shifts from larger gas guzzlers to smaller, more economical vehicles, we're still seeing SUV-based cars come out on the market, but most have shown up in the form of crossovers. The advantage of the crossover lies mostly in the similar stylings of the SUV, extra storage room and room for more passengers and a better fuel efficiency based both on better engine options and a smaller size body. The hatchback factor is perfect for drivers that need a little extra storage room for camping, tailgating and the like.
As an avid camper, I was on the lookout for a sexy hatchback that would be able to fit all my equipment in a functional manner. Every summer, I take about six or seven camping trips with friends; nothing really moves me the way roasting marshmallows by the fire and sleeping under the stars does. Having some experience with hatchbacks, I headed over to my Naples Suzuki dealer, where I'd heard that the U.S. would be seeing a revamped version of the old Geo Metro – one that has had extreme success selling in European markets over the past couple of years.
The restyled and uber-functional Suzuki Swift doesn't disappoint, and while it isn't on the market yet, I found out a lot of interesting details about the vehicle. The Swift has the numbers to back up its global reputation, selling more than 1 million units worldwide over the past few years. Naples FL Suzuki dealers are excited to share in some of that excellent reputation and have been dying to get their hands on the vehicle since Suzuki announced the Swift would be reappearing in American markets. We don't know when we'll be seeing it yet, but you can bet your Naples Suzuki dealer will get some new customers when it does.
For now, the Swift is storming European markets with both three- and five-door designs, leveraging three different gas engines to get around. For the U.S. release, recent reports that have titillated your Naples Suzuki service claim that the U.S. release will see engine options that include the most powerful engine the Swift has been outfitted with to date and a new, even more fuel efficient hybrid option. Naples FL Suzuki drivers will get the functionality we need with a little twist of improved fuel economy and power.
We're hearing reports that the new version Swift hitting U.S. markets should be a front wheel drive model, but there are also rumors your Naples Suzuki service will see an all wheel drive version in the next few years. We're keeping our fingers crossed. There will also be a top of the line Sport version hitting the market in the next few years, so we'll keep our eyes open and keep you posted on that.
Until then, you can always hit a used dealership and test-drive a Geo Metro. They don't have anywhere near the greatness of the Swift, but you can close your eyes and pretend. We won't tell.

Any info on a motor swap in a geo metro to go from a G10 to a G13 DOHC?
I have a 1992 geo metro that i am wanting to do a motor swap on to go from the 1.0 3 cylinder with an auto tranny to the Suzuki swift 1.3 DOHC 4 cylinder with a manual tranny, I want as much info as you can give me, Prices, technical needs, or anything i need to know.
I can tell you that the motor swap would be extremely difficult. Even though the cars are both small it has to do with the equipment.
You would have to customize the engine mounts, and either find someone who could change the splined insert on the tranny to fit the geo engine or put a geo manual tranny in the swift. This would then need custom tranny mounts, new fit for the geo cv's you would have to put in, and run new linkage.
The linkage would be easy.
It's just not worth it.
Sell both and buy a running geo or swift, if that's what you like.
Three-Cylinder Cars: Always The Odd Ones Out?
Three-cylinder engines have been used in quite a few performance motorcycles—including legendary collectibles like the Triumph Trident and BSA Rocket 3—but among cars, at least here in the U.S. market, they've always seemed the odd ones out. Triples haven't earned a lot of respect or acceptance here, giving them a sort of...
