You might think that 6 liters was enough to make the Corvette two-seater fast enough, but not for the competition department lurking inside GM. They wanted to be able to compete head-to-head with the European supercars in the international endurance races for sports cars.

To do so, they took a leaf out of Ford's book. In the 1960s, when Ford found it could not compete with the smaller Ferraris at Le Mans with the 4.2 (ex-Indy) or 4.7 liter engines, they brought out their 7-liter mill. And it was so much bigger than the competition that they won. So the guys behind the Corvette decided to produce a 7-liter version of America's favorite and most famous sports car.

By the way, the 7 liter Corvette more than competes with the Dodge Viper SRT-10, which could give the standard Corvette a bit of a run for its money. Of course, this is not just any old engine. This is a very special version of its GEN IV 7.0 liter V-8.

This 2006 Corvette is challenging for muscle car of the year with no less than 500 bhp on tap at 6,200 rpm. Maximum torque from this mammoth engine is 475 lb ft at 4,800 rpm. This is bound to be a stunner with a top speed of about 185 mph and 0-60 in under 4.0 seconds. GM expects the quarter-mile be under 12 seconds.

To give durability, the engine has been beefed up in a number of ways. First, the connecting rods and inlet valves are now made of titanium - these weigh about half as much as steel ones and are used in quite a number of high-performance engines. Because of the low weight, the titanium parts put less load on other critical parts of the engine - the crankshaft, bearings and in this case the valve gear as well. The titanium valves also allow the engine to rev faster safely.

In fact, titanium used to be an aerospace-only material because it was so expensive, but it is now bein gused more in exotic cars and the heads of golf clubs, helping the lesser pros feel not so outclassed by Tiger Woods as they might with ordinary drivers.

You will see that the Corvette 7 liter is intended for the race track by the fact that the engine has a dry sump lube system. A dry sump system prevents the oil in the oil pan from slopping away from the pick-up on fast cornering - the sort you can do only on a track - and thus damaging the main bearings.

Instead of staying in the oil pan, the oil is pumped out to a tank, and then pressure fed from there directly to the engine bearings and other critical areas. Definitely a system for top supercars.

The underpinnings of the car have also been beefed up with a new aluminum perimeter frame which reduces weight. Further weight reduction comes with a new magnesium engine sub-frame. To ensure the car is stiff enough, it will be available only as a hardtop. The front fenders and wheelarches are now carbon fiber composite panels, which also reduce weight.

But there's more...

To get all that power onto the road, and to get it to stop, bigger wheels, tires and brakes have been fitted. The front brake discs are now 13.9 inch diameter, and 19 x 12 inch wide rims are used at the back; front wheels are 18 x 9.5 inches. Such massive rear tires for a car with 50:50 weight distribution suggest that the car will have a tendency to oversteer - smoky drifts could be the order of the day!

All-in-all, this is a really special car, developed to compete with the best.

The only downfall I have found with this rain barrel is that the planter on top of the rain barrel did not come with a drain. I had to drill a small hole in the planter before I could plant the flowers. It is a shallow pan, so leaving the flowers in pots was not an option, as you could see the tacky plastic containers. Other than that, I am very pleased with the item. It holds a lot of water and it is actually attractive enough that I have displayed it in front of my house. The color is more straight terra cotta plastic than the rustic look that is shown in the picture, but that does not take away from any of the positive aspects.

Helped stop walkway flooding

I purchased this waterbarrel for three reasons 1) water collection; 2) solve a drainage problem; 
3) attractiveness. I was having a problem with my front walkway flooding during heavy rains in Florida and this helps immensely. The item arrived and was packaged very well and I received all of the parts stated. I did have to purchase the overflow hose and clamp recommended in the instructions (it is larger in size then mentioned in some reviews). I also replaced the hose based on the other reviews. My husband attached the spigot and bottom hose using the enclosed teflon tape and it doesn't leak. I drilled several holes in the top of the container, placed a plant and have not had any problems with it filling up. We elevated the barrel with a few decorative blocks, cut the downspout and attached a flexible hose. It fits perfectly into the hole provided in the barrel top. The first rain was slight and the spigot did not work because there wasn't enough water in it, but the hose at the bottom was able to be used for filling a watering can. The next day's heavy rain filled the barrel completely and the overflow went down the driveway as anticipated. There was no washout between the top and barrel. The gravity operation worked through the spigot and the bottom hose after this rain. I also used a pump and hose to water plants and remove the remaining water from the barrel. I have received many complements on the barrel and plan to purchase a few more. I also placed a picture with the item.

Useful and Ornamental

As a teen, my granny used to always say to me (as I stood around, no doubt rolling my eyes and being very teen-like), "You might as well be useful as well as ornamental." (I hated it at the time, but now I think it's hilarious.) 

Well, this rainwater urn must've overheard Granny, because it fills the bill. It looks great in my back yard, and I have people oohing and ahhing over it all the time. But it's not just ornamental; it really does the job well. The spigot works great (although it was a bit tough getting it to thread into the urn, but maybe that was just my luck). You can "daisy-chain" several together with the overflow spout. And it's easy to connect soaker hoses and such so you can gently water your plants. It also was a cinch (except for the above-mentioned threading troubles) to assemble. 

My only tiny gripe is a wish the pan on top was a little deeper so I could really plant some cool plants in it. Imagine how pretty it would look with a nice spike of something fairly tall and a sweet potato vine or two trailing down the sides ...

Nice Rain Barrel

I bought this rain barrel because others I looked at were so unattractive and I desperately wanted to corral and utilize the water that was pouring off my roof at an inconvenient spot. I also based my purchase on other reviews. It was easy to put together. Other reviews will tell you the quality of the hose is not good. Probably so. I havent used mine as I have my rain barrel sitting on the ground and the hose doesn't work very well from ground level. Apparently the hose needs to be lower than the barrel. I would have thought the water pressure would be enough but I guess not. You might want to raise yours up on blocks. Anyway, I use the spigot and I get a pretty good flow out of that into my buckets. This thing is big looking but I was surprised at how quickly it filled up. One heavy Florida rainfall did it. Mine did not come with an overflow hose. You need one. The overflow poured out onto my grass and dug a hole in the ground. Since then I've purchased a $10 sump pump hose at either Lowes or HD - can't remember which - and I now have the overflow running out smoothly at ground level. I stuck some small potted plants in the planter for now as the planter top does not have drainage holes. I will probably drill a few holes and glue some screen underneath as I don't really want dirt in my barrel. Oh..make sure the barrel is exactly where you want it before connecting it to your water supply. Once filled it is not moveable. The barrel does attract a good bit of attention. Not too many people are familiar with rain barrels and those that are are unaware they can be made reasonably attractive. It's great if you need a rain collector in a highly visable spot in your yard.

I do recommend that when putting the barrel together that you epoxy the area around the hose (bottom of the barrel) as well as around the water spigot to prevent any minor leaks (65 gallons of water create quite a bit of pressure). Do not forget to drill a few holes in the planter (make sure that they are large enough) and utilize the a piece of permeable material to keep the dirt from going into the barrel. This diverter kit really works well and it is very easy to install. Finally, the Cascata Rain Barrel is decorative and will enhance any garden. In fact, many of our neighbors have stopped by to ask about the rain barrel and they have all mentioned how nice it looks in the garden. We would definitely recommend the Cascata Rain Barrel and, in fact, we are planning on purchasing a few more in the near future.
