Subaru's new Impreza WRX goes on sale in Japan this week as a late 2007 model, and with it come greater anticipation for the high-performance STI version, which won't be officially revealed until the Tokyo auto show in October later this year.
The Subaru Impreza WRX five-door hatchback (known as the Impreza S-GT in Japan) features a turbocharged 2.0-liter version of the Subaru boxer-4, and it produces 248 horsepower at 6,000 rpm. When this car hits U.S. shores this fall as a 2008 model, it will have a 2.5-liter iteration of this engine that produces about 225 hp and 226 pound-feet of torque. In the UK, tight European emissions laws mean buyers won't be offered the WRX model when the hatch arrives there later this year.
Meanwhile, the "wilder", high-performance 2008 Subaru WRX STI expected to remain under cover until the Tokyo auto show already has a few key facts leaked.
The WRX STI draws motorsports technology directly from Subaru expertise in World Rally Championship (WRC) competition and is designed to appeal to the most serious driving enthusiasts. STI stands for Subaru Tecnica International -- the high-performance and motorsports subsidiary of Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd.
The highly anticipated STI is set to be powered by a tuned version of the 2.5-litre boxer engine turbocharged to produce more than 300hp and around 400Nm of torque, be mated to Subaru's existing six-speed manual box. A new automated manual, sourced from specialist firm Aisin, is expected to join the line-up when the latest Impreza is facelifted in 2009.
Subaru is making sure that the new Impreza can and will give its archrival, the 2008 Mitsubishi Evo X - which will feature an optional twin-clutch sequential-manual gearbox with steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles - a run for its money.
The top Impreza will offer a range of unique styling additions, including a specially developed bonnet, grille and a wide front bumper with big air intakes.
Flared wheelarches house smart 18-inch alloys, which will hide the existing STI's Brembo brake system. Buyers can expect to see minor tweaks to the all-wheel-drive system, and engineers have also taken the opportunity to tune the handling, thanks to a more compact double wishbone rear suspension set-up.
Inside, the new Impreza range boasts higher-quality trim, with the STI getting a pair of supportive bucket seats up front to boost its sporty appeal.
Subaru (maker of top of the line Subaru oxygen sensor), has also told Inside Line that a turbocharged boxer-4 diesel for the WRX is in the works and should be out by early 2009. The company is reportedly eager to drop a high-mpg diesel into the Forester and Impreza soon after the Legacy gets Subaru's first diesel next summer, so the WRX is part of the program. Sources from Subaru have also reportedly confirmed that the company is working on a five-speed automatic and a continuously variable transmission, and both these options could be offered as early as mid-2009.
Subaru is a Japanese car company and is the automotive division of Fuji Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (FHI). It is currently an affiliate of Toyota Motor Corporation, with it owning 8.7% of FHI. They acquired that stake from General Motors, who bought 20% of FHI in 1999 to have an extended presence in international markets, and collaborate technologically with FHI.
FHI has recently set a new theme for Subaru cars that emphasizes Subaru's goal: Subaru offers a comfortable, pleasant drive for the driver and passengers; provides peace of mind and reliability; and extends convenience, utility and functionality.

Subaru Puts Impreza Wrx on a Strict Diet
The next-gen Impreza WRX photos have been released earlier than the embargo deadline by Road & Track. The official debut of the car took place at the 2007 New York Auto Show in April. Obviously, the upcoming WRX has undergone a strict diet to strip those unwanted bulges.
“It’s refreshing to catch a glimpse of the top-mounted intercooler while looking at the functional hood scoop on the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX. So many scoops, vents and wings are purely cosmetic nowadays. That the rest of the car is as mature and functional is a bonus,” said Phil Floraday of Auto Week.
“Wagon fans will notice that the wagon becomes a hatchback and goes by the term ‘five-door.’ The change from wagon to five-door also drops 110 pounds from the curb weight, so we have no complaints. Sedans only drop 50 pounds. To simplify matters, there will be no TR model at launch, but Subaru hasn’t ruled it out for later,” he added.
Subaru spent some time modifying the WRX to pave the way for a sleek and gorgeous car with exceptional performance and handling.
According to leaked documents posted on NASIOC.com, the Subaru Impreza WRX will be sold to the public starting September this year as a 2008 model car. During the New York Auto Show unveiling of the car, a spokesman announced that the next-gen Impreza WRC will be based on the hatch version of the car.
The upcoming car will be available in both a five-door hatch and a sedan. The engine used is still the EJ255. Peak horsepower and torque as the same, but the peak horsepower will output at 5600 rpm and the peak torque at 2800 rpm.
The sedan version has two exhaust outlets while the hatchback will have one exhaust outlet on the right. The car is based on a shortened Legacy platform. The front suspension uses a MacPherson strut setup while the rear is a new double wishbone suspension. Additionally, aluminum parts have been dropped due to the rising costs.
The EPA gives the next-gen car 19 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway. Those who test drove the car said the numbers could probably be improved by a sixth gear, allowing for a better economy at freeway speeds. So far, the WRX has not been rated for emissions yet.
Wayne Cunningham of CNET has this to say: “Subaru's WRX gained cult popularity among video gamers and drivers who wanted racing performance on a budget. We tested out the newest iteration, the 2008 Subaru Impreza WRX, and have some bad news: the WRX has matured. Oh, it still has rally handling, a screaming engine, and a scoop on the hood for its intercooled turbocharger. But its refined body style will make it fit right in the corporate parking lot, and even the Subaru Forester has a hood scoop.”
Subaru rivals with the Legacy Spec.B, an all-wheel-drive car that offers Subaru's SI drive system. For about half the money, shoppers could also get the all-wheel-drive Suzuki SX4, although you should wait to see how well it does in World Rally Car competition, Cunningham noted.
What are the WRX’ good points? Taking Subaru car cover off the next-gen Impreza reveals the essentials. Enthusiasts say that the most fascinating feature of the car is the all-wheel-drive system which helps it hold the corners well. What is more, the navigation system has impressive graphics and a complete points-of-interest database; and the stereo has the most tweakable equalizer. What about the not-so good points? They say the unavailable Bluetooth cell phone integration and its mediocre fuel economy.

Question about the 2008 subaru impreza wrx?
If I were to purchase a 2008 subaru impreza wrx, can I get the STi hatchback spoiler installed and all the other goodies they offer to add on their website?
Yes you can. The spoiler even comes painted if you have one that is the came color as the STI's. I think only white is different. Other accessories will depend. Front grill will fit but front lip spoiler will not. I have seen a WRX with the STI spoiler and it looks like it should have come that way. Really nice.
