Its quite an odd looking vehicle and looks more like a large boxy, family estate car rather than a full on 4x4.

As its based on the Impreza fuel economy for the Forester is car like and 30mpg easily achieved, with a low group 11car insurance. Running costs are very reasonable thanks to above-average reliability and long service intervals.

Inside, the Forester has excellent boot space with split fold rear seats for practicality and a good level of safety features, including air bags for driver and passenger. The All Weather pack option adds front fog lamps, heated front seats, electrically heated mirrors and windscreen wiper de-icers. Leather upholstery is also available on the Turbo S model. 

So what you get with a Subaru Forester is a 4x4 that that drives and handles more like a car, with strong reliable engines that have more than proved themselves. The Forester is a good 4x4 compromise, that can average 30mpg with a low insurance group and a strong resale value and a worthy consideration for part time off road work.

The 2010 Subaru Impreza Comes In 4 Different Body Styles

The 2010 Subaru Impreza is available as a hatchback, sedan, WRX hatchback and sedan, and STi. The Impreza hatchback comes equipped with a 2.5 liter, 4-cylinder, horizontally opposed Subaru Boxer engine. The single overhead cam (SOHC) is non-turbo and naturally aspirated. It produces 170 horsepower at 6000 rpm and 170 lb-ft of torque at 4400 rpm.

The Impreza sedan is available in one trim, the 2.5i, and shares the same 2.5 liter engine as the hatchback. The Impreza is available in a 4 speed automatic and an optional 5 speed manual. Both are hooked up to Subaru's symmetrical all-wheel drive system. The estimated fuel economy for the hatchback and sedan is 20 mpg city and 27 mpg freeway.

The engine of the WRX is a thoroughly upgraded 2.5 liter, turbocharged, dual overhead cam (DOHC) Boxer engine with a newly designed intercooler. This turbocharger (model IHI RHF5VF52) is an upgrade from the turbochargers used in the WRX models 2001-2007 (MHI TDO4 13T) and 2008-2009 (same model as the previous, but with modified compressor housing similar to the Subaru Legacy IHI RHF5 VF40). The 2010's upgraded manifold means that power now comes earlier as the mid-range RPM is emphasized. Peak numbers have jumped to 265 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 244 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, as compared with the 2006-2007 2.5 liter which produced only 230 horsepower at 6,000 and 217 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. The WRX now comes exclusively with a 5-speed manual transmission and symmetrical all-wheel drive. The estimated fuel economy for the WRX is 18/25.

The Subaru Impreza STi is based on the Impreza hatchback and has a 2.5L DOHC Boxer engine that makes 305 horsepower at 6,000 rpm along with 290 lb-ft of torque at 4,400 rpm. This is only available in a six-speed manual transmission. The STi has an estimated fuel economy of 18/25.

If by faster you mean top speed, the answer is emphatically no. Group-N Rally cars have a top speed around 120mph, limited by the gearing. The Group-N car is about 300hp and about 450ft-lb. A stock STi is 300/300. The STi has a conventional manual so it has slow shifts, the WRC car has a sequential gearbox that is worth more than a brand new STi, and has some of the quickest gear changes of all automotive transmissions. The WRC car, finally, is geared for the best acceleration up to 120-ish MPH, with no regard for fuel economy. The STi has taller gears for fuel economy and the ability to cruise on highways at sane RPMs.
