With the seasons changing, nature destroyed, and the general state of life on earth, one wonders whether we are close to the end; as we race along our path of self-destruction. The depletion of the water supply on earth threatens, the hole in the ozone layer threatens and the continued strife in the world among mankind determines our own end.

Although this terrible result seems unavoidable, the wonder of nature contrasting to human life stil thrills me. What follows is a song, originally a poem, which I wrote a couple of years ago; notice the contrast of living.

PEACE IN THE VALLEY

Hush in the valley;

Hawk hovers aloft, scanning the food chain.

Mice scurry, darting for cover in the bush,

Crickets squeak & chirp, calling to their kin,

As sparrow swoops down through the brush.

Dung beetle rolls his stash to his far-off nest.

Myriads of insects skim the surface of the lake,

Expanding rings appear as Trout surface for their catch of the day.

Crocodile lifts his brow and lazily falls asleep again.

Wild rush in New York City, Two Boeings fly into the World Trade Centre;

World markets reel, the global economy teeters at the brink of collapse.

Whilst back in the Valley of Eden, peace & structure prevail.

Elephant rolls in the mud bath along the river bank and ponders.

Fake war in Afghanistan, to kill just one man,

Weak excuse for a war against Iraq,

The value of human lives is negligible; we are

Slaughtered for an ideology or the price of a barrel of oil.

There are no straight lines or linear parameters in the valley,

But total conformity, all of nature in harmony.

Order & discipline is the order of each day,

Real life as intended,

In the Valley Of Eden.

Muddy elephant, matriarch of the troop, flaps her ears as winter approaches.

She scrapes the earth with her huge foot and billows her trumpet call.

Young & old, babes & middle aged gather about her,

Preparing for the long annual trek along an age old path.

Matriarch's forebears have trodden along this same path

For hundreds or thousands of years, generation after generation.

As the troop sets off in platoon formation, young in the centre,

An F16 bomber screams overhead, Matriarch looks up perplexed,

She bows & shakes her wise old head, ears flapping loudly.

Another bomber jet tears through the sky, raping the peace & harmony,

As the troop pushes on at a trot, as if to escape this human abortion.

Baboon perches against a Baobab tree, scratches & shakes his head.

Matriarch leads the troop of elephants for three weeks along treacherous paths,

As a pack of lions attacks a straggling babe.

Hundreds of kilometres north of The Valley, near the Equator,

The large troop of elephant settle for the winter to forage & mate at will

In relative safely as the young grow stronger & more independent.

The Valley to the South continues in conformity as always.

Silicone Valley invents a new, more advanced motherboard,

Mankind joins the IT chase to have the latest hardware & software,

The latest games are much more advanced, more violent than before,

Corporates spend millions of Dollars acquiring the latest IT trends,

As Matriarch & clan eat the rotting fruit of the Amarula tree,

Reeling & frolicking, in a drunken stupor, their annual splash party.

Summer draws near; Matriarch summonses her troop for the return march.

The dry earth suckles deeply as the rain lashes the earth.

Natural lakes spring up as the water table is replenished,

Wild blossoms spring to life, washing the ground with colour.

Lush green leaves re-appear on the trees & bushes,

Spring is ceremoniously announced by splendour of colour & song.

Matriarch leads her troop back into The Valley of Eden,

Mature males unceremoniously expelled to their laird, mating over.

The Valley & all living beings welcome the troop back home,

Awash in the splendour of new life, the cycle begins again.

Matriarch wonders, "Can man tell Heaven from Hell", "blue skies from pain?"

"Can they tell a green field from a cold steel rail, a smile from a veil?"

"Do they trade hot ashes for trees and hot air for a cool breeze?"

Tectonic plates are moving, continental drift is in progress,

Seasons change steadily, planets aligning with the sun and the moon.

Pyramids in Egypt, Mexico and Peru align with their cosmic equivalents,

Sirius and her sun still orbiting, the cycle continues unabashed.

As the Earth continues on its lopsided wobble, the next arch is built,

The Messenger foretells mass destruction of the globe, very few will survive.

By fire, flood, earthquakes and volcanic force the next ice age begins.

Silicone valley totally destroyed.

Real life begins its natural cycle yet again.

In "the civilised world" humans are slaughtered for an ideology,

We war with each other over the price of a barrel of oil.

But in the Valley there are no straight lines or linear parameters,

Only total and sovereign conformity,

All of nature living in absolute harmony.

Order and discipline is the order of each day,

Real life as intended;

In the Valley Of Eden.
