A mechanics question for all you engineers out there...?

The piston diameter of a diesel engine is 310 mm and the maximum compressive pressure
in the cylinder is 7.5 MPa. Four steel bolts hold the cylinder, each with effective diameter
of 50 mm and length 900 mm. Estimate the maximum tensile stress and elongation in
each bolt due to the pressure in the cylinder. Assume equal loading for each bolt.
Assume E = 210 GPa.

Force on the top of the cylinder:
F = Pressure × Area = P × πr²
F = 7.5 MPa × π × (0.155m)² = 566kN

By definition, σ = F/A = 566kN / [4 × π × (0.025m)²]= 72.08 MPa

By definition, E = σ / ε ==> ε = σ / E = 72.08 MPa / 210 GPa = 343 × 10^-6

By definition, ε = ΔL / L ==> ΔL = L × ε = 0.9m × 343 × 10^-6 = 309µm
