Breaking in New Mariner Outboards
Breaking in an engine properly is one of the keys to long engine life. Getting it wrong can cause hidden damage to piston rings, crankshafts, and bearings. Gears and bearings can be chipped or burred. All manufacturers have a recommended procedure that must be followed to ensure warranty coverage of their engines.
The damage caused can cause problems that may not show up on outboard motors until after the warranty period is over... ouch! expensive! The best advice is to follow manufacturer's recommendations or, in the case of a newly overhauled engine, the directions provided by the rebuilder.
To provide you with a standard checklist is difficult, because recommendations vary from one manufacturer to another. The acceleration and superior top speed available from the Mariner Optimax range or the Supercharged Four Stroke Verados must be safeguarded early in the life of the engines.
Guidelines for breaking in Mariner outboards.
Be certain that the fuel used meets minimum octane requirements as specified in the manual. Most mamanufacturers require at least "regular", with a minimum "69 RON" internationally. The main issue is not octane, but the blending of alcohol in the fuel. Alcohol in outboard fuel has become a problem, affecting smooth running.
Newer engines do now use components modified to withstand alcohol exposure.
Fuel additives and fuel conditioners need also to be manufacturer recommended.
Two-stroke outboard engines get lubrication exclusively from the mixture of fuel and oil, and you don't want to interfere with this chemical process. Grades of engine oil affect excess carbon buildup on piston and rings, leading to failure. Deposits of carbon are directly attributable to less-than-perfect fuel and oil mixtures. Mix ratio when breaking in an engine should contain double the ratio of oil to fuel than that used afterwards.
Mercury Verados operating procedures.
Don't let the engine idle for long periods. Don't use full throttle or race the engine at maximum speed. Check cooling water is circulating. Vary engine speed every 10 to 15 minutes. Consult your Mercury Verados manual and your warranty, and be sure to follow the recommendations to the letter to ensure continued warranty coverage. After the period of breaking in, switch to a normal fuel/oil mix.

Mechanical Seals Selects Cimage Document Management
Applications include the main and drawback rams of most types of hydraulic presses, as well as universal duties on many other hydraulic mechanical seal cylinder glands, piston heads and valves.
The original Chevron multi-lip design has proved its reliability and long working life over many years, particularly in safety criticasl situations and under adverse mechanical seal conditions.
Its new acetal copolymer gland ring gives improved support to the seal's intermediate rings of rubberised fabric. By optimising the gland ring design to take full advantage of the copolymer's high fatigue resistance, James Walker has effectively eliminated the stress cracking problems, caused by repeated pressure cycling, that were previously associated with other makes of acetal ring.
Extensive research and testing prove that the new rings combine excellent mechanical strength with exceptional dimensional stability - even at the seal's maximum operating temperature of +100°C. The acetal rings also show good resistance to hydrolysis for service with the water-based hydraulic fluids used in high fire-risk areas.
The new Chevron design is supplied in split and endless types as standard, in sizes from 14mm to 250mm OD, including those for ISO 5597 long depth housings. Above 250mm OD the original header and rubberised fabric gland ring will be supplied.
Independent tests confirm the low-friction claims. When fitted in a gland housing at 10MPa and 40MPa compressive stress, Supagraf LF displayed friction coefficients of 0.11 and 0.07, respectively. The coefficients for standard graphite rings were exactly double at 0.22 and 0.14.
Torque-versus-cycle results proved even more impressive. In extended tests, valve stem torque remained constant at 5Nm for Supagraf LF, whereas for standard graphite rings the torque rose from 21Nm to 25Nm during the first 300 operating cycles. With a lubricated valve stem, the torque for standard graphite rings increased from 7Nm to 23Nm during the first 150 cycles as the lubricant was removed by valve action.
The secret of success for Supagraf LF is a special coating, 5μm thick, sinter-bonded to the surfaces of the expanded graphite rings before the moulding process. With this coating the rings have performed 20,000 low friction valve stem cycles with fugitive emission control of methane gas to 50ppm or less. Further tests showed satisfactory performance up to 60,000 cycles with normal manual adjustments along the way.
The new rings will operate at temperatures from -200°C to +350°C, or at a maximum system pressure in valves of 150bar. They are chemically inert to media in the range pH 0-14, and also have a fire-safe capability.
Supagraf LF moulded rings are supplied in endless form or, for ease of installation, with a single split and as matched scarf-split halves. Inside diameters range from 2mm to over 1100mm: sections from 1.5mm to 40mm.
The new rings are particularly effective on valves that handle dry gases and other process media where the friction on standard graphite mechanical seal is unacceptably high, leading to valve stem sticking and hesitation.

can you help me guesstimate the cost of rebuilding my 4.3l?
Ok my 89 chevy 4.3l is pretty well worn. I'd like to pull it, rejuvenate it and drop it back in. No mods or upgrades, just a standard rebuild on a stock engine.
My plan is:
complete gasket set
all new bearings and rings
new oil pump
new sensors
reuse:
cam
crank
rods
pistons
timing gears / chain
valves
maybe reuse valve springs
and take the heads to a machine shop and have them redo the valve guides and seats.
Assuming my internal parts are fine and I don't need any machine work other than the heads, can someone give me a ballpark? Would I be saving anything rebuilding myself or should I just use the motor as a core deposit?
Is there anything I am forgetting here?
>>>Assuming my internal parts are fine <<<
If that is the case, why tear it down anyway?
If the crank is within spec you can polish and re-use it. Same with the cam. Take the heads and the stem seals from the gasket kit and let the shop do those. They will check spring tension and replace as needed. On the block, be sure to remove all "freeze" plugs and flush the water passages very well. Be sure to clean all oil galleys as well. Unless replacing, keep the lifters and pushrods separated so they go back in the same bore.
It would really be wise to replace the pistons. The way the rings fit in the grooves is critical. Trying to re-use the chain and gears is a false economy also. A new chain and gear set is less than $20.00. You might also want to have the machine shop check the bore and repair as needed. An overbore isn't expensive at all.
Cost will depend on where you buy your parts and the machine work, but the parts you will need (minus crank and cam but including pistons) would be around 4 to 5 hundred bucks from my supplier.
If you look online, you can find some good deals on engine kits.
