Chengdu is known as China's happiest city, and therefore has its happiest people. It is believed that part of the reason for this is the leisurely and slow-paced lifestyle that many of them live. It is ingrained in the very fiber of Chengdu culture.
Chengdu is famous for many reasons, first, is its local cuisine. Chengdu cuisine is one of China's four most famous food styles. Known as Chuan style food, it is well-known for its delicious spiciness. It is not spicy, just to be spicy, but each dish is unique and flavorful. One of Chengdu's resident's favorite ways to eat dinner, is to do so while taking a walk. A couple or an entire family will walk through the streets of Chengdu in the evening. Along Chengdu's streets can be found many small stands selling local favorites. The majority of these small stands sell dishes that can be conveniently carried, so people walking along the streets will stop at one stand pick out something, and continue on their walk and then stop at another. It is a wonderful way to spend the evening.
Another inseparable part of Chengdu people's daily life is the teahouse. Chengdu is the last bastion of traditional Chinese teahouses. Scattered throughout the city, the teahouses are much more than just a place to drink tea. They are a meeting center, a place to conduct business, meet with old friends, or make new ones. Many people love to go to a teahouse in the morning and spend the day there. Besides tea, most teahouses offer food, and snacks to clients. Traveling businessmen offer services such as massages, ear cleaning, and fingernail cutting. Many teahouses offer some performances such as storytelling, local opera, or live music. When most people decide it is time to leave, they will gather what snacks they have left, and give them to the people sitting at the table next to theirs. Chengdu locals love playing Mahjong, and after work the sounds of Mahjong tiles can be heard clicking all around the city. When someone is not present, local people jokingly say that that person is either playing Mahjong, or on their way to play Mahjong. It is an ancient game that is easy to learn, but takes a lifetime to master. It is extremely addicting, and most locals will play the game all night, and sometimes well into the next day.
Chengdu Opera, one of the five most famous operas in China is extremely popular with locals. Chengdu Opera is unique from most local operas in China because the performance offers more than just singing, and martial arts. It also features acrobatics, fire-breathing, and the magic of face changing. Face changing is an art in which a performer comes onto stage wearing a silk mask with an opera characters face on it. The actor struts around stage, and with a flick of his head, the mask is instantly changed for another. It is done with such speed, that it is impossible to tell how it is done, making it seem like a magic show in the middle of the opera.
Chengdu is also home to many festivals that are uniquely its own. Each year Chengdu puts on a ballad festival at Wangcong Temple where people from around the country come to sing for onlookers. Chengdu's famous flower festival is held every February and is a harbinger of spring. People from throughout China and around the world head to Chengdu each spring to see its famous flower festival. One thing that all Chengdu residents' love is peach blossoms and peach trees can be found throughout the city. Every spring when the peach blossoms are in bloom, the city holds a huge peach blossom festival and the entire city explodes with color.
Chengdu has much more to see than just its famous sites. To spend a little time with the locals in a teahouse, or at an opera will give visitors a glimpse into the lifestyle that residents treasure. It is a unique experience that cannot be found anywhere else in the world.

Spring Is In The Air... Here Are My Top 10 Things To Do To Welcome Spring
1. Get Some Vitamin D...the old fashioned way...That's right, get some rays! Now I'm not talking about basting in the sun all day, more like just sitting outside for 15 minutes and getting a healthy glow. You can just feel the magic healing powers of the sun's rays while you take in a few deep breaths of that cool crisp air...everybody say yeahhhh.
2. Workin at the Car Wash... All that salt and grime has got to go, but instead of just driving through the local car wash put on the tunes, your favorite cut off jeans and lather up your ride. Lose the grime and dirt and maybe a few pounds as you make washing your car your latest work-out.
3. Buy some crisp new Sheet and Pillowcases...If you've survived another winter with those flannelet sheets, it's time to leave that sand papery feel and buy an exquisite set of a high thread count of cotton sheets. There's something about the coolness of cotton that says "bring on the summer weather".
4. Stop living the Broke N' Life...Do you have one of those homes that after a long winter is full of broken things? It's amazing how broken things almost become invisible after awhile. You know what I mean...the broken screen door, the interlocking brick work that shifted out of place with ice and all those burnt out light bulbs. I finally realized that all of those broken things were secretly making me feel like I was brok n' life and without getting into all the psychology...just fix the stuff and you'll feel better.
5. Jazz up the Pantry...Oh yeah, it's outdoor cooking time again! Time to get out to the home shows and neighborhood gourmet shops and stock up on all the newest sauces, marinades and cooking ingredients. Try to make a meal from a different country once a month. There's at least 900 ways to cook up that steak. Have fun and discover something new and delicious.
6. Out with the old...Time to de-clutter and donate. If you want to actually save money on clothes go through your closet and discover what you actually have. You'll be amazed at how many white shirts you own. Sometimes we just buy the same look over and over again. Throw out the repetitive clothing and the outfits you'll never wear again or better still, donate them to a local charity. You might just find that you really don't need to buy new clothes this Spring at all and can get by with just a few new stylish accessories.
7. Redecorate on a Budget...by watching T.V!...Wow those home designing shows have saved me a fortune on decoration costs. I've changed my country look to contemporary with just a few pails of paint. With money tight these days we really should be tightening up the budget on that fancy new kitchen and outdoor living area. Before you sit in the drivers seat and head out to the neighborhood home decorating store, sit in the seat in front of the T.V. and cut your budget down to half with some of this country's best decorators and their design-on-a-dime advice.
8. Take $50 and re-vamp your look...Take a good look in the mirror and see what old man winter has done to you. Smile and head out to the local drugstore and start looking marvelous again. There are so many shiny hair products, teeth whiteners, skin moisturizing products to make you feel alive again and give you back your healthy glow.
9. Get Green... Ever clean your home and get a headache after wards? I found out that all those chemicals that I was using around the house were really making me sick. I discovered that by helping the environment and buying organic green products I not only helped the earth but helped my own health as well.
10. Get out there...Dig out those running shoes and get out for a brisk walk with your spouse, yourself or your kids. Enjoy the spring weather and all the healing aspects the cool fresh air can give you. "Spring is in the air" for such a short time, enjoy it while you can...staying inside again with the air conditioner on full blast is just around the corner.
