Since 1986, millions of Ford Taurus models have been sold, a testimony to a midsize sedan that offers value, good styling, plenty of interior room and reliability. During the late 1990s, an unfortunate design change turned off thousands of customers, but in recent years the Taurus has been making a come back, currently in the form of a full sedan sedan for the Ford fleet.

The 2010 model is the most dramatic update for the Taurus since its inception. Larger than ever before, Ford decided to forgo mass volume in exchange for a full size sedan segment leader, one that the automaker hopes will shine the light on the rest of the Ford line up. Judging by its looks, the all new Taurus succeeds, but it may be under the hood where the new Taurus truly shines.

Reviving The Taurus Franchise

The Taurus nearly died in 2007 when the automaker decided not to maintain production of the sedan. For years, sales had been lagging and the Taurus name no longer represented design flair, cutting edge technology or value, attributes found in the first generation model. Instead, the bulbous shaped Taurus was ugly, outdated and no longer a contender to new segment leaders, the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord.

But Ford's new CEO, ex-Boeing chair Alan Mulally, had a different idea. Instead of dumping a damaged, but still well known product line, Mulally convinced Ford executives to rename its larger Five Hundred model the Taurus. That move allowed Ford to keep the Taurus alive long enough to bring the next generation model to the market, a new sedan introduced Summer 2009.

The 2010 Ford Taurus will not ever match the sales levels of the late 1980s and early 1990s, when the Taurus was the best selling car in America, selling more than 400,000 units annually. Instead, Ford will be satisfied if the bigger and more expensive Taurus sells at least 50,000 units during its first year with hopes of eventually peaking at 100,000 units within a few years time.

Redefining The Ford Taurus

The change in the Taurus' direction is significant as Ford seeks to redefine what it means to be a full sized sedan, let alone what it means to be a Taurus. A five passenger model, the cockpit of the Taurus is smartly designed for the second decade of the 21st century.

Ford SYNC, a hands-free voice-activated calling, MP3 and GPS system is standard across the Taurus line. A Sony stereo provides unmatched sound while push button start is standard. Ford's MyKey technology, which is innovative technology to track and warn teen drivers whose driving habits may put themselves in danger is also included. And, to emphasize the sedan's sport flair, shift paddles allow drivers to have a much more engaging driving experience.

Safety features in the Taurus are abundant and include a Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) which helps drivers avoid swerving into a lane occupied by another driver, rain sensing wipers, auto high beams, rear camera and power sunshade. Side impact air bags and a safety canopy with rollover sensor is also included. Indeed, a number of the features found in the Taurus are not offered by its direct competitors but are much like what Lexus, BMW and Mercedes might offer in its similar sized sedans.

Introducing EcoBoost Technology

The Ford Taurus also helps to introduce EcoBoost engine technology which is being rolled out in select Ford and Lincoln models beginning with the 2010 model year. That optional engine, a 3.5L EcoBoost(TM) 24-valve DOHC V6, delivers V8 power but maintains V6 fuel economy. Indeed, with 365 horsepower and an amazing 350 lb.-ft of torque, the ginned up Taurus has power numbers rivaling some of the top sport coupes on the market. Standard engine is a 3.5L Duratec V6; both engines are paired with six-speed automatic transmissions which helps the Taurus achieve class leading fuel economy levels. Front wheel drive is standard; all wheel drive is optional.

The 2010 Ford Taurus offers so many more improvements over the 2009 and earlier models. With Ford sales now on a roll, the Taurus should contribute to Ford's success, helping the renowned automaker find its way in a rapidly changing automotive market.

How to Buy a Mercury Monterey or Mountaineer Engine

If for some reason you need to buy a replacement engine for your Mercury Monterey engine or Mountaineer, below are some of the things you may want to know.

The Monterey, being the Mercury variant of the Ford Freestar, has a 4.2-liter (257 CID) V6 engine that puts out 201 hp at 4,250 rpm, and 263 lb·ft (357 N·m) of torque at 3650 RPM. This is, by far, the most popular Mercury Monterey engine.

The Mountaineer, on the other hand, comes with two Modular engine choices.
1. 4.6-liter (4601 cc, 281 CID) V8, which is offered in 2-valve SOHC, 3-valve SOHC, and 4-valve DOHC versions, and available with iron and aluminum blocks. Rated at 292 horsepower and 315 lb-ft. (396 N·m) of torque.

 

2. 4-liter (4009 cc; 245 CID) V6, in SOHC configuration. Output is 210 hp and 245 lb·ft (332 N·m). This Mercury Mountaineer engine, while smaller in displacement, actually isn't far behind as the 4.6-liter in terms of power output.

Before you go ahead buy your Mercury Monterey engine outright, you'd be wise to ask from people you know and trust. This could save you a lot of time and effort poking here and there.

What's more, the referrals will help ease the hunt for your Mercury Mountaineer engine, which are easy to find in the salvage yards but may be a bit difficult to pick out a good one.

Buying a Mercury Monterey engine from salvage yards is not so different from buying it from an automobile parts store. It's manufactured by Mercury originally, so you can rest assured. The same applies to the Mercury Mountaineer engine.

Do check out the local listings. If you can find a source near your home area, you'll avoid or at least save on the shipping fee. What you want to look for is a certified used engine. Stick to the credible shops and stay away from fraudulent junkyards. It's also always a sound strategy to have the engine inspected by a trusted mechanic or technician before putting your money down.

When you've narrowed down your candidate engine, here are things you want to pay attention to:

* Listen to the engine running; be wary of strong noises. If you detect a knocking sound or tapping noise, it could mean poor maintenance.

* If you spot signs of shoddy repairs, better look for another.

* Check the oil for signs of poor maintenance. But be wise: Relatively clean oil could simply mean it was just changed recently.

* Hunt for leaks. Even a clean and carefully swabbed engine could have leaks. So, don't be shy about getting down to look at the underside of the engine.

When you feel confident about what you've found, ask for a warranty period spanning at least six months. Better still, make that one year. You want peace of mind in the long run, not running to your dealer to give him a long piece of your mind.

cold air intake for SOHC 1994 sl series?

i have a SOHC 1994 sl series base model saturn. no power anything not even steering. i love it except i can't find a damn cold air intake for SOHC engine. anyways my questions are:
1: do you know where i could find a cold air intake for my car
2: how hard and expensive would it be to convert to DOHC
3: what about an engine swap? i have heard that switching from SOHC to DOHC can be really hard. what engine do you suggest (include estimate price value of engine)?

p.s: car has absolutely not added parts to her except the tune up i did this afternoon. platinum spark plugs, 4 new high quality igition wires, high quality oil filter and synthetic oil.

p.s.s: oh and i almost forgot i have throttle body injection (TBI)

dont spend $2000+ switching to DOHC

u dont need an engine swap, just find an intake, change the muffler, tune the ecu chip and u should be fine
