Canadian filmmaker Ron Mann has specialized in making counter-cultural documentaries since 1978, and Tales of the Rat Fink is his masterpiece. Rarely has the combination of technique and subject matter been presented with such symbiotic perfection, and Mann's tribute to Ed "Big Daddy" Roth will appeal to anyone who recalls the glory days of hot rods and custom cars... |

Now that you have your Rat Rod, you want some ideas to set you apart from everyone else. Not just different paint schemes or wheel types. Lets go a bit more in depth in the custom areas.
Airbags - There are many myths to airbags. Too expensive, too much work to put them in, etc. The truth and reality of them is that they have come down in price considerably, and although there is some thought involved, installation is not that bad. Most Rat Rods have straight front axles, so you should leave them be, but the rear ends can be easily changed even if they have leaf or coil springs. You need to make sure that you have at least four links to the rear of your Rat Rod to keep it centered in the wheel well area. And for the most part, the airbag sits in the coil spring perch. Or you have a leaf spring rear, you can easily add one. Plumbing is straightforward. At least if can lower the rear of your Rat Rod and not the front, it will make a tremendous difference in ride and especially stance. Nothing looks better than a parked Rat Rod with it's rear sitting on the ground. Very Cool!
Flames - You've seen them done many times, but what's the right way to do them? You can go easy and weld in a spark plug in your exhaust of your Rat Rod, pump the pedal before you start, almost flooding the motor and then spark it up, wham...big flame, but temporary. Going the propane route, you can run a line into your exhaust and crack open the bottle to control your amount of flame. Be sure to use your brain as your are involving flammables with more flammables. Don't blow up your ride!
Chopping - Roof chops is what makes a Rat Rod. Chopping them off completely is easy. Chopping and taking a couple of inches out involves some thought, and should be done by someone with some metal experience, not to mention you need to know how to weld! Depending on how much you chop out, you will lose visibility, and that in turn means drive-ability. If you are building a Rat Rod to do some bar hopping, then it really doesn't matter. But if your intentions are to do a couple hundred miles a weekend, then strongly consider mild chops.
Take the ideas and run with them. And remember, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Let your imagination determine how cool your Rat Rod really can be.

Choosing The Right Vehicle For Your Rat
What better way to start than picking the right vehicle. In building your Rat Rod, you need to take some things into consideration. Will you drive this vehicle daily? Is it for sunny days only? Do you have a family that does the show circuit with you? The answers to these questions will determine if you will love or hate your vehicle.
Typical Old School Rat Rods Beginning from the start, say about 1915 up to the mid thirties, these are your textbook Rat Rods. Most of them have extreme chops and channeling. The majority of them have very little to no glass and possibly no roofs also. Be it a Ford, Chevy or Chrysler product, they all make good candidates. Chryslers are a bit more rare, and although I"ve never seen a Rolls-Royce rat, i wouldn't be against it. Dont be afraid to out of your boundaries. There is nothing wrong with a pickup cab on a chassis with no bed or nose sheetmetal. BE CREATIVE!
More Car as the years Continue As the thirties came to an end, bigger, fatter fender and bodies came into play. Well into the forties as well, these cars are great chop canditates as well. A bit tougher to execute, the final product is worth it. Again, any of the big three car manufacturers are perfect. Gasser style Rat Rods began to come into play with raised straight axle front ends, big white walls, and motors set back closer to the firewalls than normal. Removing the fenders and sometimes the hood was a popular customization technique.
Fifties: The Lead Sleds Arrive So now the cars keep getting bigger, and heavier. What better way to coin the phrase " Lead Sled ". Be it a 1950 Dodge business coupe, or the icon 50 Merc (Mercury), these vehicles began a complete different way of customization. Continental kits are very popular, as well as long side pipes, big tooth grills, and flames shooting out the exhaust. Very cool! Again, big cars, more work, but a very cool end result. Very popular customization techniques involved removing all chrome and trim, flat black paint, and a choice of flames or scallops painted near the front of the vehicle.
What Happened to the Big Body cars? After the last of the 57 vehicle craze, the style of big and round was lost to square and long. Also big cubic inch motors were in the developmental stages and Muscle Cars were beginning to come around. Most of these vehicles were strictly racing and wanted them shiny. From about 1964 to 1972, just before the oil embargo and insurance craze, most any brand was striving to be number one with style or horsepower. Many famous Muscle Cars came from this era like the 69 Camaro or the infamous 64 1/2 Mustang. There is no such thing as a cool Rat Rod-Muscle Car. It just doesn't work, sorry. Try to keep your Rat Rod pre-1960 to really get noticed. So come visit us at http://www.ratrodauthority.com.
