Judging a Book.

Regarding personal development books, the majority of the time I judge a book not by its cover, but by how much I mark in it after its purchase. If the book I am reading has exceptional content, I heavily mark inside of it with a highlighter or pen. This is especially helpful if I am looking for factual information.

If a book you are reading does not speak to you, or is not helpful, there is nothing to mark. In essence, it is actually screaming, "BORING!" Under your breath you mutter, "Waste of good trees."

A lot of reading material is borrowed from others and rehashed. The author did not internalize it well, meditate, and create from their being something totally unique. "...Of making many books there is no end;" Ecclesiastes 12:12.

Marking a Book

What is the purpose of highlighting or marking a book that you are reading?

When I mark a book, it means the following:

l) Resonating Material. The material speaks to me whether it is in regards to business, self-improvement, or personal enjoyment. Some sort of a transaction is going on.

2) Timely Information. I can use the information now, or in the near future. I mentally catalogue how the information is needed.

3) Inspirational Material. Highlighting means I want the material or information to stand out for immediate reference compared to the rest of the text.

Good books will not only inspire you, but will create new thought patterns of inspiration that help you in your daily life. You can actually meditate on what you have read, and it will create an action in your life, if you allow it to do so.

Notice that if you highlight or mark the material, the same thought patterns that first impressed you will come immediately back to your mind when you revisit the same material. Did you know that you can 'pick up where you left' off regarding what inspires or motivates you if you have highlighted the information?

Creative thought is critical to defining moments in your life.

4) Visualizing with Motor Memory.

Have you ever heard of the term "Motor Memory"? I find that Motor Memory is powerful; it assists me in memorizing material by memorizing its location on a page when I physically mark a book. The actual 'motor memory' motion of marking is a form of memorizing, similarly as is visual or audio memory.

If you really want to enhance memorizing the material you are reading, read the selection you are highlighting out loud for audio memory. You will synch the material by visual, audio and motor memory.

If I have marked or highlighted the book, I will remember where the information is located: "Three quarters of the way through the book, right side, top of the page." Or, "Between pages 50-75, lower left hand side of the page."

Don't forget to be creative; use different highlight colors to refer to different things.

5) Interactive Reading.

Making notations in the book actually helps internalize a book. I can date it, write why I agree or disagree with the author, as well as write what the highlighted material means to me.

Sometimes I will just put a star or an arrow next to important material, or mark it, "Great information," or "Look here." Create a dialogue for yourself.

Some books are meant to be savored, and others devoured.

They say that putting a smile on your face will actually help lift your mood. This is a fact and has been studied by psychiatrists. So I got to thinking, if right handed people use the left side of their brain more and vice versa (which is what I've always heard) would our brains maybe develop on the other side and get more efficient and smarter if we practice improving motor skills on the hand that's not dominant?

A lot of people think that your body and movements are controlled by your brain, but somehow never seem to connect the fact that you can train your brain (thereby making your body stronger). So yes, I believe you can train your left hand, because by working your hand you are also working your brain and strengthening connections. It's really fascinating!
