From large industries to the average homeowner, gasoline powered small engines are widely used to complete major and minor tasks all over the world. Lawn mowers, air compressors and pumps are among the most the popular equipment that utilizes this machinery. They also power ATVs, motorcycles, scooters and certain light aircraft. For household mechanics, knowing the basics of a gasoline powered engine can help better maintain your equipment and help you trouble shoot potential issues that may arise.

What is a Gasoline Powered Small Engine?

These systems are also known as an internal combustion engine. To run these engines, a spark created when the ignition is switched on creates an explosion as it comes into contact with the gasoline in the combustion chamber. Gasoline is a slow burning combustible liquid that becomes explosive when it mixes with air. This explosion is what gives the engine its power. There are a number of parts within these engines that make this entire process work efficiently.

Small Engine Components

1. Fuel System

The fuel system is made up of several other components. The fuel tank stores the gasoline until it enters the carburetor. A fuel pump removes the gasoline through a fuel line into the carburetor. The carburetor then mixes the required volume of air and gas in proper proportion to create the necessary energy. Inside the carburetor, a small filter collects small particles of dirt and sediment that may clog or dirty the fuel.

A primer is used to inject a small amount of extra gasoline into the carburetor to create a higher fuel intensity and stronger spark. This is usually used when weather conditions are cold or the small engine vehicle has been sitting for a long period of time.

2. The Ignition System

Combustion cannot take place if the spark needed to create the condition is not ignited. The ignition produces a high voltage spark that sets off the combustion needed to start the engine. A battery is used to activate this and a spark plug provides the catalyst in which current can flow.

3. The Cylinder Block

Combustion takes place in the cylinder block. Within the combustion chamber, the heat released by the chemical reaction creates a high-pressured gas environment. As this pressure force is pushed to the pistons of the engine, it causes the crankshaft to rotate.

4. The Cooling System

Because of the large amount of pressure and fuel reactions, gasoline small engines produce a large amount of heat. To keep them running efficiently, a cooling system must be in place. These engines are usually cooled using metal fins that push cool air across the system. Bearings are also used to bring down the amount of friction on the engine, thus reducing the amount of heat generated when it is running. Additionally, regular maintenance that includes oiling and cleaning filters will keep the engine heat down and the machine's efficiency up.

There is a lot more that can be learned about the inner workings of a gasoline-powered small engine. However, the basic mechanics of these machines can be broken down to some basic fundamentals in vehicle engine construction. What everyone should remember about small engines is this: Take the time to understand the basic workings of your lawn mower, golf cart, motorcycle, snow mobile or other small engine vehicle so that you can better maintain and prevent breakdowns in the future.

Without a doubt, one of the most expensive repairs a car owner can ever dread to endure is a new engine. As cars age and become more obsolete, such parts become more difficult to find, even when one plunges through a junk yard to pull their own part. Additionally, these parts become more expensive as they become more rare. To alleviate the pain of this problem, many auto owners are turning to less expensive ways of repairing their car and extending its life. One such solution is to rebuild your own engine, which saves on labor costs and you can find most of the parts in junk yards or online.

The biggest challenge for anyone wishing to undertake this process is the oil galleries. Saturn engines are unique in that they were built with no plugs and no access to the oil galleys. The heads can be drilled and tapped however, to overcome this obstacle; this project is not for the casual engine lover.

The Saturn engine itself is very rebuild-able as long as it is thoroughly cleaned. Some parts may be dealer only, however, there are over a million Saturn vehicles on the roads, so aftermarket parts are becoming more and more available, and cheaper at that.

Cast iron sleeves are supposed to press fit in the Saturn engine block with a .001 inch to .003 inch interference. Saturn suggests users remove them by heating the block to 350 degrees, but some users have noted that they fall out at closer to 200. Liquid nitrogen is the suggested method for installing new sleeves.

The Saturn engine cranks feature rolled radius the mains as well as the rods. Saturn recommends grinding engine cranks no more than 0.25mm under-size, but some users suggest that you can grind them down to 0.50mm. Just be careful that you do not grind out the rolled radius.

Saturn engines use cast-iron main caps on their aluminum block. Therefore, align honing means you need special stones, and a different approach than you might be used to. Removing too much material from the block can mean the mains will end up being the wrong size and out of round.

The Saturn engine rods need to be reconditioned; at the same time, replace the pin bushings. Some bushings may show signs of abnormal wear caused by factory defects. Therefore, it is a very important step to make sure they are replaced.

The next step in rebuilding your Saturn engine is to inspect the front of the engine block carefully for damage which could be caused by a loose timing chain. If the oil has not been changed frequently enough, there could be a plug in the relief hole of the tensioner, which exerts too much pressure on the chain. As a result, the chain gets more sloppy, which chews away on the surfaces of the engine block. Therefore a good rule of thumb is to replace all the tensioners and repair some damaged blocks.

Consult the internet and Saturn often for more tips. These engines can be rebuilt for a reasonable price and a decent amount of labor.

About how much would a truck like this be worth?

a nice 1972 c-10. it has a original 402ci big block. its pretty much a 396 but with a bigger stroke. the engine has been freshly rebuilt about a year and half ago where i replaced the cam, air manifold, crank and rod bearings, arp bolt kit,new gaskets, and balanced. oginaly the engine dynoed at 375 horse but after rebuilt it engine dynoed a lil over 415 horse. the cam specs-280 duration at .529 lift. got a 350 turbo trans, open end rear(still does a mean burnout).needs new ball joints oh front end and new idler arm. just repainted about 4 months ago. the new color is a honda color used on the 99-00 si supplied by dupount. its a beautiful dark pearl blue. runs strong.
