You don't have to be a car mechanic to recognize that a good performing water pump is the chief key to the survival of your car's engine. Noisy, loose, wobbly, and shaft leaks indicate that water pump replacement is necessary. Note that similar problems can affect the fan clutches, thus you should perform replacement to maintain operating temperatures under control and inhibit boiling fluids from leaking through cylinder head gaskets.
In most cars, you will discover the pump installed on the front of the engine, together with a drive pulley appended to the pump hub. If very tight, you will see the fan clutch installed to the pulley together with bolts in its flange. These specifically cover cars with traditional or conventional engines. If you have a front-wheel-drive, you might find yourself in a puzzling position since the engine is normally mounted sideways resulting to trickier belt access and at times needs removal of the timing chain initially. If this is your case, you should analyze your level of expertise. If you lack the knowledge, it's best to get the services of a professional mechanic to perform the pump replacement.
Start the job by disengaging the negative cable of the battery, drain the coolant, and then take the hoses and belt away to unbolt the fan and shroud if applicable. Get the pulley. Unfasten the existing water pump. Cleanse the gasket segment with a solvent or a scraper. Utilize gasket sealant if replacement guidelines specify.
Place and secure the new pump as well as gasket per the instruction manual. To bring all the parts back after accomplishing the water pump replacement, you just need to reverse the disassembly process, locked the belt to its appropriate tension, and then fill the recommended amount of water and coolant mixture in the radiator. Start your engine and look for squeaks and leaks. If you don't find any, you're surely good to go!

What is an AC Drive?
AC Drives are also known as Inverters, Variable Speed Drives (VSDs), Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) and Frequency Converters. AC Drives are used to control AC Induction motors; the most common motor technology used in industry. The motors are rugged, require very little maintenance and can easily be manufactured with high environmental protection.
If an AC motor is connected directly to the mains supply the motor will accelerate quickly and then rotate at a fixed speed which is dependant upon the electrical supply frequency and the motor design. For some applications fixed speed is acceptable and, by carefully selecting gearbox ratios, a desired final output speed can be achieved. However, for most applications, hard acceleration, unbraked deceleration and the inability to vary the speed and torque represent a serious problem. AC Drives provide a solution by modifying the voltage and frequency of the AC supply to the motor. Control is achieved by either estimating the motor speed, known as open loop control, or by measuring the speed, known as closed loop control. Both techniques have advantages and disadvantages:
Open Loop Control
Open loop control provides the simplest means of controlling AC induction motors, as the speed of the motor is dependant upon the frequency of the supply, a basic means of control is simply to vary the voltage and frequency to achieve the desired motor speed. This method is known as V/Hz control. The major disadvantages of this method of control are poor precision and poor low speed torque.
A huge amount of research has been undertaken to improve the open loop performance of AC Drives. Open Loop Vector and Direct Torque Control technologies attempt to model the motor in real time to compensate for a wide range of factors that affect the speed and torque delivered at the output shaft. The result of these methods is a large performance and accuracy improvement, however, at low speed performance may still be a problem. Rotor Flux Control (RFC) is a new method of control for open loop drives which offers improved stability and greater dynamic performance.
Open loop drives are used where the motor is never required to hold a load at zero or low speed, and where the torque and speed accuracy are not important, typical applications include:
- Pumps
- Fans
- Conveyors
- Mixers
- Centrifuges
Closed Loop Control
Closed loop control is achieved by using a speed and position sensor connected to the motor shaft.
The result is stable, accurate, dynamic speed and torque control from standstill through to maximum speed. Typical application include:
- Cranes and hoists
- Lifts
- Winding
- Material handling
- Automotive testing
- Extruding
Intelligent Drives
Emerson Group's Control Techniques is the market leader in intelligent drives; this refers to drives that have programmable automation or motion controllers within the product as standard or as an option. Intelligent drives offer significant advantages; because the controller is located within the drive itself, communication delays are eliminated therefore improving performance in automation and motion applications and removing the need for external controllers, saving panel space. Unidrive SP, Commander SK, Digitax ST and Mentor II are all considered to be intelligent.
Energy Saving
It is estimated that energy saving of up to 20% can be achieved through installing and operating motors in a more efficient way. Installing AC drives in certain applications such as fans and pumps can have a dramatic effect on the energy consumed. With motors consuming an estimated two thirds of electrical energy within industry, drives must form a key part of any programme to reduce carbon emissions.

Drive shaft problem with 80's Evinrude 8 hp outboard.?
I have recently removed the lower unit of my evinrude outboard to change the water-pump impeller and I am having problems reinstalling the impeller and pump housing. I'm having a problem placing the impeller key to the correct position to the drive shaft so I can bolt down the pump housing. All of the instructions that I have seen on outboards show the drive shaft coming down with the lower unit and the impeller slides down the shaft with the key in place. My dilemma is that the drive shaft is still in its intended position with the splines exposed and there doesn't appear to be any way for me to slide the impeller up the shaft to finish the install. My question is if there is a way to install the impeller without removing the drive shaft?
OOPS! The drive shaft should have remained in the lower-unit. It inserts into the pinion gear and you should have been looking at the water pump housing with the drive shaft sticking out of it. There should also be a brass tube that is still in the lower leg and a shift rod that comes out of the lower unit.
If the pinion has moved out of position you may need to pull the bearing carrier and rev. gear to get it back where it should be. Then no splines will be exposed on the bottom end of the shaft.
