Every five or six months, many of us suddenly realize it's time for an oil change and hurry off to the closest lube shop, or perhaps we'll try that new place that's running the $19.99 oil change special. Or, perhaps you stick with one mechanic because he uses Pennzoil because that's what good old dad always said to use. Then, in addition to all the choices we're faced with, now the garages are pushing us to make yet another - synthetic oil or standard oil.

What's the difference? Does it really matter? "Synthetic" - that sounds like "fake" - but yet they are charging twice as much for the "fake" stuff... Just change the oil already! Who cares!

Who cares? You should. Quality and timely oil changes are the single most important factor in protecting your car's longevity and reliability - and therefore your pocketbook. Choosing an oil change simply by price and convenience is much like hitting the drive through for a Big Mac Meal Deal - it's quick, satisfying, and cheap (relatively) - and you're on your way again. Yes, your car is getting a shot of clean oil and a new filter, but will that new oil hold up to the stress that every day use puts on your engine - for the next six months? Could you live on Big Macs for six months? Do you think your body might rebel?

Just like choosing a better-balanced, healthier meal, choosing quality automotive oil takes a little more planning and knowledge. First, read your car's owner's manual. If it tells you to use only synthetic oil, the decision is made for you. If the manufacture recommends synthetic oil, it is because the car's engine has been precision engineered to require those uniform molecules and standard mineral oil can result in problems. Many cars, however, won't be so specific, so you will need to do a little more homework.

First, it is important to understand what oil does for your engine. Oil allows the moving parts within your engine to slide together without creating dangerous friction that causes unnecessary wear and overheating. Traditional motor oils are made from the distillation and refining of mineral crude oil stock, while synthetic oils rearrange these mineral oil molecules into a new product with molecules of a more uniform size and shape and combines them with performance additives that fight off sludge and mineral deposits. This allows the synthetic oil to withstand extreme temperatures and stay clean longer. Most engine wear occurs during start-up and then again at very high temperatures. Therefore, the synthetic oil offers greater protection at both ends of the spectrum. Also, because the synthetic oil resists sludge and mineral breakdown, the length of time between oil changes can be increased dramatically.

Second, one should consider what they expect from their engine oil. If an oil change is all about simply keeping your old clunker on the road for a couple more years, standard oil is probably sufficient. Likewise, if you have just purchased a brand new car and are still in the engine break-in stage (under 5,000 miles), a standard oil is preferable. However, if you are looking to drastically increase the life of your engine, wait longer between oil changes, operate your vehicle in extreme hot or cold temperatures, or get that extra five or ten horsepower out of your car, synthetic oil is the way to go.

Synthetic oil is undeniably a far superior alternative for most of us. Yes, the oil change generally costs twice as much up front, but that oil will last at least two or three times longer, saving money in the long run. In addition to the short-term cost savings, your car will thank you for the enhanced protection and will reward you with a longer life, increased power, and reduced maintenance costs.

'Brakeing' Down My Life

Forget Ambrosia. Chaos is the real soul food of the Gods. I left my work as a "shrink" and emerged a healer with the help of a BMW, Mazda Rx7, a Subaru, and a very massively grey Mac truck. I never thought of myself as particularly accident-prone until I incurred three car accidents over what I have come to refer to as my own six - day war in June.

Like so many Yuppies of my generation, my career was not based upon a genuine calling or feeling a sense of purpose. It was something I could do with my eyes closed and make good money at, but a part of me knew my Freudian training, however lucrative, didn't really cure my patients and it gnawed at me constantly. Three years passed and boredom set in. Of course, if I had been paying attention I would have recognized the signs. Boredom is, after all, a transition emotion. You either go up the emotional tone scale and take action or you go down it and become depressed. I chose the latter.

I was terrified to change my life. I didn't believe I was capable of doing anything else. So, to hide from myself I became a shopaholic until one day my soul decided to put on the brakes, literally. As I was pulling out of one of my favorite malls traffic stopped suddenly, I put "pedal to the metal" and was slammed into by a brand new, black Mazda. All I could think about was my red "beemer", totally unconscious of the fact that I had sustained a whiplash and a concussion. Yet, I still didn't hear the call, the voice that was whispering to me inside. Two days later while driving a rental car, these brakes went out completely, only now I had graduated to an eight-lane freeway event and my car went spinning like a teacup at Disneyland until I was facing Friday night traffic. Terrified, I cried out, "Somebody up there must really want me to stick around". Miraculously, like a parting of the red sea, a pathway opened across four lanes for me to pass to the roadside. And yet, I still did not hear the call!

Submerged in denial, I decided to stop driving while my family was visiting and appointed my brother the chauffeur. I placed myself in the middle of the back seat between my godmother and my mother. Now I would be safe. And.... we were rear ended by a Mac truck. And that was the day my whole world unraveled.

Within six months, I left everything that was known to me: my marriage, my career, my home, and even my Yuppie car for a city I didn't even like. But now, for the first time in my life, I not only could hear the voice, but I learned to follow directions! I vowed I would not come back to psychotherapy until I was no longer a "psycho" therapist. I journeyed to Peru in search of a new technique that would heal people quickly. With the help of two powerful women, one a shaman and the other an enlightened master, I found something much greater than a quick fix. I found my heart and with it the deep understanding that the only thing that really heals is love.

Now when I speak before audiences or coach people individually, I trust that the words are a small part of the message. My job each time is to be a conduit for love. In those moments, my heart feels the deepest gratitude for the chaos that became the soul food that drove me here.

Sudden loss of power in my car... what could it be?

I have a 83 Subaru GL and it's a push button start. I installed a new button the other day because the old one kept getting stuck which caused me to burn on the starter. That's all fixed now, but now when I turn the key, (sometimes) nothing happens. Usually the lights on the dashboard will come on, but there's nothing. When I first put the key in, the lights come on, but as soon as I'm about to hit the button, there's a subtle click noise and everything shuts off. This happened yesterday when I was leaving work, and after waiting about 20 minutes I tried again and it started right up. It happened again last night and I tried it this morning and once again, complete power loss. I don't think it could be the battery 'cause then it would happen all the time. I'm not sure if it could be a bad alternator or a shortage in a wire somewhere. Help me out. I need to fix this today 'cause it's my day off and I need a way to get to work tomorrow! Thanks!

Sounds like a loose ground. If you had a short, it would likely blow a fuse. But if it works sometimes and other times it doesn't, it it more likely a loose ground.
