Some simple tips to keep your Washing Machine clean and smelling fresh. This will get your clothes cleaner and even save on running costs. As an Appliance Engineer, some of the most common problems I see these days are smelly and gunged up Washing Machines. Most of us run our washing machines on quite cool cycles these days. No doubt this saves on electricity used and may even help in the bigger picture of reducing carbon emissions, but if it is causing machines to break down sooner. Then maybe we are not really saving anything at all.

Buying a new machine every 2 years is nowhere near as environmentally friendly as having it last for 10, 15 or even 20 years. 20 years or more ago it was normal to run a machine on a boil wash once or twice a week. The great advantage to doing this is that the really hot water washes away all the grease and gunge at the same time as cleaning the clothes. Modern clothes tend not to do so well at high temperatures and detergent manufacturers are telling us that we should be washing our clothes on cooler settings.

So what's the problem? Low temperature washes don't kill bacteria and germs and low temperature washes can cause washing machines to gunge up with layers of soft soap and chemicals. This means many people have washing machines that smell really bad and are no where near as efficient as they could be. Just look at the detergent compartment of your washing machine, most likely it is gunged up and turning black. Or check out the rubber door seal, same thing. Is there a smell from your freshly washed and dried laundry? Is there a bad smell when you open the door of the washing machine?

Some years back I went through a period of putting on a nice clean shirt, only to take it off again in a minute or two because it smelled of damp. This was a freshly laundered and ironed shirt and it really annoyed me. So I set about finding out why. First, I blamed the Iron, so I descaled it, that made no difference. Then I thought it might be that I was buying cheap shirts, but I checked and that wasn't it either. You would think that being a washing machine engineer, I would have solved the problem easily, but it took me quite a while. Just about the last thing I thought to check was the washing machine, but when I opened the door of my machine and had a sniff, I knew I had found the problem. It was very smelly and needed further investigation.

I disconnected my machine and took it into my workshop where I took it apart. This was about 10 years ago and at that time I had been repairing washing machines for some 20 years. It was the first time however, that I saw a definite build up of sticky gunge in a washing machine. All of the parts of my machine that were in contact with water, were coated with a slimy, smelly layer of what looked like old soap and it smelled bad. It was just like someone had covered everything with old wet soap. A couple of things had recently happened in my home. We had changed to liquid detergent and as recommended, we had also stopped running hot wash cycles. I also think more fabric softener was being used as well, to try to combat the bad smells.

I cleaned all the parts as best I could and built my machine up again. I wasn't about to dump a perfectly good washing machine, So I decided to find an answer to the problem. I have nothing against liquid detergents, but in my experience they can leave a residue behind them on low temperature washes, which just builds up over time. It seems to leave a wet layer inside a machine which gives off a bad smell of damp.

So I use soap powder or tablets now. I use half the recommended amount. I have replaced my fabric softener with white vinegar. (Liquid fabric softener is similar to liquid detergent in that it too leaves a slimy residue in a machine over time). I have simply replaced the amount of liquid fabric softener with the same amount of white or distilled vinegar. It goes into the softener compartment in the detergent drawer, just as the fabric softener used to. It is almost impossible to put too much in as the vinegar is descaling the machine as well.

The clothes are just as soft, but they don't smell of vinegar at all and I know it is doing my machine good and descaling it. One of the extra benefits as well is, no money wasted on expensive descaling tablets. Once a week I make sure the machine is run on a hot cycle. Either empty or to wash towels and bed clothes (to kill bugs, mites and bacteria, you either need heat or anti-bacterial detergent). The problem of smelly clothes and bad odours from my washing machine is now solved.

To recap.

I use only washing powder or tablets now. I use half the amount recommended on the packet. I have replaced liquid fabric conditioners/softeners with white (distilled or clear) vinegar. I use anywhere between a half and 1 cupful of vinegar per wash. I run a hot cycle every week.

My machine stays clean, it is more efficient than it would be with all that horrible sludge coating the inside.

How To Correctly Install Bathtub Inserts

Bath tub inserts enable a user to have an easier time while taking a bath. This is especially useful for young children and the very old. It is very handy for disabled persons too. Tub inserts are usually easy to install with just a minimal number of bolts used and does not require any need to modify the tub.

What to look for in a bath tub insert

Choose bath tub inserts that are made from gel coat and is reinforced by fiberglass materials, can be installed by a single person without any fuss and without changing anything on the existing tub, exhibits a non-slip surface which is also soft and pliable for the user's comfort, and a reasonable warranty which normally lasts from a year up to three years.

Instructions on installing the tub insert

1. First, check the tub insert kit if all the necessary components are present. Look at the tub's bottom to ascertain that its drain gasket is in place.

2. Cleaned the whole bath tub assembly, including the shower unit with the use of a non-abrasive cleaning agent. After cleaning, make sure that the whole thing is dry before continuing the installation process. This is important since any moisture left may cause damage to the floor.

3. Fit the insert to find it if it fits properly. After testing if the insert fits, remove the insert. Apply silicone caulking to the shower drain's upper part as well as the tub bottom's gasket. Make sure that the bead of silicone which encircles the drain brass is at least half an inch.

4. With utmost care, gently place the tub insert on the shower unit by sliding it into place. Apply ample pressure to aid in setting the insert. Fill the tub with water, the water's weight will help in putting the insert in place while the silicone is setting.

5. When the silicone has cured, it is time to drain the water. After draining, clean the tub and the insert using a mild cleaning agent as well as warm water. It is a strict no-no to use liquid abrasives or even scouring powder. Congratulations, you may now use your new bath tub!

Cleaning and maintenance

Again, it is important to keep in mind that you should not employ abrasive cleaners. This is because abrasive cleaners have the potential to scratch as well as dull the unit's surface. It is advisable to use liquid detergents like Mr. Clean, Ajax, or Top Job. These cleaning agents that have been mentioned may be used for daily cleaning of the tub. Never use sa metal scraper, steel wool, or wire brushes because these tools can easily damage the whole setup. Periodically, you can scrub any mineral deposits or soap stains using gel gloss or even a dishwashing detergent. Waxing it periodically with a liquid wax can improve the luster and finish of the tub and insert.

If your bath is in any way damaged, you can easily have it repaired. Contact the nearest service center and ask for a professional repairman. If ever the services of a repairman is not available in your area, you can always contact the manufacturer of your bath tub insert as well as that of the tub itself. Repair kits can also be bought from the manufacturers or from do it yourself shops. Repair kits usually include a gel coat.

These are some of the pointers that you must consider when getting a tub insert as well as installing it. Instructions on cleaning and maintaining the whole setup is also included to add years to your bathroom components.
