One obnoxious sound is a rattling noise caused by a loose or vibrating component.
A similar problem is excessive or worn clearances between two moving parts, such as a connecting rod bearings.
Ticking noises or tapping noises as a rule can be linked with a problem in the engine's valve train vicinity.
Since the pressure of the top end or valve train, is less than the pressure of the lower engine components, light sounds of ticking or tapping are usually produced.
If the problem happens to be in the valve train, the ticking or tapping noise would be heard at a speed that's slower than the engine speed. The explanation for this is that the camshaft rotates at one-half of the engine speed. Therefore the speed of the tapping noise will be slower if there is a problem with only one valve.
Broken valve springs, incorrectly adjusted valve clearances, worn or defective valve lifters, or worn camshaft lobes are the most recognizable troubles associated with tapping or ticking noises.
Knocking noises are most generally louder than tapping or ticking noises and can usually be very recognizable in the lower part of the engine.
A knocking noise in the connecting-rod bearing area is very common.
Lack of oil pressure at the bearings can cause bearing wear, that in return, creates excessive clearance between the crankshaft journal and bearings.
During normal operation, oil that is fed up to the bearings reduces the amount of friction between the metal crankshaft journals and bearing surface, acting like a cushion. The oil gets stuck among these surfaces, creating a film of oil that the crankshaft journal floats on.
Nonetheless, the protective oil film cannot be developed if an inadequate amount of oil is delivered to these areas, or if the bearings are so worn and the clearances so huge that the
Oil basically flows out of the area as fast as it enters.
In either case, the crankshaft journal starts to make contact with the bearing surface as the engine rotates and produces a knocking noise.
At the same time the engine is placed under a higher load, such as during acceleration, the noise will get louder for the reason that there is additional pressure on these areas.
Noise that is originating from the crankshaft area, will take place at the equivalent speed that the engine is operating at.
A mechanics stethoscope is a great tool for locating noises within a vehicle, much like a Dr.'s stethoscope, you can hear everything with accuracy!
These can be purchased just about anywhere mechanic tools are sold ( they are inexpensive)and I highly recommend one if you do your own diagnosing!

I have a broken rod on my riding lawnmower?
I have a B&S 18HP Twin riding lawnmower. I pulled my boat out of the garage with it and something snapped,I pulled the engine cover and the oneside piston goes back and forth but the other doesn't. So I think a connecting rod is broken. How do I get to that to repair that or is it worthed?
You have to completely tear the engine in half. Since you are asking I don't believe you have the skills to do it. Probably banged around and tore itself up inside anyway. probably toast. Easiest thing to do would be get another engine or trade out the mower if old and not worth it. I had one like this running good then found out one side was cold to touch with this very problem.

Benjamin Hochman of The Denver Post: "How should Denver fans react to Carmelo Anthony, who has transformed the franchise into a winner over the past eight seasons but now wants out? Many fans, in fact, most fans, still cheer for him. But the boobirds are out. Told of the booing, Lakers superstar Kobe Bryant said Thursday, 'That's stupid.' Wait, Kobe. What about Denver-born, Denver-raised fans ...
