You may know how the hydraulics on your truck crane work, and you may take your equipment in for regular maintenance, but if your service provider doesn't run a clean shop you could be unknowingly damaging your hydraulic systems.
According to an article in Machinery Lubrication Magazine ("Are Repair Shops Contaminating Hydraulic Components?", September 2007), the risks are present in many repair shops.
Particles and moisture are the main culprits, and they can enter the servicing process at many different points.
How Hydraulics Work
If you use any kind of truck mounted crane, you will know how the hydraulics work. A hydraulic pump places downward force on one piston, which transmits force to a second piston. The force is transmitted through an incompressible liquid - usually oil. The efficiency and smoothness of operation that hydraulic systems are known for depend on clean oil.
If dirty oil, dust or debris enters your hydraulic components during repair or servicing, the longevity and performance of those components may be affected.
Evaluating Your Repair Facility
The article in Machinery Lubrication discussed the things you should look for in a good repair facility. Here is a brief summary:
- Look for signs that the shop is clean and organized. Any sign of disarray may indicate that work is not done to your standards.
- The workbenches where repairs are done should be far from tools that throw off lots of dust and debris, like lathes, sandblasters, grinders, welders and torches.
- Clay-based absorbents, used to keep floors dry, can also generate lots of dust. A shop should use absorbent pads to take care of spills.
- Solvent tanks are used to clean parts. Check that the kind of solvent used is compatible with the seals on your equipment. Also, verify that the solvent tank is filtered and cleaned regularly to ensure that dust and debris do not get onto the equipment being cleaned.
- Compressed air is used throughout a repair shop, but it can blow lots of dust around. The shop should use an air source that is filtered, dried and lubricated.
- Dust and debris can get stuck in the grease used for lubrication if the grease is left open. Take a look around to see how tidy the lubrication area is and check for open lubricants.
- Seals are vital to proper functioning of your equipment. Old seals can dry out or crack. Be sure that seals are stored properly in sealed bags.
- The testing area is a potential hazard to your equipment if the oil used in testing is not compatible with yours or if it is not clean. Ensure that the shop is using compatible oil in its testing processes and that regular filtration of the testing oil takes place.
Because the potential for contamination is so great, it is worth the time to inspect a repair shop before sending parts for servicing there.

Not the fault of the manufacturer, but when I box all four wheels on steel jack wore received through the soil until they were literally bites out! Unfortunately, I think that during the harsh treatment of nipple that fits into the oil reservoir to fill this hole was lost due to my connection does not work at all when I received him. I was able to figure out why it does not work, so I called customer service Torin ... After about 45 minutes (!) On the phone with them to identify the rubber nipple was missing, and he sent me a refund.
Unfortunately, as already mentioned, the oil level is low jack, a trip to the store for car parts, hydraulic jack fluid necessary for the installation of replacement nipple.
After filling the oil tank and replace the pump nipple it acts as an advertisement, albeit slowly growing. It takes about 20 pumps to achieve full height, though it is very solid in the up / down process.
Others mentioned the lack of aesthetics and it's not a lie. It is true that it is a floor jack and not for beauty. This means that it definitely is not a "beautiful woman" with a sloppy (but strong) welding, chips in the paint, so I was looking to buy, I bought it because it is one of the highest connectivity available <$ 100US.

Good Jack for Heavy Trucks--Could Use a Handle
This is a good jack for the money. I used to to install a lift kit on a Jeep Wrangler and it served well. As a previous reviewer noted, the top extension is removable--helpful when you're lifting at different points for different purposes. The jack is sturdy and seems well made where it counts. The fit and finish is only okay--lots of rough spots in the paint and it rattles around a lot. None of that matters in functional terms, but you won't impress your buddies with this thing. It does the job and does it well and that's it. I docked it one star because it lacks any kind of handle for pulling it around the garage. I have other--lighter duty--jacks that have handles and they're useful. This is a heavy jack. It could use a handle.
Torin 3 Ton Jack
This jack lifts my Chevy Silverado without any trouble. I like the fact it has the extention to take up the hight. If you do your own maintance you need this jack.
3 Ton SUV floor jack
Before I could use this jack I checked the oil level which turned out to be low. That meant a trip to the auto parts store for hydraulic jack oil and a very, very small funnel. The instructions included with the jack were vague resulting in a call to their customer service. I tried several emails which went unanswered.
Once I got past the low oil problem I tried the jack out twice rotating the tires on both of my trucks. The jack was easy to use and made the job much, much easier than using the type of jack that came with the trucks.
The literature doesn't mention it but the long neck piece is easily removed if you want to use the jack for low clearance situations.
The jack seems like a good value for the price and lifted my Sierra 1/2 ton pickup with ease.
I would rate the jack highly but I'm not impressed with the customer service from the manufacturer or the user's manual that came with the jack.

Repairs on a 2001 VW Passat Wagon?
I have a 01 VW Passat wagon... 72000 miles. The car was surging and idling rough so we took the car in. The dealership had if for 1.5 months. The car was suppose to still be covered under warranty so they put in a new turbo engine, new turbo feed line, New oil pump pickup, new cam chain tensoner, tooth belt, roller, beltdamper, water pump, thermostat and coolant was added. A week after picking up our "fixed" car, the check engine light came on. Now mind you we just spent $1200 to fix it. Now the dealership is saying we need to fork over another $950 for more maintenance... my question is wouldn't they have realized that this work needed to be done when they had the car the week prior, we only drove the car at the most 200 miles over that week period. They started to say we needed 4 spark plugs and a coolant temperature switch and something else... anyone help! Thanks
their ripping you off i would kick some ass
