How do you touch up a piece of furniture with stain?
My husband and I are trying to touch up our daughter's crib for our new baby girl that is due at the end of June. The crib is oak and our first daughter chewed on the railing (the 'headboard' part, not the part that had the plastic covering). She really managed to make it look pretty bad, and we attempted to cover it but she always manage to take off the covering. The crib was loaned to us from an Aunt and we want to touch it up and by crib covers for this baby so this doesn't happen again. So far my husband sanded the chewed spots with 220 sandpaper and attempted to apply a golden oak stain, but it's just not looking very good. Any ideas? Thanks
We were planning on putting a baby safe clear coating over the stain so there wouldn't be any issues with the stain making the baby sick...AND we were putting up some type of railing protectors I saw online over the rails anyway...just wanted to add that from reading the first comment!
Wait for the stain to completely dry, then use a rougher sandpaper and sand it down until its completely smooth. After you got it smooth, then move to a finer sandpaper. Then buy a stain that matches, and after the first coat completely drys see if it needs another coat. Also, you may want to consider varnishing it to keep the baby from being able to put his/her mouth on the stain. Varnish is a basically a clear coat that protects wood, you may want to do it in a garage because it smells strong and make sure that nothing touches the varnish coating while its drying, and I mean nothing!
If it was me I would redo the whole crib to make it look nice, opposed to only refinishing the headboard. But thats just me.
