Remodeling a bathroom is a significant expense, and one that you only want to do once. Never is this more true as it relates to shower enclosures. Properly done, your new shower will provide years of enjoyment and comfort. It is important to understand the proper way to construct a shower. Even if you hire a contractor to perform this work, you will be able to sleep better at night knowing that your shower was installed correctly.
Traditionally, shower floors are constructed by first installing a rubber pan liner and mortar bed. The finished tile is installed over the mortar bed. Virtually every shower we have seen that was constructed using this technique leaked water. This is a bad situation, as water promotes the growth of mold and mildew and has the potential for rotting wood which provides a home for nasty things like termites.
Another common problem are shower curbs that leak water. It's easy to understand why if you know how they are built. If you cover wood with a rubber membrane, and then attach the membrane with nails, each nail hole is an opportunity for water to penetrate and cause damage.
Shower walls do not fair much better. Most shower walls are constructed using greenboard or cement board as a backing. To make matters worse, drywall screws or standard nails are used to fasten the wall backing instead of stainless steel screws which are rust-proof. Tile grout is not impervious to water infiltration. Over time, grout can crack and allow water to get behind or underneath the tile. This will cause deteriation of whatever tile backing was used.
And last but not least, many showers have recessed nooks for things like soap or shampoo bottles. They are a common source of water problems in showers because they are hard to waterproof.
Installation of a vent fan in your shower is a very good idea, as this will eliminate the excess humidity that gets generated from taking a hot shower. Many vent fan units incorporate a light as well.
Prior to installing your new shower, you should inspect the framing for any existing water damage and repair as necessary. Minor mildew or mold can be cleaned with bleach.
Wood that has rotted should be replaced. Using a straight edge, check the wall stubs for any bowed studs. If you find any, replace the stud.
If your shower will incorporate nooks, then purchase one of the size that fits your needs and install it into the framing cavity.
Installation of a vapor barrier is very important and something that many contractors will forgoe. Run a thin bead of construction glue on each stud and wall plate. Using 6 mil plastic, attach the sheet to the wall studs. Be sure to seal the top and bottom of the vapor barrier to the upper and lower wall plates with duct tape. The vapor barrier prevents condensation from forming between your walls.
Fortunately, there is a way to build a leakproof shower that will last forever. Schluter Systems is a company that provides an engineered solution to creating shower enclosures. They manufacture a shower kit that contains everything you need to create a waterproof shower enclosure. A waterproof composite floor pan with an integrated drain is used to create the shower floor. The floor pan is pre-sloped ensuring that after your shower, any remaining water flows to the drain and leaves your shower floor dry. The shower curb is also constructed with a composite curb.
Install cement board on the shower walls (using stainless steel screws) and then attach the waterprof membrane using a 1/4" trowel and thinset.
The shower floor tile should be installed first. It is a good idea to use a tile between 4-6" square on the shower floor. Using a smaller tile means more grout lines and therefore more potential for water to get through the grout. A larger tile will not conform to the slope of the floor. The tile should be installed with thinset mortar. Do not use Mastic adhesive in your shower.
Install the shower wall tile next. Your tile supply house sells a product called grout-caulk. This should be used wherever the shower walls join (the corners) and where the shower walls meet a horizontal surface (the floor, the ceiling, the shower bench). Houses do shift slightly over time, and grout caulk will not crack due to minor movement.
Finally, grout your tile using a sanded grout. Be sure to use a tile sealer over all tile surfaces after grouting.

Kitchen Organizers Every Home Cook Should Have
If you find yourself shuffling aimlessly through drawers full of mismatched spatulas, egg slicers and garlic presses in search of a whisk, you may have a problem greater than a botched soufflé. Fortunately, with thousands of fantastic kitchen organizers just a few mouse clicks away, there is hope for even the most clutter-prone and messy of home chefs. Here are some great products to extract the mess from your mess kit.
Under Sink Sliding Drawers
One of the most clutter-prone areas of any kitchen lies directly beneath the sink. Cut through a sea of half-empty years-old cleaning products, sponges and other supplies with a set of under sink sliding drawers. Featuring wire compartments specially sized to wrangle all your supplies, these simple yet effective drawers will keep all your products in order and save you the trouble of digging through the whole cabinet to find what you need.
Slim Slide Out Pantry
The clever kitchen organizer makes use of even the smallest spaces and a slide out slim pantry is the perfect opportunity to do so. Built to fit into some tight spots such as the space between your refrigerator and your cabinets, the slim slide out pantry is a great place to store canned goods, dry goods and more.
Under Shelf Rack
If you find yourself struggling to find a home for small items like boxes of sandwich baggies or saran wrap, an under shelf rack is the perfect solution. Able to slide onto just about any shelf, these racks create a new storage area for items that just do not fit in. For larger spaces, multiple racks can be combined to create a whole new section of shelving with no tools in seconds.
Spice Stack and Spice Clip Set
Adventurous cooks have a knack for accumulating healthy collections of exotic spices and those spices have a knack for taking up space. If you have been dealing with a sea of aromatic powders and flakes, a spice stack can save you lots of space and time. With separated compartments just the right size to accept most spices, the spice stack stores your favorite flavors on their sides in handy pull-out drawers.
The Spice Clip Set alternatively keeps all your spices in plain view, each attached to the back of any cupboard door with handy clips. You will never need to forgo the flavor in any experimental dishes again with such a well-arranged arsenal.
Adjustable Door Rack
Do not let any nooks or crannies go to waste in your quest to organize your kitchen. Another prime yet discreet spot for expanding your storage capacity is behind a closet or basement door with an adjustable door rack. With the capacity to hold shelf after shelf of canned, boxed and other items, these versatile racks slip quickly over any door top to extend your pantry instantly.
Pan Tree and Pot Lid Holder
One of the most commonly troubled areas of any kitchen is the pot and pan cupboard. If clanging through a pile of jumbled pots and pans of all sizes and types in search of just the right pot is a part of your pre-dinner ritual, you may consider the pan tree a lifesaver. Made of durable plastic, the pan tree can fit into most cabinets and can accommodate 14 pieces of cookware on its convenient hooks and racks.
Once your pots and pans have found their proper homes, it is only fitting to give their respective lids a well-arranged place to call their own. A good pot lid holder can install easily on the back of your pot and pan cupboard door and keeps all your lids right where you need them in thoughtful bins.
Shelf Pot Rack
Another great storage solution for errant pots and pans employs vertical space. A shelf pot rack doubles as a small shelf and a place to hang cookware so that your favorite pans will always be on display and within reach. Shelf pot racks come in many sizes to match your needs and install quickly directly into drywall without requiring a stud.
Stackable Recycling Bins
When space is limited in the kitchen, every little bit helps. One indispensible space hog in the kitchen that could benefit from a little intelligent design is the recycle bin. Stackable recycling bins, however, make it possible to banish that ugly municipal recycling to the garage permanently. Featuring a sleek, odor reducing design and color-coded labels, you can stack as many bins as you need to separate all your recyclables before trash day.
With a few thoughtful and innovative organizers and gadgets, you’ll be ready for any culinary occasion at a moment’s notice, and best of all, with no mess! So, get your mouse to clicking and straighten up your kitchen today!

Securing a Maax shower base?
I have a cheap Maax shower kit. It doesnt exactly say how to secure the base or shower pan. Its made of plastic. Im not tiling or using concrete. Im securing it on our plywood floors in my renovated bathroom. Do I screw it to the studs? Do I need to glue it to the floor? Its shimmed and some area's are filled underneath with roofers felt. Its nice and even but before I continue I need to know what Maax demands are for securing it. Did you install Maax product with good results? I have to wait till Monday to contact them and I want the job done Sunday, today! Please let me know. Thanks a bunch. Rick
The base needs to be level and fully supported underneath. If you are lucky, it will be level and fully supported just sitting on the floor surface, and you can just hook up your drain, put some screws into the studs so the head of the screw just catches the top lip of the base and holds it in place, not too tight.
If you are not so lucky, you will need to level the base with some mortar mix (concrete aisle of your local hardware store). Spread the mortar mix on the floor and set the base into the mix so it is level and fully supported. Hook up your drain before the mix has set up. Once it is set up, put some screws into the studs so the head of the screw overlaps the upper edge of the base, just tight enough to hold the base in place. The wall board and the sides of the shower unit do the rest.

The Social Network -- David Fincher and Aaron Sorkin's high-style, computer-wise tale of flashy programs and dirty deeds behind the 500 million-user Internet hookup phenomenon Facebook (or at least their version of it) -- has definitely become this year's hot thing in award-caliber, critic-certified, "must-see" movies.
