Exterior Painting
Do you remember when you used to stop by a house on your way back from school? Can you recall what was so attractive in that house? The colour scheme! The colours give an identity to your house. The exterior painting of the house spreads the aroma of freshness inside and outside the house. The chore is not tedious and can be dealt among by your family work force with a few cautions in mind.
The task begins with the removal of all loose paint, rust and other debris. Provide your working army with the relevant tools such as putty knifes, paint scrapers, sand paper, etc. Once the loose paint is removed the area is then cleaned with the water pressure or the hose with the house wash. If mildew is the problem bothering you, clean it with a combination of water and bleach. It is very effective in killing mildew.
Once the painting area is thoroughly cleaned and dried, it is then when you should apply the primer. The primer plays the role of glue between the paint and the surface and thus it has to be properly applied to get a neat paint finish.
Now your house is ready for makeover. Pre decide the colour scheme that you want to apply and be sure the paints are for exterior painting only. The paints available in the market can be easily classified into two types: the oil based paints, which are best known for their weather holding properties and the latex paints, which can be easily maintained.
Take a professional advice to make a close estimate of the number of litres of paint that you will require to cover the whole house. And do not forget about the painting tools such as brushes, rollers, roller pans, painting tape, etc.
Buy or borrow a ladder with bumpers to achieve a stable access to the entire painting area. Apply the coat of the paint and allow it to dry for at least a day or two. At times, the paint that feels dry to touch is wet from within. Once dried completely, if you feel necessary, apply the second coat. And thus, when you manage to involve family or friends, a house of your dreams may be ready in front of you.
But if you find it too difficult to deal with external painting on your own, there are always professional painters available who can help you. They have professional equipment and experience which is crucial in case an unexpected event happens.

I would like to know about the properties of linseed oil.....?
I was trying to make marbalized paper. I bought a tube of oil based paint and mixed in some linseed oil to create a loose consistency so that I could flick it off of the brush into my pan of water. Instead of floating on top of the water, the paint mixture sunk to the bottom of the plastic container. I lowered the paper to the bottom of the container to absorb the paint. It has been five days and the paper is very oily still and the paint has not dried yet. Why did the paint sink to the bottom and not float?
Why is the paint still wet, and why is the paper so oily?
Well, I'm not that good an artist, but I usually add linseed oil when I want to be able to modify the paint strokes without damaging the already dry paint underneath. Adding linseed oil extends the drying out time a lot. It gives you a pocket of time when you can wipe off paint that you wish to remove.
I also use linseed when I want to have a watercolor effect using oils as it also thins out the pigment.
