The basic definition of an Independent Oil and Gas Company is a non-integrated company which receives nearly all of its revenues from production at the wellhead. They are exclusively in the exploration and production segment of the industry, with no downstream marketing or refining within their operations. The tax definition published by the IRS states that a firm is an Independent if its refining capacity is less than 50,000 barrels per day on any given day or their retail sales are less than $5 million for the year. Independents range in size from large publically held companies to small proprietorships.
Many independents are privately held small companies with less than 20 employees. The Independent Petroleum Association of America (IPAA) recorded in a 1998 survey that "a large percentage of independents are organized as C Corporations and S Corporations at 47.6% and 27.7%, respectively. A total of 91.4% of responding companies are classified as independent (versus integrated) for tax purposes. More than one fifth of responding companies reported their stock is publicly traded."
Independent producers derive investment capital from a variety of sources. A 1998 IPAA survey reports that 36.2% of capital is generated through internal sources followed by banks 27.8 % and outside investors (oil & gas partners) at 20.3 %.
Supplying Future Energy Needs
The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) states in their Annual Energy Outlook 2007, "Despite the rapid growth projected for biofuels and other non-hydroelectric renewable energy sources and the expectation that orders will be placed for new nuclear power plants for the first time in more than 25 years, oil, coal, and natural gas still are projected to provide roughly the same 86-percent share of the total U.S. primary energy supply in 2030 that they did in 2005." In this report the EIA also predicts consistent growth in U.S. energy demand from 100.2 quadrillion Btu in 2005 to 131.2 quadrillion Btu in 2030.
Maturing production areas in the lower 48 states and the need to respond to shareholder expectations have resulted in major integrated petroleum companies shifting their exploration and production focus toward the offshore in the United States and in foreign countries. Independent oil and gas producers increasingly account for a larger percentage of domestic production in the near offshore and lower 48 states. Independent producers' share of lower 48 states petroleum production increased form 45 percent in the 1980's to more than 60 percent by 1995. Today the IPAA reports that independent producers develop 90 percent of domestic oil and gas wells, produce 68 percent of domestic oil and produce 82 percent of domestic gas. Clearly, they are vital to meeting our future energy needs.

What are Oil and Gas Jobs All About?
Over the last 30 years since oil was first tapped in the North Sea, the industry has developed to the point where it now has nearly 30,000 oil and gas jobs offshore and employs about 300,000 people onshore but all over the UK.
Pumping, refining and distributing oil and gas from under the sea is a highly technological process and is done out in one of the most inhospitable environments in the World. There are now some 200 offshore facilities producing oil and gas and jobs while supplying around 80% of Great Britain's fuel. The production companies aim to minimize the impact on the natural environment.
From the large drilling and pumping platforms standing on the sea floor, where up to 200 gas and oil jobs are carried out, to the lesser scale floating production vessels on which there may be as few as 30 gas jobs. They are each complex structures in their own right. They transport the equipment needed to get at the oil and gas, and also all the people things needed to sustain the crews doing the gas jobs on board. This means electricity generation, machinery, living quarters and all the other servomechanisms that are taken for granted on dry land.
Five kinds of offshore oil and gas job providers:
- Operating companies are household names and blue chip companies that hold the exploration and production licenses. They run the production facilities. They are all internationally quoted conglomerates, giving gas and oil jobs to many nations of the world.
- Drilling companies subcontract to the operating companies for the specialist drilling work. These companies often operate and maintain their own movable drilling rigs. Like the operating companies, they are international firms.
- Major contractors provide support solutions such as operations and maintenance services to the operating companies. On many installations the gas and oil jobs for the ‘core’ crew of regular offshore people. These contractors can be large international companies, or small to medium sized enterprises.
- FPSO operators operate and maintain ‘floating production storage and offloading’ units. These are huge ships that are designed to remain in place for long periods of time, and carry all of the equipment necessary for safely processing and storing oil and gas.
- Service companies provide all of the many and varied special help to the other companies. Such services would be; well servicing, drilling mud suppliers, cementing companies, scientific well testing specialists, seismology firms, deep-sea divers and catering. After all oil and gas jobs are like armies. They run on their stomachs.
What do offshore oil and gas jobs involve?
The iconic filthy drill floor is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to oil and gas jobs. The 'Christmas tree' sprouts from here. This is a maze of pipe work, cables, joints and valves. The crude oil at this stage is a hot, bubbling, acidic, pressurized liquid made up of gas, water and sand. The crude oil is separated out and piped, or stored until it can be sent ashore.
The gas may be used for fuel, or compressed and piped to shore or returned to the reservoir. Any excess gas is burnt in the platform's flare. The gas liquids are compressed, cooled, dehydrated and piped ashore. Many oil and gas jobs are concerned with monitoring for safe and effective processing of these dangerous substances.
Electricity has to be generated on the offshore facilities to power the production and drilling equipment, and to support people. Oil and gas jobs are often specialized trades and maintenance ones requiring skilled people, technical knowledge and most important of all, teamwork.

What is broken/leaking from the bottom of my '95 KE100 engine?
This bike is a 2-stroke but it is oil injected. Oil and gas is leaking as a mixture from an opening on the bottom of my crank case/engine (Im not sure). The opening looks like a small hood scoop on a car but upside down. I thought it was an air intake of some sort, but fuel mixture is leaking from it. I had my oil pump assembly fixed, but this opening still leaks. Any Ideas?
The hood scoop you speak of is the engine guard.
It prevents obstacles like large rocks and boulders from breaking the bottom of the crankcase.
Remove the guard (unbolt it from the bike).
Clean the engine with engine degreaser (available at auto parts stores).
Run the engine to determine where the leak is.
It might be something as simple as the carburetor overflowing.
U.S. Allows BP to Keep Gulf Oil Well Closed for Another Day
BP is studying the option of a “static kill,” in which mud would be pumped into the well, forcing oil and gas down.
