It never ceases to amaze me when I hear people complaining about the high price of gasoline and then learn that they do not do the simple things to improve their gas mileage. Changing the oil/oil filter at regular intervals, keeping tires at adequate levels, and replacing the air filter can all go a long way toward improving gas mileage. Nobody likes to pay $2.65 a gallon for gas...you can't control supply and demand. You can, however, make sure your car is in top shape by doing simple maintenance which translates into maximum fuel economy. Let's compare and contrast two different types of air filters available for your car.
1. Replacement brands. As the name suggests, these air filters are used once and then tossed after their useful life has ended, which is usually within one year of installation. If you purchase your own air filters then you are familiar with national replacement brands like Fram, Purolator, and Bosch. In addition, brands developed for car manufacturers, such as the Honda Air Filter, are also replacement air filters.
2. Performance brands. Accel, AFE, Airaird, Green Air Filters, K&N Filters, True Flow, and Volant are some of the top performance brands on the market. Originally made for race cars, each performance brand is now available to consumers for the family car, SUV, minivan, or pick up truck. Unlike replacement brands, performance air filters are washable and reusable; can last as long as 50,000 miles before requiring to be cleaned; come with lengthy warranties as long as ten years/one million miles; are designed to increase horsepower and acceleration; and they will not void out your vehicle's warranty. Unlike replacement brands that are filling up our landfills, most performance filters will outlast your car and it probably never will see the bottom of a dump.
Of course, if you are considering purchasing a performance brand air filter you may wonder if you will pay through the nose for your filter. With a little online comparison shopping I learned that a K&N performance filter for my Dodge Neon retails for $44. Compare that price to the $10 I shell out annually for my replacement brand filter and you will see that I would realize my savings by the fifth year. Not bad, considering a performance air filter is much more productive as well as environmentally friendly. Who can put a price on that?
So, if you want a high performing, environmentally friendly product available at a reasonable price, then the replacement air filter should be avoided. You can improve your fuel mileage and help the environment by switching over to a performance air filter today.

Master the Basics of Diesel Engine Maintenance
Maintaining a diesel engine is more than changing oil and fuel and air filters. There are very common practices that you need to include in your diesel engine maintenance so to prolong its life.
For once, you need to mind some very important warm-up recommendations for your transmission and diesel engine. You have to allow a minimum of five minutes for your diesel engine to warm up before applying load. Without proper warm up, a diesel engine would prematurely wear out due to failures and seizures.
When you are operating a diesel engine in cold ambient temperatures, never forget to warm up its transmission oils, as cold temperature would increase oil viscosity. To avoid low hydraulic pressure and delayed oil circulation, you have to make sure you never forget to warm up.
Remember that you would only need a warm diesel engine and not one that’s overheated. When diesel engine overheating happens, you have to remember the basics. First and foremost, you have to stop the diesel engine from operating and keep it idling without any load.
When you try to stop the diesel engine, don’t do it suddenly. You have to let it run for around 5 minutes without any load before shutting it off. You have to allow the diesel engine to cool down and set it aside for about 30 minutes.
While the diesel engine is still running, never take off the radiator cap off or even just immediately after it has stopped. This will force out a very hot coolant from its radiator. You can only remove the radiator cap when it is cool enough that you can touch it with your bare hands. Take time to slowly loosen the cap to allow pressure to be releases before you totally remove it.
You then have to identify which repair needs to be done. Once identified, do the repair and fill in the radiator with the right amount of coolant antifreeze. You can use a hydrometer or ask any service shop to check it with a refractometer to properly check the concentration. Tighten the radiator cap securely.
You have to throw away unused coolant-antifreeze properly as it is poisonous to all living things, pets and humans. This is considered hazardous waste and if you do not have the proper facilities to dispose of this, you need to have it disposed by your hazardous waste service department.
Most importantly, remember that a diesel engine that overheats is a sign that it will be damaged beyond repair.

My 2001 dodge durango 4.7 liter wont start. The oil came out of the motor to by where the air filter is ?
and it looks weird. looks like sludge.. i checked the oil and it had no oil in the motor, i put 5 quarts of oil and the truck still wont start and the the oil now smells like gas
I believe you've blown your motor up. Not sure how you did this, but I suspect you burned a piston, blew the oil out of the engine and ended up with some being blown back through the intake tract. If you ran the engine 2 quarts low, you'd pretty much toast the engine as you'd destroy the cam(s). Since you had no oil in the engine, it's destroyed and so full of metal debris that I'd not advise attempting a rebuild.
This could not have happened without all kinds of warning lights coming on. You should have seen an Engine Temp warning and then a low Oil Pressure warning as the engine was dieing!
At this point, I'm afraid the vehicle is worthless. Your best option will be to find someone who can put a good used engine into the vehicle. Expect this will cost $3000 - $5000.
