Preparing To Flush Your Radiator
In order for your car's radiator to be cool, the entire system needs to be cleaned regularly. Solid deposits can build up in your car's system that will clog the cooling system if it goes unattended. Radiator flushes are quick and inexpensive.
The first thing you want to do is make sure you have all your supplies. Don't start the process without everything you need. You don't want to start and then start over because you have to pick up supplies at the auto supply retailer, especially if you already drained the radiator out completely!
Supplies:
. funnel
. coolant
. cloth rag
. radiator flush solution
. Phillips head screwdriver or wrench
. used coolant catcher or receptacle
BEFORE YOU START, let your engine cool down completely before you loosening or removing the radiator cap. The last thing you want is hot coolant spilling on you - HOT!
Draining The Radiator And Cooling System
First, flush the old coolant out of your car's radiator.
To do this, you'll need to locate your radiator's drain plug. If you're not sure where it is, you should consult your user's manual. Normally, it's located along the bottom of your radiator. It will be either a screw plug, a bolt plug or a simple drain valve. Before you do anything, place your used coolant receptacle in place right under the drain before you open it.
With your coolant receptacle beneath the drain, unscrew the plug and let the coolant drain out completely. If you have a screw or bolt type of radiator plug, remove it completely. If it happens to be a simple drain valve, make sure it's all the way open.
CAUTION: Keep coolant away from children and pets. It has a sweet smell and taste and animals are attracted to it. Ingesting it is very dangerous, even fatal. Be sure not to leave any around.
Add the Radiator Flush Cleaning Solution
Now that you've drained all the coolant from the radiator, replace your drain plug and then remove the radiator cap. Pour the radiator flush solution in the radiator then fill it to the top with water.
Now that you've drained all the coolant from the radiator, replace your drain plug and then remove the radiator cap. Pour the radiator flush solution in the radiator then fill it to the top with water.
Replace the radiator cap and make sure it's tight, but don't over-tighten. Start the car and let the engine run until it reaches its normal operating temperature.
Turn the heater on, set it at the hottest level and then let your engine ruin for about ten minutes with the heater on. After ten minutes, turn the engine off and wait for it too cool. Feel the metal radiator or radiator cap. If it feels hot when you touch it then it's still too hot to open. Wait for it to cool down.
CAUTION: Do not loosen or remove your radiator cap while the engine is hot. You can suffer serious injury!
Draining The Radiator Flush Solution
If you're certain your car's engine is cool, open up the drain and empty out the radiator. Be careful not to pour coolant on the ground. You're almost done.
Refill The Radiator
We're at the final step. Now that your radiator system is completely flushed, you can refill it with fresh coolant.
Replace your drain plug or close the drain valve depending on which you have. Using your funnel to eliminate any spills, fill the radiator with coolant and water. Make sure the mixture is 50/50! To be sure, you might want to pick up the premixed coolant. You can find some at your auto retailer. If you buy it premixed it will eliminate measuring the ratio. Once the radiator is filled, fill the plastic coolant container if there is a separate opening for it using the premixed coolant.
Tighten all of your radiator caps and you're all set!

Oil and Brake Fluid: Monthly Automotive Maintenance
Oil and Brake Fluid: Monthly Automotive Maintenance
Every new car comes with a maintenance guide, and the recommended rules to follow are created to help you keep your car in optimum health. And, since the new car models and makes can go more miles and longer times between tune-ups, it really saves you time and money at those routine tune-ups, if you stick to the maintenance guidelines the rest of the year.
In the list below, are the first in a series of instructions for performing several of the most important maintenance checks that will keep your car running well. You will find the type of fluid or oil that is best for your car stated in the instruction manual of your car. If you bought your car from a previous owner, and don’t have the original owner/operator manual, it is easy enough to call, or visit online, the manufacturer of your car and request a new one.
Checking the Oil
Oil expands when it is warm, and this is when you should check it. A cool engine will give you a lower level reading on the oil, and if you top it off, when the engine is warm again, the oil will overflow.
1) Make sure the car is parked on a level part of your driveway.
2) Turn off the engine, and give the car about 10 minutes to let the oil drain into the crankcase.
3) Usually, you’ll find your dipstick near the spark plugs. The dipstick is a long skinny piece of metal with a loop or a “T” handle on the end of it.
4) Pull the dipstick out, wipe it off with a piece of paper towel, or a clean rag. Then stick it back in, now pull it out again and you will clearly see how much oil is in there.
5) If the level is noticeably lower than the full line, then you’ll need to top off the level.
6) Locate and remove your oil filler cap, it is somewhere in the middle, near the top of the engine.
7) Add just a bit of oil, then check the level again, going slowly, just a little at a time will save you from the major clean ups needed if you were to put in too much too fast.
8) Make sure that your filler cap is screwed back on, correctly and securely when you are done.
Checking the Brake Fluid.
In newer model cars, this maintenance step is pretty easy, in older cars, it is a bit trickier. Just remember that brake fluid is extremely toxic, be very careful to avoid getting it on any part of you.
1) In most cars manufactured since 1980, the brake fluid reservoir is clear plastic, so you can easily see if your fluid level is low.
2) If your car is older than 1980, you need to find the Brake Master Cylinder. On the driver’s side of the engine compartment, near the back, is the most likely place to find it. It will be a small rectangular metal or plastic container.
3) Remove the cap, and add fluid to the “full line”, if it has dual containers, fill both halves.
4) Replace the cover and you’re all done.

What will happen if I put a drop of water in my oil filler cap of my car?
I accidentally dripped a drop of water into my engine this morning when topping up the oil, what will happen?
Thanks for the answers guys! Phew!
NO IDEA why people have been voting it thumbs down! THIS WAS NOT ME!!! I havn't even got enough points to be able to thumb up or down yet!
A few drops will not hurt at all. The hot oil will turn the water to steam, which will collect at the highest point in the crankcase (engine's open area). You might see a little white/yellowish mayonaise looking film under the oil cap tomorrow. wipe it off.
Don't worry about it.
Why all these thumbs down? Give us your answer on how it DOES matter, you little know-it-all.
(I never thought it was you, tbh_mint, but rather some 16 year old "mechanic")
Fear of Oil Damage Heightens as Storm 'Bonnie' Approaches the Gulf
Listen to the Audio Although Tropical Depression Bonnie isn't expected to do much harm on land, many along the Gulf Coast worry that high winds could intensify damage that has already been done by the oil leak. Spencer Michel reports from Louisiana. JIM LEHRER: The storm system named Bonnie took direct aim today at the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. It lost some strength on the way, but its ...
