Oil Drain Valve

Here we are the first signs of spring, well a bit of sunshine at least after the gloom of this long winter that we are having here in the UK. So time to get the Norton out of the garage and fire it up, this always takes a bit of doing first time after it has been standing a while. I do try and run my Commando regularly through the winter even if I don't ride it often. I like to start it and warm it up every couple of weeks if I can but it never really works out that way.

I last started mine about a month ago so I am sure all the oil will have drained into the sump by now, so first job is to drain it out and pour it back into the oil tank where it belongs.

An interesting point about the petrol is that it does not appear to matter if it is old, it still fires up OK even after long periods of sitting in the tank. I have heard tales of it going off in the tank or setting hard in the carbs but I personally have never had a problem with old petrol, although many a time I have blamed it for a bike that won't start only to find out later there is something else wrong. I can remember years ago when I was buying and selling bikes, I picked some bikes up that had been standing for years and still they started on the strange smelling petrol that sat in their tanks.

More of a problem is likely to be dirt or rust from the tank blocking things up, better to keep your tank full I always say, although others may have different ideas.

Back to that oil in the sump, I have heard say that if your Norton Commando is wet sumping when stood the oil pump must be worn, I guess it depends how quickly the oil drains into the sump but I believe with a geared pump this will always happen over time. Although Norton always denied any problem they did finally fit an anti-drain valve on the MKIII for some reason?. With regard to after market anti-drain valves and speaking from personal experience I have to say DO NOT FIT ONE it may work fine for years as mine did but it only has to fail once to be very expensive. Some people put taps in the oil line, I guess thinking they will never forget to open it before they ride their bike but again you will only forget it once. The answer is either put up with draining the sump, run your bike every week or so, re-condition your oil pump to slow the flow or fit a MKIII timing cover.

Changing Your Oil

Every automobile has a list of operations that needs to be performed on a regular basis to ensure its reliability and consistent performance.

Changing your oil is essentially done in the same manner on every passenger vehicle, although the locations of various parts may vary. If you understand the concept of how the lubrication system for your engine operates, you'll have much less trouble switching between makes and models. The goal of the oil to begin with, is to reduce friction between moving metal parts within your engine that will come into contact with one another. Friction causes heat and damage, so the oil is circulated constantly throughout the engine to prevent it. A properly lubricated engine will last you as long as you live, with nothing but periodic maintenance! Unfortunately, this simple operation is often overlooked or postponed for whatever reasons people come up with. This can and will lead to permanent engine damage if not taken care of.

Learning to perform this task yourself can save you money, gasoline, and time, but before you get started you should make sure you have all the necessary tools to complete this task. Any work done on a vehicle is made frustrating very quickly if you are not properly equipped to deal with what you are to encounter with. Changing your oil is not difficult or complex, but there is a specialized tool that you will require. This certain tool is called a strap wrench, and they should be available at your local auto parts store for no more than five or six dollars. You'll also need the proper amount of oil for your vehicle (see owner's manual for the oil type your engine requires), a clean funnel, and a wrench that will fit around the oil drain plug bolt. This bolt is located on the bottom of the oil pan, which in turn resides underneath your engine. Avoid filters that contain cardboard-type elements, as they can sometimes clog very easily. This will cause problems elsewhere in the vehicle. Get a container that will catch and hold the amount of oil that is said to be in your vehicle's engine.

When you're ready to get started, first warm up your engine for a couple of minutes to get the oil hot and flowing freely, then turn your ignition off. Put your catch container underneath of the drain plug, being mindful of its angle. Remove the oil cap on the valve cover, then unscrew the drain plug and move your hand out of the way fast. Don't drop the plug in the oil! Once it's mostly drained, you can remove the filter using the strap wrench. Be careful, it is filled with roughly 3/4 quart of hot oil, so have a dirty rag underneath to catch whatever spills. Install the new filter as instructed on the box. Now all you have to do is screw your plug in, fill her up, and replace your cap! Be sure you dispose of all oil correctly after putting it in the empty oil bottles you just bought, and you're good to go!

oil leak 1993 dodge spirit?

i just aquired a 93 dodge spirit with a 3.0 v6 that leaks oil horribly. I'm thinking front seal but not sure This car leaks just as much oil sitting as running, valve cover gaskets, oil pan gasket, drain plug, have all been checked. It is coming from the front of the engine. thanks for the help.

that,s a nice car ! if it leaks sitting still then it sounds like the drain plug is loose but you said you checked that so you say it,s in the front so it,s probably either the front seal or the timing case gasket.
