Your Guide to Finding Good Cable Tie Mounts

Ever since the invention of cable tie mounts in 1958, these ingenious little contraptions have evolved into several forms. This article explains everything you need to know about the different types of cable tie mounts, including how and where to get good ones.

Prior to their invention by the Thomas & Betts company in 1958, the simple task of tying things together was quite complex indeed! Manufacturers routinely need to bundle things together, such as electrical wiring or other cables in appliances, cars and aircraft. A typical cable tie is simply a strip of nylon. One end of the strip ends in a small rectangular case, with an opening in it. The other end of the strip can be passed through the opening in the case. One side of the strip contains "teeth", or what are called "gear racks".

This geared surface is designed to pass through the casing in a single direction only. Once pushed in, the teeth catch on a ratchet inside the case. This holds the strip very firmly in place, and prevents it from being pulled out. Consequently, the tie can only be tightened, but cannot be loosened.

Such a system provides a very secure and reliable method for fastening virtually anything. Indeed, cable ties have come to be used for a wide variety of purposes. The list below describes the main types.

* Coloured Cable Tie: Nylon ties are available in several colours, the most common ones being black, blue, red, green, yellow and silver. Uncoloured or "natural" nylon ties are just plain translucent white. Colour coded ties are useful for binding electrical cables.

* Printed Cable Tie: This type comes with text printed on the nylon band. Any desired text is printed by the manufacturer. When handling dozens of component clusters this can save precious time and make maintenance simpler.

* Releasable Cable Tie: The most unique type, in that it is actually reusable. Unlike other types, this one has a press spring mechanism in the casing. Pressing down on this spring allows the ratchet to release the gear track, thereby loosening the tie. Reusable ties aren't suitable for heavy-duty applications, as it is advisable to use new ties for such purposes.

* Stainless Steel Cable Ties: These are simply tie mounts made of stainless steel. Nylon ties are quite hardy, and can withstand temperatures between -40 and +80 degrees Celsius. For even tougher conditions, steel may be used, as it is especially resistant to corrosion.

Mounting I-PASS Transponder on a Motorcycle?

This one is for the Chicagoland or any Tollway Riders:

I purchased an I-Pass for my motorcycle (according to the brochure, all it says is that it can be mounted on a motorcycle). I was wondering if anyone else out there has the transponder mounted on their windshield. I am thinking of placing it on the lower half of my Boulevard C50 windshield so that it doesn't interfere with my vision. Just for kicks, here is what the clueless people at the help desk told me:

1. Carry it in your pocket and when the tollway comes up, just yank it out and hold it up

2. Place it on your helmet

3. Stick it on the highest point of the windshield. (Yeah right, so I can't see whats in front of me)

So it can be used for motorcycles, but I have no clue where to stick it so it actually registers when I pass through the I-Pass lane.

I have a cycle, but never used my I Pass with it. From my car experience, I've just driven through th eOpen Road Toll lanes with it laying on my dash any which way, it always catches it. I would be willing to say it will work if you just leave it in your pocket, without actually being outside (since it reads through a glass windshield, I don't think your coat will be a big hinderance to it. The way to try it is to go through a cash lane with it in your pocket and see if the attendant waves you through (or you get the green light). If it doesn't, then you can just take it out and you know that the pocket won't work, then they'll pick you up and wave you through. The other options: You can use that free velcro sort of stuff and just attach it to your tank (not a perfect solution as I'm sure you don't want that on your tank), OR just carry it with you, as I mentioned, and they can get their toll later via V Toll, here is a copy and paste from the I Pass website:

What are the vToll & tToll charges posted to my account?
Sometimes tolls do not post to your account at the time of the transaction. This is usually a due to a missing, improperly mounted, or inactive transponder with a dead battery. These unsuccessful transactions are recorded on video and your license plate is later matched to your I-PASS account. The toll is then posted to your account at this later date. These video-recorded tolls are called vTolls. You will see “vToll” appear next to the transaction when you review your account records. Tolls that are successfully deducted at the time of transaction are labeled “toll.”

What is the “vToll” label in my account history mean?
This indicates that the toll was not deducted from your account at the time you drove through the I-PASS lane. It was deducted at a later date after the license plate in the video record was matched to the plate registered to your account.
