New tensioner and engine mount, is the mechanic pulling my leg?

I took my 98 Honda Civic in today to replace the timing belt/water pump because it is at 133,000 and it's never been done. The mechanic called me and said they recommend replacing the tensioner on the timing belt and the engine motor mount, which will add an additional $230 to my bill.

Does the tensioner and the motor mount on a Honda usually need replacing at 133,000 miles? Is the mechanic trying to scam me?

I'm not a Honda expert, but engines with timing belts are either called "interference" engines or "non interference" engines. Your owner's manual might tell you if your motor is one or the other.The difference is that if the interference engine's timing belt breaks on you driving down the road, the valves will instantly slam into your pistons literally destroying the enigne even before you can shut off the ignition key. The non interference engine that won't happen, but you will still be stranded on the side of the road.

You should be lucky you got 133k out of your original belt. Most engines require a belt anywhere from every 60k to 90k, and yes, Id definitely replace the tensioner. If it fails, so will the belt....and well, you get the picture.

One way to test the motor mounts is to put the car on level ground like in an open parking lot and start the engine. If you have an automatic transmission, put the car in Drive and put your left foot on the brake pedal firmly. Take your right foot and lightly give the engine gas while a friend stands off to the side of the opened engine compartment and observes how much movement the engine makes as the engine meets the resistance of the brake pedal. It will move some, but excesssive movement or clunking sounds will likely make a motor mount a needed item. Depending on how tall you are, you may be able to watch the movement while sitting in the driver's seat and looking through the gap between the hood and the car body. Usually there are two or three engine mounts, so make sure they all get replaced, not just the "bad one".

Not knowing what town/area you live in, I'd say the $230 is about on par for the repair, but your options are to do it yourself, and if the engine compartment is a tight fit for hands getting to the components, then it's really a good idea to have the mechanic do the job. Not to mention the fact you likelly don't have the tools and know how to do the job yourself. A new tensioner should run about $50 or less and the motor mount I'd only be guessing. 133k is about time for a motor mount start going bad. Having one fail on the highway isn't as dmaging as the valves scenario though.

As far as the mechanic scamming you, have you used this person in the past? One of the necessities in life is a good car mechanic that you can trust, be it an independent guy or a dealer. All car repair estimates to me sound high because the shop is making money on the parts they use and charging $60/hour for labor or even more.
