American car buyers have always been known for their preference for high performance vehicles. Aside from offering the essentials, their vehicle of choice needs to have at least a small degree of luxuriousness. Luxury aside, car buyers also opt for high performance vehicles which come with a responsive handling and very comfortable seats.
Recently though, the American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA) reported that car buyers are now changing their preferences and are also looking for another special attribute that a vehicle should possess. The association reported that drivers are becoming more and more enamored with silent cars.
The Wall Street Journal reported that the main cause of a vehicle's noise is its age. As a vehicle ages, just like humans, it exhibits flaws which may even result to car breakdowns. The international daily newspaper cited that the worst cause of noise in vehicles is wind. This actually refers to that sound that is produced when the wind flows over the outline of the vehicle.
This is why car makers are looking to decrease the coefficient of drag of their vehicles. Lowering the coefficient of drag not only gives the car a good appearance but it also increases the top speed and lowers the amount of noise produced by the wind flowing over the vehicle.
The noise as the car ages has always been one of the problems of automobiles. Car manufacturers are already taking steps to address the problem. Some of the players in the auto industry that has taken steps to combat wind noise are General Motors, Hyundai, and Ford. These car companies are developing new materials to user on their vehicles to reduce the noise reaching the interior of the vehicle.
Aside from using new materials, these companies are also working out new manufacturing techniques to further improve noise reduction. Noise control engineers are also being employed by these companies to oversee the development of quiet cars.
Hyundai, the biggest Korean car maker, is using electronically controlled adjustable engine mounts in the new Veracruz sport utility vehicle. Aside from the adjustable motor mount which is as tough as a Volvo rotor, the Korean brand also integrated extra thick lightweight foam insulations on the said SUV. The insulation reduces the amount of noise coming from the engine bay that goes right into the vehicle's cockpit.
These improvements on newer models of vehicle close the gap between luxury and non-luxury vehicles. As the cost of production of materials used in noise reduction go lower, more and more vehicles will become quieter. This shows that the auto industry is always tuned to what their consumers want. It is common that motorists associate the absence of noise inside a cockpit to overall quality and the new vehicles being manufactured by car makers are blurring the distinction between a luxury and non-luxury vehicle. This, of course, will serve to benefit the consumers.

Bmw Hydrogen 7 Invades the Streets
Following its launch at the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, a fleet of three BMW Hydrogen 7s will take part in the Revolve Brighton to London rally for low and zero-emission cars. The rally which is scheduled today will start on Madeira Drive in Brighton; the fleet of Hydrogen 7s will follow a pre-planned route ending at Trafalgar Square in London.
During the course of the event, HRH The Prince of Wales, a Government Minister, the Deputy Mayor of London, Nicky Gavron and a number of other dignitaries will be introduced to the world’s first hydrogen-powered emissions-free luxury saloon car. After the rally, the BMW Hydrogen 7 will be displayed at the London Science Museum along with other history-significant vehicles.
“The use of the BMW Hydrogen 7 at the Revolve Brighton to London rally marks yet another step towards hydrogen powered cars becoming an everyday reality on the streets of this country. Zero emission motoring is no longer a dream and this car proves the technology isn’t as far away as some sceptics may think,” said John Hollis, the BMW Group Head of Government and Industrial Affairs.
He added, “We want to kick-start the debate about the future of personal mobility and the importance of hydrogen as the definitive fuel. The opinions of politicians and other influencers are important in driving this forward to ensure that hydrogen-power comes to fruition as soon as possible.”
The BMW Hydrogen 7, which is based on the chassis of the standard 7-series, comes equipped with a bivalent internal combustion engine that is capable of running on hydrogen or gasoline. In hydrogen mode, the Hydrogen 7 emits nothing more than water vapor. Powered by a 260hp 12-cylinder engine, the saloon car accelerates from zero to 62mph in 9.5 seconds before going on to an electronically-limited 143mph top speed.
The driver can switch smoothly and quickly from hydrogen to conventional petrol power at the press of a steering wheel-mounted button with its unique dual fuel engine. The dual power technology means the car has a cruising range in excess of 125 miles in the hydrogen mode with a further 300 miles under gasoline power. The Hydrogen 7 is equipped with a BMW heater core, 74-litregasoline tank and an extra hydrogen fuel tank holding up to eight kilograms of liquid hydrogen which is stored at -253 degrees Celsius. Such flexibility means the driver of a BMW Hydrogen 7 is able to use the vehicle at all times, even when the nearest hydrogen filling station is out of range. In Wembley, a bespoke filling station has been constructed to support the automaker’s plans.
Engine power and torque in the car saloon remain exactly the same notwithstanding the kind of fuel used. The driver can switch between the two without any effect on driving performance or behavior. The Hydrogen 7 always gives priority to the use of hydrogen but, should this run out; the vehicle automatically switches to gasoline power.
Unlike previous hydrogen concept cars flaunted by rival manufacturers the Hydrogen 7 is deemed a milestone in the auto history. It is a full production ready vehicle, which has met all the strict processes and final sign-off criteria that each present BMW model undergoes.
“A more efficient route for car makers would be to focus on high-mileage gasoline-powered vehicles. They are far simpler and less sexy than hydrogen cars, Mr. Talbot says, but for now they stack up as the cleaner option,” the Wall Street Journal concluded.

What Engine can fit in a Fait 500 (classic not new)?
Ok, so i want to start a project with a 1970 Fiat 500 and i want it to ROCKET down the street but i here that with the kawasiki 1300 or any other motorcycle dose not have a reverse so i need an engine that has a reverse and can fit a mannual and that does not call for alot of cutting and welding just a little and for the new motor mounts so... like ALSO can a VW BEETLE (CLASSIC) ENGINE fit in there with out what a said before because that would be great for me!!!! i also here porche is good??
It's not just about the bulk, there are several things you ought to know:
1) check what it takes in your area to make the modified vehicle street-legal - normally a design review and a physical inspection of some kind are required, and it is not free;
2) no engine has a reverse - the gearbox does. Motorcycle gearboxes don't have differentials nor semiaxles as they output to a single wheel;
3) fitting a gearbox to an engine rarely involves cutting and welding, it's more precision mechanics which, by the way, has to deal with the flywheel/clutch detail;
4) you might fit a VW or Porche in there if you eliminate the rear seats to accommodate the extra bulk, but it's a structural problem and you must think of a proper pipe cage;
5) you have to design the powertrain (engine, transmission, semiaxles and wheels) to operate properly together;
6) make sure that the vehicle has proper suspensions, brakes and handling;
7) remember that insurance doesn't pay if you're involved in an accident...
