I have a 72 automatic chevy 350 that is specified to idle at 600rpm, when the engine isn't heated up it will idle a little lower. You can get a timing light with a tach on it which is pretty nice.

Also these bars that you are talking about go from the motor mount to the transmission bellhousing? I haven't seen anything like that on chevrolets that I have worked on. As long as the motor mounts, transmission mount, and bellhousing bolts to the engine are all good I can't see what the point of it is.
