Motor Block Cleaning

It's always winter somewhere where machines are needed. Regardless of whether you are dealing with a snow blower clearing a residential sidewalk, or much heavier equipment keeping an acre of parking lot clean, there are numerous techniques people use for making sure machines not only perform well in the cold months - but also survive them. If you have invested time and money into your fleet, you should take some simple steps to keep them humming year after year, no matter the weather.

Always read and understand the Operation and Maintenance manual:

This may sound like a no-brainer but the first step to ensuring your machine's health is reading the manual. The operating manual for a big machine is your most important tool in ensuring your safety, and the safety of others on any job site, small or large. Some companies, like Caterpillar, affix the operating and maintenance manual to the seat of all machinery with a lanyard, to ensure ease of access and prevent misplacement. Also, regardless of the weather, machinery should also be inspected to ensure that the equipment is working properly - any unnoticed damage or need of repair can result in injury.

Prepare Machines for the Cold:

To better prepare your machines for cold weather, try the following: use block heaters and enclosed storage facilities when machines are not being used. A block heater is an electric heater that heats an engine to ease starting in cold weather. They are connected to normal AC power overnight or before driving, which allows easier starting in cold temperatures. Heaters are also available for motor oil so that warm oil can quickly circulate and warm the engine during start-up. On that note, always use correct lubricants and provide the correct cooling system protection for the conditions you will be working in. Storing machinery in enclosed facilities when the machine is not being used will prevent exposure to the elements - like rust - which can harm a vehicle.

Miscellaneous:

There are numerous other precautions you can take to ensure the life of your machinery. Remember to: inspect all rubber parts weekly; keep all batteries fully charged; always fill the fuel tank at the end of the shift; check the air filters on a regular basis when snow is present; run the engine until it reaches operating temperatures; never remove the air cleaner element when snow packing occurs; if your machine is shut down for more than 16 hours; the engine will cool to the external temperature; and always maintain your machine per the Operation and maintenance manual during cold weather.

Block Toys Wooden And Plastic

Angie Taylor grins sheepishly. "Before we go to the park, the rule is that the blocks all get picked up and put back in their bins. Of course, once we get back, they get dumped right back out again. At least the room is clean for a half-hour a day." Though she hates the constant mess, Angie recognizes the benefits of block play for her children, and has decided to, for the most part, just look the other way. "I figure, once they're in college my house will be clean. And in the meantime, they're not watching much TV!"

Angie's children, ages two, four and seven love playing with their blocks, and they own several sets of varying types. And, as they play, they are developing skills and learning concepts.

Cause and Effect

Everyone loves to build a good block tower, then knock it down. Angie's two-year-old, Seth, is working on his fine motor skills and concentration. "He will build towers for an hour or more," says Angie. "And he seems so focused the whole time. It's one of the only things he does with this much concentration." Learning to balance the blocks on top of each other is teaching Seth concepts of gravity and balance and increasing his hand-eye coordination. Of course, when he knocks over his big brother or sister's towers he learns a whole different kind of cause and effect!

Concentration

Seth isn't the only one learning concentration skills. The older children spend lots of time making their creations just right, as well. Becca, the seven-year-old, lines her Lego houses up and spends lots of time with the finer details, such as window and door placement.

Fantasy Play

All three children engage in long, complicated imaginary play with their blocks. They build cities and towns, then drive matchbox cars through or invite action figures to move in. Becca says, "We like to make wild west towns with cowboys. And sometimes we do a map of our neighborhood. My favorite is the swimming pool." Becca has integrated a piece of blue construction paper into the neighborhood, where Fisher Price People are enjoying a splash. She says that sometimes Seth comes along and destroys her villages, but she's decided to just pretend that he's King Kong. After the Seth devastation, she rebuilds the houses and schools.

Bradley, age four, sometimes joins Becca in her grand city development schemes, but he often prefers to help Seth find innovative ways to build and destroy. Both boys are big fans of cause and effect. Brad has found that using his helicopters, planes and large cars makes some really cool crashes. He spends increasingly longer amounts of time getting his towers and structures just right...then practicing destruction in varying amounts of force, to see how far he can get the blocks to fly. Though it might just look like aggression and devastation, Bradley is learning spatial concepts, geometry and physics.

All three kids agree that playing with blocks is pretty cool.

The Taylor family owns many different types of blocks:

  1. Brightly painted wooden blocks
  2. Log-style blocks
  3. Both small and large plastic brick blocks
  4. Nesting blocks - hard plastic and a softer, fabric set
  5. Large cardboard blocks

I have a 92 PE caprice-5.7?

I have a 92 PE caprice-5.7 200k on car and 8500 on motor and trans rebuilt- sudden voltage drops for 3 days then complete loss of all power (blackout of the whole car- so as I coasted to the stop- everything came back on- so I restarted it and is dropped power a few times ( but didn't die) in the next 2 hrs or driving- so a new CORRECT alternator was installed and the problem continued in the daytime- I cleaned the ground from motor to frame and the motor to firewall- took it out today for 20 min and it seemed fine- however if I turn the fan on high the trouble lights come on and it wants to die- but it doesn't- however the volt meter suddenly goes to discharge and it starves for fuel (new fuel filter too- I have ruled out the alternator- I did not clean the engine block sides of the grounds as they are oil free and it was rebuilt by the county 2 years ago - Help

Like the previous post says - look for shorts, not just in the fan/fan relay, but in the wiring leading up. Perhaps there's some splices in the wiring from the police duty that haven't been done quite right.

Also, check your relays and see if they're within spec.

If you haven't cleaned the engine grounds, run a continuity check from the block surface to the ground and see if you have high resistance before you worry about disconnecting and servicing those connections.
