When Universal launched the Fast and the Furious series of street racing films, they only expected only a modest return. Although street racing was getting a lot of press attention and the popularity of modified imports were exploding, the movies was never expected to be a blockbuster. However, the film was an unexpected summer hit. It grossed $40,089,015 on its opening weekend, surpassing the film's $38 million budget. It may have been the media buzz and gear head buzz surrounding the movies that caused an explosion in the box office and gave global insight and curiosity into the supercharged social scene of racing and customizing cars.
Two of the films' stars that caused the movies to thunder in the box office, were the Mazda RX7 and the Mitsubishi Eclipse. One of Japan's largest automotive aftermarket companies, Veilside, built the Mazda RX7 that was later filmed in Fast and Furious to show off its "Fortune" wide-body kit at the 2005 Tokyo Auto Salon. At the time of the show, the car was painted red, and it had everything a show car should - an HKS T04Z single-turbo conversion kit, a massive intercooler shoved under the front bumper, big Rotora brakes, A'PEXi coil-over shocks and vast 19-inch Andrew Evo-V wheels inside P255/30ZR19 front and P305/25ZR19 rear Toyo Proxes radials.
For the Fast & the Furious: Tokyo Drift, the same Mazda RX7 was painted Sunset Orange Pearl and Veilside built three more visual clones, including one that was destined for destruction using a previous Mazda RX7 that had appeared in both previous Fast and Furious movies. One of the cars used in the previous Fast and Furious movie was Dominic Toretto's red RX.
In the sequel to the Fast & Furious, 2 Fast, 2 Furious, the character Roman Pierce was given a new partner in his adventure, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder with a Snyper Body Kit. The car was personally picked by John Singleton for Pierce to drive and the car came equipped with a Vortech Supercharger V5 G trim, HKS Blow valve, HKS AFR (fuel management controller), RC engineering 270cc injectors, Boost Variant Fuel Pressure Regulator with Gauge and a Magnecor 8.5mil Competition wires and a license plate that said "H8TER."
The Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder had the most elaborate paint job of any of the cars built for any of the Fast & Furious movies. The patchwork design on the car were not graphics but painted on with House of Kolors paint. It was one of the few cars in the film that wasn't destroyed although a total of four were made for the filming. It is rumored that the car exhaust was swapped with a Subaru WRX.
Like all cars in the Fast & Furious series, both cars were heavily reinforced with a roll cage for bridge jumping. Also there was so much neon lighting used in the cars that a technical specialist whose expertise was in shooting neon on film was kept on set at all times. This obviously cost a lot more and cut into the budget but it made the film authentic.
Mitsubishi Concept Poised for Motor City Launch
Mitsubishi Motors Corp. will set free a powerful concept car poised for launch at the North American International Auto Show next month. The concept is designed to give aficionados some hints about the forthcoming Eclipse.
Called the "Mitsubishi Concept," the stunning coupe is powered by what the Japanese automaker describes as a "new high-efficiency, low-emissions 2.2-liter four-cylinder DOHC 16-valve turbodiesel engine." The said engine, equipped with a new catalytic converter, generates 201 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. It also gets a new catalytic converter system. Mitsubishi did not release fuel economy numbers, only noting that the concept has "a high degree of fuel efficiency."
The Eclipse sports coupe has been a cornerstone of Mitsubishi's American lineup since 1989 and helps to draw the Y generation, often first-time buyers to the brand. The Concept-RA, designed in Japan with a more aggressive profile than recent concepts from the automaker, is powered by a new 2.2-liter, 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine that harks back to the Eclipse's roots, reported The Detroit News.
The car’s engine delivers power to all four wheels through a dual-clutch automated manual transmission. The Concept-RA borrows many parts from the Lancer Evolution and Evo X, including anti-lock brakes and stability control, but is also equipped with active steering and active suspension control to advance driver input over torque and braking, while enhancing traction control, cornering and vehicle stability, the report continued.
The Concept has a new body structure using an aluminum space frame. Some exterior parts, including the hood and fenders, are made from plastic resin. According to the automaker the plastic resin has high impact resistance compared to the traditional material. The concept coupe also gets the S-AWC vehicle dynamics control system driveline and the Twin Clutch SST automated manual transmission used in the Lancer Evolution X.
The concept is also equipped with an aluminum space frame, and engine hood, fenders and other body panels constructed of plastic resin, to enhance crash protection and reduce weight. With less weight, the smaller engine does not have to work as hard to propel the Concept-RA. The next-gen Eclipse will showcase advanced auto technology developed by the Japanese automaker. The technology will also be featured on forthcoming models of the automaker.
The sales of Mitsubishi's American division have rebounded 16 percent this year. So far, the maker of Mitsubishi pickup radiator hose has the Eclipse and Eclipse Spyder convertible as the second best-selling models in its lineup, behind the Lancer.
The fifth-gen Eclipse was launched as a 2006 model, and the next-gen version of the car, meanwhile is not unexpected until 2010 or later.

Adding turbocharger to a '98 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS.?
I'm planning on buying a '98 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS, because I do not have enough money to buy the GST version. So, I have a 2.4L engine, but no turbo. The hood has space for a turbo, and I wish to add one. I was thinking of getting a stock turbo from a GST, and just slapping it onto my engine, I obviously will give my car to a certified mechanic to do this, but wish to give him everything he needs, so I will only play for labor, and not parts. What all do I have to do to add a turbo, and a blow-off valve to my stock '98 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS? Are my dreams even possible?
You will spend more putting the turbo on the car than just getting the GST. The GST can be bought for around $4,000. Now you need the cost of the GS, the COMPLETE turbo setup meaning turbo, manifold, injectors, intercooler, engine management, oil feed lines, oil return lines, blow off valve, a new wastegate because the factory wastegate is set for 12-14 psi depending on year and the GS can only handle 8 psi daily driven, intecooler, intercooler piping, vacuum lines, blow off valve/diverter valve. These parts will be in the $2,000-$3,000 range, then the labor to install and get running $2,000. So basically you spent $5,000 PLUS the cost of the car to be at LESS hp than a STOCK GST, because of the lower boost pressure. You have basically 2 options for a turbo car, 1 buy the GST and be done with it or go to www.hahnracecraft.com and buy a specific kit for your car.
