question about a 1972 super beetle?

i bought a 1972 vw super beetle, the motor is out of it and the guy i bought it from said it ran when he took it out but it had a deep knock, he thinks that's its a main bearing or a rod bearing. I have got it torn down to the block and i was wandering how to split it apart and if any one knows any tricks to doing it, any input would be great thanks.
