In order to do a new car comparison, it is important to compare apples to apples. In other words, it would be foolhardy to compare SUVs to compact cars. Any new car comparison should take similar classes of cars and look at how they stack up against each other.

Let's take the coupe market first and compare the Volkswagen Golf, Dodge Caliber, Kia Soul Exclaim and Mazda 3S Sport. These cars are priced between $17,000 and $19,000. One difference is that the Golf has a 2.5 liter engine while the 3S Sport has only a 2 liter engine. The Exclaim Soul and Sport have significantly lower displacement than the Golf or Caliber. And, if safety is a consideration, the Kia does not have front side airbags but the other 3 do.

There are similarities and differences at the other end of the spectrum as well. Two very similar cars are the Rolls Royce Ghost and the Mercedes Benz S-Class. But, the prices of the two cars are not very similar. The Ghost starts at $245,000 while the S-Class starts at $133,000.

Let's now take a look at four vehicles in the SUV market: the Kia Sportage, Suzuki Sportback, Nissan Rogue, and Mitsubishi Outlander. These SUVs range from $19,000 to $22,000. Some of the difference can be seen in the horsepower in each vehicle. For instance, the Sportage has only a 140 horsepower while the Rogue has 170. Another difference is the highway miles to the gallon with the Sportage coming in last at 25 mpg while the Sportback leads the pack at 30.

When you do a new car comparison, make sure you are comparing apples to apples. A Mini Cooper is not in the same class as a minivan and shouldn't be treated as such.

Kia Posts 8.4% Increase in Global Sales in 2008

The global economic recession has affected each and every industry. Automobile industry has also been hit badly. Despite this negative trend, Hyundai’s affiliate Kia Motors has recorded an 8.4% year-on-year increase. Kia had the global sales of 1,375,738 passenger cars, recreation vehicles (RVs) and light trucks in 2008. Kia’s passenger car sales made up 63% of all the vehicles sold, marking an impressive 11.7% increase compared to 2007.

The C-segment Cerato, also known as Spectra in some markets, was Kia’s best-selling model in overseas markets in 2008 (As many as 192,149 units were sold). The B-Segment Rio comes next with 153,963 units while the Sportage SUV and the C-segment Cee’d received the third and fourth positions with 149,293 and 148,846 units sold, respectively. Kia’s well known city car Picanto stood fifth with 91,262 units sold.

China with 151,085 units sold and general markets with 262,166 units sold, have witnessed the largest year-on-year gains of 34.2%, and 30.5%, respectively in 2008. Korea witnessed the cumulative sales increases (A 16.2% gain from 316,432 units sold) while the Europe (A 2.3% decrease from 335,138 units sold) and the North America (An 8.6% decrease from 310,917 units sold) have witnessed the decrease in sales.
