For 2010, Kia's compact Spectra sedan has been replaced by an all-new model called Forte, powered by two new Hyundai-designed four-cylinder engines.
Both Forte engines are part of the Theta family, developed as a joint venture between Chrysler, Mitsubishi, and Hyundai, which owns a minority interest in Kia. Both are all-aluminum, 16-valve inline fours, with chain-driven dual overhead cams and variable intake valve timing. They replace the older iron-block Beta II engine used in the 2009 Spectra.
LX and EX Fortes have a 2.0-liter version of this engine, with 156 horsepower and 144 lb-ft of torque, up from the Spectra's 142 horsepower and 137 lb-ft. In states with California-style emissions standards, the new engine is rated at 154 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque. Optional on EX models is a Fuel Economy Package that includes electric power steering; a smart alternator that operates only when needed; and various drivetrain and tire changes for better gas mileage.
The Forte SX uses a 2.4-liter version of this engine, with a larger bore and longer stroke. It is rated at 173 horsepower and 168 lb-ft of torque, 165 horsepower and 161 lb-ft in states with California-type emissions.
On paper, both Forte engines produce more power than rivals like the Mazda3 and Toyota Corolla. In the real world, their thrust is blunted somewhat by tall transmission gearing, although performance remains adequate. Both engines are relatively loud when revved, but quiet at low and mid-range speeds. Some reviewers complain that the 2.4-liter engine has annoying, non-linear throttle response.
The 2.4-liter Forte's EPA estimated fuel economy is better than any of its direct rivals, but the 2.0-liter engine's 28-mpg combined rating is only mid-pack. The 2.0-liter scores better with the optional Fuel Economy Package, which raises the Forte's EPA combined rating to a class-leading 30 mpg.

An extended warranty will save you thousands of dollars if your Kia ever needs to be repaired. If you are an American resident, use the link above to get a FREE quote for an extended warranty for your Kia. Many people may wonder: I have not had any problems with my Kia vehicle so far. Do I really need an extended warranty? The answer is simple - Yes. Even though Kia makes quality automobiles, every vehicle on the road is open to the possibility of having a mechanical failure. The older the vehicle gets and the more miles that are put on it, the more likely it is that a breakdown occurs. Unfortunately, Kia's warranty is only there to protect you for a limited amount of time. Components such as computer-related items could fail regardless of your driving habits and with the complexity of vehicles today one major repair often costs more than an extended warranty itself. An extended warranty will be there for you when you need it the most once Kia is no longer there to protect you from high repair costs. Kia Spectra Parts nightmare ? Anyone?
OK so I have a 2004 Kia Spectra EX.
I've needed new brakes once before, and a new windshield.
EVERY TIME I have ever needed something, it has been a nightmare. After having a small crack on my windshield I decided I wanted the whole thing replaced. After they cut off the original they realized that it was a DIFFERENT version of a 2004 kia and that it was a half year (2004.5?)
With brakes it was the same thing.. He said after taking the brakes off my car, that he had the wrong pads and rotors.
And now... Today after taking my car to a well established mechanic, he just now calls to tell me that he has the wrong rear brake pads and rotors/drums.
Does any mechanic or Kia owner have/had this issue?
Either go to the dealer for service or make sure to emphasize that an independent shop use your Vehicle's Identification Number (VIN) (driver's side dash) to order parts from. Also record the date of manufacture of your vehicle and write those two things on the shop order you sign when you drop the car off. Every car has parts issues, not just your car. Remember, you have a 10 year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty. Not many cars have that to boast about!
