Golf vs. GTI vs. Passat vs. Jetta?

I am in the market for a car. New or used, doesn't make a difference to me as long as the car has a clean title and reasonable mileage. I'll probably end up in the $8k to $10k range. I like Volkswagen a lot, but I'm not sure which years/model are the best quality. Does anyone out there have any specific experiences with any I should look into or avoid? I like the Golf and the GTI a lot, but I'd also consider a newer Jetta or Passat...Any thoughts?

Please do yourself a huge favor and go the library and check out your choices in Consumer Reports. VW has huge quality problems in recent years and most of their cars are unreliable and very expensive to keep on the road. Click and Clack, the Public Radio car show guys have often referred to VWs as unreliable cars. They run a garage and work on them. The best small cars are Honda, Toyota, and to a lesser degree Nissan and Subaru.
