The high performance aftermarket world I must say has come a long way in producing some excellent parts that the average hot rodder has easy access to. A simple point and click from your home computer and you can have the latest in high performance parts delivered to your door in a matter of days. Most of these fine parts you are able to bolt on with little or no modifications.

But as I sit in my garage and look at the beautiful 523 cubic inch engine I recently built for my drag boat I think to myself what really has changed? It's pretty much the same as every other engine I've built in my life, block, crank, rods, pistons, heads, valvetrain, intake system, etc. The basic concept of the internal combustion engine remains the same. So my question to myself is what has changed?  Today's high performance and racing engines produce much more power than they did even ten years ago, so again, what has changed?  The answer I came up with is simple- air flow. Although the concept has never changed, the more air you can get into the cylinders the more power you will produce. What is the path the air needs to take to make it to the cylinders to be combusted? It travels and is distributed through the cylinder heads. Cylinder head air flow is, and in my opinion, will always be the major factor in producing more power in the internal combustion engine whether it be through larger camshafts, bigger valves, larger cubic inches, ( which seems to be the case nowadays) or bigger superchargers, it still comes down to airflow.

Like I stated in the beginning of this article the aftermarket manufacturers are producing parts that are stronger and more reliable but the cylinder heads they are producing is what makes the power. That's not to say you can't take a stock set of heads and make them better because that is a low cost option that will likely give you the greatest gains per dollar spent and can also be fun and rewarding when done yourself. Even some "as cast" aftermarket heads have room for improvement with some port matching, smoothing of the ports, proper shaping of the guide boss and blending of the bowel area you will see some power gains.

If you have never done any porting work before I suggest you find yourself a junk head to practice on first and get the feel of things and then move on to the heads you intend on using.

Remember bigger is not always better when it comes to cylinder heads.  It's all about proper shape and velocity.

It's also important to know your intended use, street, street rod, drag race, rpm range, etc. so you can choose the right cylinder heads or modifications needed for your application. Just having your heads ported or choosing the heads with the biggest ports doesn't mean you'll make more or the most power from your engine.  Answering these questions first will help you determine optimum port size and air flow requirements.  It's also a good idea to call the manufacturer and get their recommendations.

There's plenty to choose from out there, choosing the right parts is what's important. Good luck and have fun.

The all new Chevrolet Optra Magnum

The Optra Magnum features some new technologies such as dual mass flywheel, which helps in reducing vibration while idling, and a balanced shaft module, which guarantees refined and smooth engine operation.
Chevrolet Optra Spark The Optra Magnum comes with a warranty for two years or 40,000 kms and competes with the Skoda Octavia, Hyundai Elantra and Toyota Corolla.
The 2.0L variants of the Optra Magnum are powered by a standard 2.0-liter TCDi (Turbo Common Rail Direct Injection) diesel engine, which churns out a maximum power of 119 bhp at 3,000 rpm and 314 Nm of torque at 2,125 rpm. The engine features four cylinders, 16 valves and a Single Overhead Camshaft (SOHC). And the 1.6L variants are powered by a standard 1.6-liter VGIS (Variable Geometry Intake System) petrol engine, which churns out a maximum power of 203 bhp at 5800 rpm and 148 Nm of torque at 4000 rpm. The engine features four cylinders, 16 valves and a Double Overhead Camshaft (DOHC). Both the engines are linked to a standard 5-speed manual transmission. The Optra Magnum rides on McPherson Struts with anti-roll bars in the front as well as the rear. It is also equipped with twin-tube gas-filled shock absorbers. With this suspension system, the Optra Magnum can brave all sorts of road irregularities and offers a smooth ride.
Ventilated disc brakes in the front and disc brakes at the rear offer forceful stopping power, with short stopping distances, to the Optra Magnum. A power steering, which offers quick and prompt responses, gives direction to the Optra Magnum.
The Optra Magnum rides high on a wave of style. With smooth flowing lines and curved corners, it looks different from other sedans available in the market today. It measures more than 14 feet in length, while its wheelbase measures 8.5 feet.
Its front fascia is adorned by a distinct honeycomb grille that sports the Chevy bow-tie, body-coloured bumpers with integrated fog lamps, almond-shaped headlamps, which shine bright even when not turned on, and a long, broad hood.
At the sides, it features body-coloured waistline moulding with chrome and flared fenders, which give a boost to its aerodynamic design. It also comes with sleek doors and chrome-plated door handles, which give it an integrated appearance.
The designers of the Optra Magnum did not ignore its rear; it looks as impressive as its front. Bright and beautiful tail-lamps further add to its style quotient.
The Optra Magnum rolls on 6J x 15 wheels and 195/60 R15 tyres. However, the MAX comes with steel wheels, while the LS and LT wear alloy wheels

Is cold air intake a big risk for my 98 Chevy Camaro? (i.e. hydrolock)?

I'm driving a 98 Chevy Camaro (3.8L v6). I was looking at possibly installing a cold air intake but I don't want to hyrdolock my engine. The intake I am looking at(K&N filter and chrome tubes) is supposed to go from my intake port, down to the bottom of my car and the filter is supposedly put somewhere in or a round the fender well. I live in Florida where it rains quite a bit and I often encounter puddles that spray water around when you hit them.I know I could get a bypass valve but I don't know if they are absolutely necessary. Could some one please tell me the truth about the odds of sucking in enough water, with the filter in the noted location, to hydrolock my engine. Thank you for all your help!!

Any aftermarket equipment is a big risk on a daily driver car what you pick up in performance is just not worth it. How long would you not be able to go to work if your engine was damaged because of aftermarket equipment ? Go fast aftermarket stuff is fun on our weekend toys original equipment on the daily driver .
