The term muscle car was first used in 1964 with the release of mid-sized Pontiac's with one important new feature - a 389 cubic inch V8. This classic Muscle Car was capable of 0-60 mph in less than 7 seconds which was a truly incredible feat for a car straight out of the show room 50 years ago.

The Muscle Car industry was spawned out of the gradual increase in popularity of stock car racing (NASCAR) and drag racing.

The first car to be inspired by the need to create ever more powerful machines was actually in 1948 with the Oldsmobile Rocket 88. This car featured the first high compression overhead valve engine combined with a much lighter body and chassis design. By 1955 every car manufacturer was offering their own version of the V8 with some remaining legendary to this day.

Two of the engines that haven't changed much since there original conception is the Chrysler Hemi, first manufactured in 1951 and the other is the small block Chevy which started manufacture in 1955.

Over the forth-coming years the car manufacturers entered into a battle not only over the engine performance but on the size of the cars. In the fifties the cars were huge with the size becoming a status symbol. This increase in size lead to ever more powerful engines being employed to ensure that the acceleration did not diminish. As with today's market there are still individuals that want to go faster which lead to a thriving after-market performance parts industry.

In 1962 Dodge and Plymouth began to drop their heavier cars whilst Ford and Chevy started to offer an intermediate car such as the Fairline. The decrease in weight coupled with the lively engines led to Dodge and Pontiac performing very well on the NASCAR racing circuit.

When these cars were given over to the tuning enthusiasts the performance increase was phenomenal with Hot Rod recording a quarter mile of just 12.69 seconds and a stock setting 8 NASCAR records. These figures were fantastic marketing material and often quoted be sales people everywhere.

Pontiac's timing of the introduction of the GTO was perfect. They completely misjudged how popular the car would be estimating sales at approximately 5,000 in the first year but actually selling 32,000. The main feature that distinguished this car from other Pontiac's was that Engineers added the higher performance engine as an option. This allowed the designers to overcome the self imposed limitation of mid-sized cars not having engines bigger that 330 cubic inches.

It wouldn't be long before other car manufacturers were hot on Pontiac's heels with the introduction of the Chevelle by Chevrolet and Skylark from Buick.

As competition mounted it was all out war between the competing companies. Each company understood the importance of motor sports in the marketing of these vehicles. Ford in particular sparing to expense in producing some serious competition in rallies, international endurance racing and NASCAR races all over the country. One weapon in Ford arsenal was the introduction of the Ford Thunderbolt which was built for speed having a lightweight body and massive engine it wasn't for the faint-hearted.

In 1964 Ford also introduced the Ford Mustang which came with a long line of options but not originally marketed as a Muscle car. The car was extremely popular and sold over 681, 000 in the first year of sales. The battle of the car manufacturers continued into the 1970's with the more an more powerful cars being introduced.

As the popularity of Muscle Cars increased there became greater concern over the safety of these cars on the public highway. The concern was particularly targeted at the young buyers and the effectiveness of handling, brakes and tire adhesion. This lead to the insurance companies raising the surcharges associated with these cars putting many cars out of reach to the target market. In 1973 there were also efforts to increase the cleanliness of the air which lead to lower octane fuels being introduced.

05 Ford Mustang

The 2005 Ford Mustang certainly has been improved from previous models, and that says a lot. Consider that nearly every aspect of performance, styling, and power have been improved in some manner. The V8 equipped GT models are more powerful and handle better than previous sold axle suspension models were able to and the cool retro styling inside and out certainly are benefits as well. Safety is still a little behind modern times, lacking stability control and side curtain airbags. Overall however, those who want to enter the performance car market and are on a budget will be more than happy with one of the infamous pony cars.

For 2005 the Ford Mustang is the only pony car offered. Both the Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Thunderbird were either out of production or cancelled entirely. It is important to remember that the mustang is the original pony car as well, and proved itself more than capable of outlasting all the competition. As stated before it is the issue of handling that keeps the Mustang more similar to the 60's models than that of a modern performance car. The solid axle suspension offers for one of the roughest rides a modern car owner could experience, but the power certainly makes up for this problem. Pricing is also a great aspect for these cars, ranging from more than affordable to outright expensive.

Trim packages include the V6 equipped models in Deluxe and Premium. GT models come in Deluxe and Premium packages as well. The basic V6 Deluxe comes with 16 inch alloy wheels, AC, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry, cruise control, CD players, and other optional upgrades. V6 Premium models have a Shaker premium audio system, enhanced wheels, power seats, optional convertible body styles, and leather seating.

GT Deluxe models come with the basic V6 models equipment along with antilock brakes, fog lamps, 17 inch wheels, and full power accessories. The ultimate model is the GT Premium that is sure to impress. It comes with the upgraded stereo system and full leather upholstery, steering wheels, and shifters. The interior design has been significantly altered on GT premium models, offering the most luxury ever for a Mustang car.

Engines offered for the 2005 Ford Mustang include the 4.0 liter V6 that put out 210 horsepower and 240 pound feet of torque. GT models come 4.6 liter V8 that has 300 horsepower and 320 pound feet of torque. There are three valves to supply each cylinder on V8 models. Rear wheel drive is the standard for all Mustangs and they are equipped with a 5 speed manual or 5 speed automatic transmission for a little more money.

It is really hard to compare the Mustang to any other vehicle simply because all of it's competitors in the class have been retired, and it is unfair to put it up against high end performance cars. Interior quality has been greatly improved from previous years, and Ford has simplified the control clusters and made it a more ergonomic vehicle. Body styling is more similar to that of the original models than most recent predecessors. Consumers will do well to consider one of these great cars as way to break into the performance car market. The only negative thing to consider is the simplistic axle system.

Vacuum question?

Does anyone know the correct Vacuum range *in inches* that a 3.1mpfi from a 90 pontiac 6000LE would be? I changed all my vacuum lines which brought my vacuum from 11inches to 14-15 inches.. I still had my sputtering problem and lack of power so I kept poking around and noticed my pcv valve hose has a split in it.. I am replacing it tomorrow but was wondering if anyone knows what my vacuum "should" be at idle
Thanks in advance

you would be in the correct or adequate range now, the split in the pcv line could cause your sputtering, be sure to check for proper pcv valve function- replace if needed, if it is very dirty- clean or replace it, faulty pcv valves can cause oil to go where it does not belong, this could cause spark plug fouling-also a cause of sputtering by a miss in the ignition system.
