Bicycle hill climb journeys are a joy to the keen athletes that cycle everywhere. For everyone else, they can seem a bit of a chore. Here's some basic tips and techniques to help you gain momentum and climb hills easier:
1) As you are approach the hill, change to your higher gears and try and increase your speed as much as you can. You want to create as much momentum as you can before the angle increases too much.
2) As you near the foot of the hill, change down into a lower gear, but keep pedaling to maintain the same speed (don't do this too early or you'll tire easily, or too late because it'll be harder to pedal!). You'll experience far less resistance in the lower gear, but it'll tire you out quickly. Alternatively, if you have an electric bike, simply engage the motor here by pushing your power button or twisting your throttle.
3) As you climb the hill, maintain your high speed of pedaling to keep up your speed. If you find your speed is slowing too much, don't be afraid to stop and walk. Its safer. Electric bike users - if your speed begins to drop much beneath the top speed, you could start pedaling again to supplement the motor.
4) As you near the top of the hill, you won't need to pedal so fast. Slowly change up to a higher gear again to pick up some speed, unless you're...
Cycling Down A Hill
1) Again, stay in a low gear. You'll have far more control at the bottom of the hill. As the hill flattens out and your speed slowly begins to drop, you're pedaling will become effective again. It's much better (and safer) in this situation to be in a lower gear.
2) Use your brakes sparingly. It isn't sensible to try and brake hard when you're travelling fast downhill. If you do a lot of cycling on hills or fast cycling, it's best to have disk brakes (more similar to cars) since they're much more effective than other bike brakes which simply grip the wheel.
3) Don't brake with the front wheel at speed! It's a one-way ticket to the dentist!
A bicycle hill climb disc brake: Essential if you're doing a lot of hilly or fast cycling
Disc brakes tend to be quite common on mountain bikes where they're needed to rapidly slow a bike descending down a hillside.
Still Can't Cycle Up and Down a Hill?
There may still be a variety of problems trying to cycle, like your home is on a hill and you can't get the momentum to get going, or you lack the strength or endurance - then why not consider an electric bike?
You can power up a hill at the push of a button, or twist of the throttle. It's affordable, its fast and it still has all the benefits of cycling.

Keep Your Saab Brakes in Good Condition
Keeping your Saab's brakes in good working order is a vital part of keeping your car healthy and running right. Brake systems for import cars like the Saab are build with minimal thickness in order to save weight, but this unfortunately means that the brake rotors much be replaced rather than simply turned. The second most common cause for failure is overheating or warping from heat, as brake rotors in import cars like the Saab are much more sensitive to overheating.
Here is some information that you absolutely need to know to save money on your Saab brake repairs -
- Visually inspect the condition of your Saab's breaks at least once in a six month period. Keep an eye out for all of the following things.
The Brake Rotors or Discs, pads and drums should be regularly inspected for defects or discoloration. Discoloration may indicate damage from heat, or warping, and defects like cracking, breakage, uneven wear or grooves mean you need to replace the part immediately. Replace your brake drums, rotors and pads immediately if any defects are found. If your Saab has sensors that warn that the pads are worn, replace them as well. The Brake shoes should be evenly worn, and there should be no protruding rivets.
When you are inspecting the brakes, you need to check the wheel cylinders, the hoses, the calipers and the fittings for any chance of leaking hydraulic fluid. You should also check the master cylinder, the reservoir and the proportioning valve assemblies, replacing or rebuilding any faulty equipment as it is needed. If your brake pedal has gotten lower under your foot, you need to look into it, because there are a number of causes for this.
There are a number of sounds that you need to listen for, including squeaking, rhythmic noises, constant braking noises, and so on. As soon as you notice a problem of any type, you should take it in to be repaired immediately. If you delay the repair of your brakes, you may find it to be extremely dangerous.
Even if you do manage to avoid physical harm, if you delay when it comes to repairing brake problems, you can still significantly increase the costs associated with doing so. Here are a couple of things to keep in mind:
- Keep your brakes clean by washing them when you wash your car. This will keep dirt and dust off the pads, and also keeps the brakes easier to work on.
- Aim to keep the hydraulic reservoir at its proper level, using the fluid type that Saab recommends. You should never substitute the fluid or mix types.
- When it comes to brake problems, there are no quick fixes or shortcuts. They either function as they are meant to, or they do not. It is important that you know and understand your brake system so that you will know what to do when something goes wrong.
- Keep track of your repair information in a log and keep track of services, receipts and warranties.
- Most noises are related to your Saab's pads, but sensors and rotors should also be replaced when your pads are replaced.

Tim Woodward: Boisean a pioneer in 'UnderWater golfing'
How windy has it been in Boise this year? No one knows better than Boisean Mick Schraufnagel, who called The Statesman to say he'd had a "Tim Woodward experience." The wind had blown his golf cart up a hill, down the other side and into a pond, where it sank with, among other things, his clubs, keys, prescription glasses and a GPS.
