Loud intermittent grinding sounds in my 2004 Envoy at highway speeds. Any ideas?

This sound will appear suddenly above 50 mph and last for about 20-30 sec and then fade away. It sounds like it's coming from behind the dashboard from the driver's side to the middle console. It sounds like a fan motor whose bearings are wearing out or a speedometer cable that's about ready to break, but I don't think the Envoy has a speedometer cable. It is speed sensitive and will go away below 35 mph. I have tried turning off the heat/AC, changing from 2WD to 4WD- no help. If you coast in N at 55 mph and gently rev the engine past 3500 rpm, the sound diminishes somewhat and then goes away when you return to D (not always). Any thoughts? Thanks!

sound like a busted trans., flywheel, fan, axels, frame take it to the nearest auto repair shop immidiatly it can crahs and possibly kill you
