You may well have been told that you have "MacPherson Struts" on your vehicle and wondered at the dealership or big box store automotive service department tech writer what on earth are these car parts and how do they differ from good old fashioned ( and inexpensive ) auto shock absorbers.
It is relatively easy to spot if you do have MacPherson Struts. A suspension system with Macs can be easily identified by even automotive repair novices by looking for a very heavy and thick tube shape strut attached to the wheel assembly at the base and slanting upwards away from the wheel. A coil spring is visible from the outside of the strut at the top, and an A-shaped arm running horizontally from the base of the strut so its' too legs attach to the frame.
When the MacPherson strut has the spring around the strut assembly, the shock absorber spindle and spring is sometimes a combined unit held in place at the top by the upper mount assembly and at the bottom by the ball joint and lower control arm. The shock absorber is actually built into the MacPherson struts' outer housing. The coil spring itself is held in place by a lower seat welded to the strut casing and an upper seat bolted to the shock-absorber piston rod. In turn the upper mount bolts to your car, truck, and bus or S.U.V. body.
Any looseness in the control-arm bushings, ball joint, or strut-rod bushings or stabilizer bar links would mean replacement. The strut assembly itself should be checked closely for spring fatigue, poor damping characteristics, binding and popping that may well occur when the wheels are turned or rolled - should be checked between for leaks between the shock shaft and shaft housing. By bouncing the suspension, check for binding which indicates a possible bent shock absorber shaft. If any of these conditions exist the strut will have to be taken apart for service and this is a job for which any back yard mechanic should really seek auto mechanic professional help and assistance

Enjoy Performance at Its Best With Gm Suspension Bushings and Clutch Kit
GM quality car parts are the ones that make up every GM vehicle. With such important functions to perform, it is a must to keep them properly maintained.
GM suspension bushings are basically used to connect the various moving arms and pivot points to the chassis and other parts of the suspension. These can be found in many locations on the suspension system. These bushings often take the form of an annular cylinder of flexible material inside a metallic casing or outer tube. They might also feature an internal crush tube which protects the bushing from being crushed by the fixings which hold it on to a threaded spigot.
GM suspension bushings can be made from different materials such as natural rubber and urethane compound. Natural rubber is specially with high tensile strength and excellent stability at low temperatures. Natural rubber suspension bushings require no lubrication, isolates minor vibration, reduces transmitted road shock and operates noise free. Polyurethane or Urethane suspension bushings, however, increase the performance handling characteristics of the vehicle since urethane is a firmer material then rubber. Polyurethane can be as soft as a rubber band or as hard as plastic. GM suspension bushings should be replaced if they are cracked, elongated, oil saturated, or worn. Looseness, cracks and off set bolts are the most common signs of bushings in need of replacement.
Equally important as keeping a vehicle's suspension at its best is giving the best maintenance for the the vehicle's manual transmission. And the best GM part to do just that is the GM clutch kit. The GM clutch is a subcomponent of the manual transmission system. Its function is to engage and disengage the engine to the gearbox and transfer torque to the vehicle's transmission in split-seconds.
A GM clutch kit is composed of a clutch disc or a clutch friction disc and clutch pressure plate. Some clutch kits however already have pilot bushings or pilot bearings included. The pressure plate is consist of a clutch plate, springs, cover and release fingers. There are two types of pressure plates namely the diaphragm-type and the spring-type. The clutch disc is a metal disc that directs the flow of power between the engine and the transmission along with the pressure plate and the flywheel. Regular clutch discs are lined with asbestos which is the same material that is used in brake shoes and pads to achieve friction. A clutch with better materials used for friction and stronger springs to go with it can give faster and harder launches, quicker shifts, and much better durability. A GM clutch kit basically has the components needed to restore clutch performance. With a complete GM clutch kit, all damaged components can be replaced all at once so that they can function and fit well together.

will a1977 403 olds engine accept a manual transmission pilot bushing?
i am currently starting a olds to chevy truck engine swap i need to know if a 1977 olds 403 will accept a pilot bushing fron a 1980 chevy truck with a 4spd manual tranny i already have the bell housing spacer but don't know if the pilot bushing will fit
Only way to tell is to look in the back of the crankshaft in the engine and see if there's a hole that would accomodate a pilot bushing--I would think there should be as they usually don't cast different cranks for manual or auto. Next you'll have to get a bushing that fits the crank and also fits the input shaft of the trans...hopefully, should not be too hard to find as Olds used Muncie trans' in some of there applications.....Paul
