A car is one of the most valuable investments that a person will make in their lifetimes. Taking a little time to perform some routine maintenance on a car can translate to big savings in the future by preventing major and costly problems from developing. There are a number of things that you can do to help your car at home without having to go to a mechanic.
One of the easiest things to do is to make sure all of the fluid levels are adequate. In an automobile, there are five major fluid levels to watch. These are all located under the bonnet of the car. Depending on the make and model, they may be in different locations around the engine so it is advisable to consult with the owners manual to pinpoint the exact spot. The first fluid to check is the oil. Oil is responsible for lubricating the engine. In order to check the oil, pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean with a rag. Take note of the minimum and maximum marks on the stick. Reinsert the dipstick into the oil well and then pull it out again. Check to see that the oil line is between the minimum and maximum marks on the stick. If it is below the minimum level, add oil slowly, being sure not to overfill. The next fluid to check is the coolant. This is the mixture of water and antifreeze that goes into the radiator, which cools the engine. Make sure that the coolant is between the maximum and minimum levels. Similarly, you should check the levels of brake fluid and transmission fluid. Some models of cars may contain closed transmission systems that do not allow for a person to easily check the transmission fluid levels. If that is the case, you do not need to concern yourself with this level.
Another easy thing to do at home is to check your tyre pressure. Low tyre pressure can cause poor handling and control and lower fuel efficiency. First, consult the owners guide for the correct tyre pressure for your car. Next, unscrew the cap on the tyre and use an air pressure gauge to measure the pressure inside the tyre. If the tyre is low on pressure, add more with an air pump. If the pressure is too high, release a little air through the cap.
Cars often need new windscreen wipers. If you notice that your windows are not being cleared very well during the rain, it may be time to change the wipers. The first step in changing the wiper blades is to check the owners workshop manual for the size of the blade that the car needs. Next, you need to lift the blades off the windscreen and then slide the old blades off. Many blades have tabs that hold them into place, so you may need to press one to release the blade. Next, slide the new blade on and be sure that it is locked into place.
Front and rear lights can also be changed at home without having to go to a mechanic. If a light were to ever blow out, changing it is just a matter of opening the bonnet or the boot lid, opening a small panel, and then exchanging bulbs.
Finally, it is important to take your car in for regular services. Nothing is more important in extending the life of a car than getting routine oil changes. Also, occasionally belts will need to be replaced. All of these services must be performed by professional mechanics.
By following some of these simple tips, you can ensure that your car will last for several years, running in tip top shape.

How to Do an Oil Change on Your Car in Three Easy Steps Save Money
You will need the following to do an oil change.
Oil filter
Motor oil
Oil filter clamp
Ratchet set or ring spanner
Rags
Oil pan
Overalls
Jack
Some bricks
Funnel
Below are the three easy steps you need to follow to replace the engine oil in your car (oil change)..
(1) Before you start make sure you are wearing overalls, or old clothing. Make sure your hand brake is on and your car is in park, (Auto) or in gear (manual transmission). Jack your car up to the required hight so you can fit underneath it. Place some bricks under the car on each side to support the car at the same height as the jack.
(2) Find the correct sized socket for your ratchet, or ring spanner size, by checking it on the plug on the button of the sump. Place the oil pan under your car directly underneath the sump plug. Undo the sump plug and. Drain the oil until it stops running; this should take about 5 – 10 minutes maybe more for a larger car. While the engine oil is draining, undo the oil filter that is attached to the side of the motor with an oil filter clamp. Also undo your oil cap that’s on top of your motor. It is best to drain the oil from the motor while the engine oil is warm, but if it is hot you will need to be very careful not to burn yourself on the hot oil of motor.
(3) Make sure the oil filter rubber “O” ring and the engines mating surface are perfectly clean. Place a small amount of motor oil on the “O” ring of the oil filter. Clean the drain plug and the drain plug hole surrounds of the engine. Replace and tighten the oil filter. Take the oil pan out from under your car. Put the sump plug back onto the sump do not over tighten the plug. Fill your oil up using the funnel until its full then run the car check your dip stick to see if your oil is still low then fill it up again if needed check your dip stick again. Check to see if there is any oil leaking form the side of the engine block. Replace the oil cap on top the engine. Make shore there are no tools under your car. Remove bricks from both sides of your car. Lower the jack down slowly and your done. Well done!
By doing an oil change your car will preform better and there will be less wear on your engine in the long run.
By doing an oil change your self you will save between $30 – $70 dollars. And you can now spend that money on something else.

I worry about sabotage, someone adding sand in the oil cap on my motorcycle engine, how can I lock it?
My motorcycle has a gas cap lock, but no oil cap lock.
I am worried that someone can remove the oil cap and fill it up with sand or dirt without me knowing and cause serious harm to my engine.
I thought about doing this to someones Harley, that gave me that idea and made me worry about someone doing that to my bike.
How can i install a lock on the engine oil cap or my engine?
They do make them, found a website below (UK) that sells them so it wouldn't be hard to imagine that they have them in the US. I have never met a person who would take it out on someones ride (car, bike, whatever) without confronting the person first. If you have an issue with a person confront them and not their ride, that is a pretty low thing to do.
