All the car blogs lately have been speculating on the direction that the Ford Motor Company is going to take in the wake of declining sales and stiff competition. We know that Ford has too much capacity and we know that the company will be closing some key plants and laying off an as yet to be determined number of employees. What hadn't been clear is which models would be cut from the line up. Now, it appears that Ford will exit the lucrative minivan market. That's right, Ford apparently will stick with building cars, trucks, and SUVs, and leave the minivan market to the other players.
Ever since the Chrysler Corporation invented the minivan market back in the early 1980s with its line of "K-car" derived minivans - the Dodge Caravan, Plymouth Voyager, and the Chrysler Town & Country - Ford has been playing catch up. Indeed, a series of forgettable "star" named minivans were served up by Ford and summarily rejected by consumers: the Aerostar, Windstar, and the Freestar. Later, both Honda and Toyota brought out their own entries and Ford, along with Chevrolet found themselves trailing badly in an overcrowded segment. Indeed, several GM divisions sell minivans, as does Kia and Nissan, making the market especially tight.
Should Ford decide to go ahead with plans to ditch the minivan market, it wouldn't be a complete retreat. For one, many consumers prefer the automaker's popular Ford Explorer SUV while its all wheel drive Freestyle wagon/crossover competes well too. Finally, another vehicle - the Edge - will soon make its debut and likely pull many minivan customers over. The Edge will be yet another crossover vehicle - somewhat of a SUV/wagon hybrid - and fill the need for consumers.
Yes, Ford appears ready to ditch the minivan market. No loss to consumers and probably a smart move for the beleaguered automaker.

2009 Chrysler Minivans: Cutting Edge Technology Means Better Fuel Economy
It was 25 years ago this Fall when the Chrysler Corporation shook up the automotive industry by introducing a trio of small vans, dubbed minivans, for its Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth brands. The Chrysler Town & Country, Plymouth Voyager, and Dodge Caravan were instant hits, helping Chrysler to carve out a new automotive segment and defining the term “people hauler” in the process.
Today, Chrysler still leads in this important segment, offering two models: the Dodge Grand Caravan and the Chrysler Town & Country. Both minivans seat seven passengers and are powered by a 4.0L V6 engine that is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The transmission, new for 2009, is the first of its kind: the only six-speed automatic available on a minivan.
The new engine-transmission pairing has given the automaker a needed boost, by providing best in class fuel economy of 17 mpg city and 25 mpg highway. "Chrysler and Dodge minivans continue to lead the segment," said Larry Lyons, Vice President - Car and Minivan Product Team, Chrysler LLC. "With an improved 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine and a minivan-first six-speed transmission, no other minivan has better fuel economy. We optimized both the engine and the transmission to give our customers the fuel economy they want, and the power and responsiveness they expect."
Chrysler has managed to hold firm in the minivan market even while Ford and General Motors exited the segment. The Honda Odyssey and Toyota Sienna are its chief competitors, but Chrysler still holds 40% of the market, with the Dodge Grand Caravan continuing as the best selling minivan on the market. Since it was first introduced, Chrysler has sold more than twelve million of its minivans.
When it comes to passenger safety, the Chrysler and Dodge minivans are at the top of their game, receiving five-star crash test certification for front and side impacts. Both minivans have been technological leaders down through the years, by offering Swivel 'n Go seating, minivan-first dual DVD players and uconnect studios SIRIUS Backseat TV with family programming channels that include Nickelodeon, Disney Channel and Cartoon Network Mobile, and best-in-class aerodynamics, Cd of 0.33.
For 2009, a third version of the Chrysler minivans is now available, the Volkswagen Routan, a vehicle which shares the same platform, engine and transmission as its Chrysler and Dodge cousins. However, the Routan uses a unique suspension and the minivan has its own interior and exterior to help differentiate the model from its American competitors.

Compatiblity Question on a Transmissions for Dodges?
I have been told that as long as the transmission is coming from a Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge of the same model year with the same engine type and speed (in this specific case 3.0 and 3 speed). So like a 1996 Chrysler Lebarron that is a 3.0L 3-Speed's transmission will work in a Dodge Caravan that is a 3.0L 3-Speed. It makes sense, and I trust the person who told me this. I guess I just want to be sure I don't have to shell out the cash twice if this isn't the case!!
Chrystler, Plymouth and Dodge all have the same manufacturer for engines and transmissions(ha ha Im thinking its mitsubishi actually lol) so as long as its the same size engine, and semi close to the same year it will fit perfectly. The 3.0 is a very popular engine and they have not done anything to it in the past decade at least so the transmission of any vehicle with the 3.0 would fit it. It is just a matter of making sure that the transmission transaxles will line up with the tires and axles. I would be most comfortable putting a van transmission into a van and a car tranny into a car myself since the frames are manufactured by the same people as well and so it is a guarantee that they will align correctly.
Family pleads for hit-and-run driver to come forward
Authorities say they may have found a vehicle that was involved in a hit-and-run accident that killed a 1-year-old Taylorsville girl three days ago. Her family sits by a memorial waiting for answers and pleading with the hit-and-run driver to come forward.
